[generalNote]: Hanes gweinyddol / Braslun bywgraffyddol | Administrative history | Biographical sketch Nodyn | Note Penybont Hall, Llanbadarn Fawr, Radnorshire, was built by John Price (1723-1798), banker. He built up a sizeable estate, including the manor of Golon, Abbey Cwm-Hir, purchased in 1790, and other properties in Radnorshire and in Ludlow, Shropshire. He was survived by one daughter, Mary Ann (1793-1876). In 1811, she married John Cheesement Severn (1781-1875), a London-born barrister and onetime MP; he had already bought land in Llanbedr Painscastle and Michaelchurch in Radnorshire in 1808, and would later add other properties in Herefordshire and Radnorshire. They had three daughters and one son, John Percy Severn (1814-1900), who inherited the estate on his father's death in 1875. He was succeeded by his younger sister Emily (1815-1906). The estate then passed to Major-General R. C. Whitehead (1833-1910), son of John Cheesement Severn's half-sister. MORGAN WATKIN County Health Department, Aberystwyth Received6.x.64 1.INTRODUCTION HEREFORDSHIREis repeatedly referred to in Domesday as lying in Wales and the county is regularly described as such in the Pipe Rolls until 1249-50. Of the two dozen or so charters granted to the county town, a number are addressed to the citizens of Hereford in Wales. That fluency in Welsh was until 1855oneof the qualifications for the post of clerk to the Hereford city magistrates indicated the county's bilingual nature. The object of the present investigation is to ascertain whether there is any significant genetic difference between the part of Herefordshire conquered by the Anglo-Saxons and the area called "Welsh Hereford- shire ".Assome moorland parishes have lost 50 per cent. of their inhabitants during the last 50 years, the need to carry out the survey is the more pressing. 2.THE HUMAN HISTORY OF HEREFORDSHIRE Pre-Norman Conquest Offa'sgeneral line of demarcation between England and Wales in the eighth century extending in Herefordshire from near Lyonshall to Bridge Sollars, about five miles upstream from Hereford, is inter- mittent in the well-wooded lowlands, being only found in the Saxon clearings. From this Fox (i) infers that the intervening forest with its dense thickets of thorn and bramble filling the space under the tree canopy was an impassable barrier. The general terms and conditions for upper Wye paddling described earlier always apply. Builth Wells Access Point (map on p3) Directions: Follow the Builth one-way system through the high street and round until you come to the Groe public car park on your left (entrance next to the Tourist Information Centre). Unloading: The car park is a short distance to the egress point on the right bank above the bridge. Bachawy Brook Access/Exit Point (map on p3) Directions, Unloading & Parking: From Builth Wells take the A470 south towards Brecon. After approximately 6 miles, turn left crossing the Wye over the Erwood Bridge (signposted to Aberedw and Painscastle). The road passes underneath another bridge before curving to the left. Take the next left (signposted to Boughrood & Llanstephan). After 1.3 miles the road crosses the Bachawy Brook via an old railway bridge. Immediately before this bridge there is a lay-by on your left. Park here and unload. Accessing the water: Using the path from the lay-by, walk down to the Bachawy Brook, crossing it via the small footbridge. Please note that this is a permissive path, not a right of way. On no account paddle down the Bachawy – there is a large watergate blocking your passage.
