    Dresdner Philharmonie The Dresden Philharmonic can look back on 150 years of history as the orchestra of Saxony’s capital Dresden. When the so-called “Gewerbehaussaal” opened on 29 November 1870, the citizens of the city were given the opportunity to organise major orchestra concerts. Philharmonic concerts were held regularly starting in 1885; the orchestra adopted its present name in 1923. In its first decades, composers such as Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Dvořák and Strauss conducted the Dresdner Philharmonie with their own works. The first desks were presided over by outstanding concertmasters such as Stefan Frenkel, Simon Goldberg and the cellists Stefan Auber and Enrico Mainardi. From 1934, Carl Schuricht and Paul van Kempen led the orchestra; van Kempen in particular guided the Dresden Philharmonic to top achievements. All of Bruckner’s symphonies were first performed in their original versions, which earned the orchestra the reputation of a “Bruckner orchestra” and brought renowned guest conductors such as Hermann Abendroth, Eduard van Beinum, Fritz Busch, Eugen Jochum, Joseph Keilbert, Erich Kleiber, Hans Knappertsbusch and Franz Konwitschny to the rostrum. After 1945 and into the 1990s, Heinz Bongartz, Horst Förster, Kurt Masur (from 1994 also honorary conductor), Günther Herbig, Herbert Kegel, Jörg-Peter Weigle and Michel Plasson were the principal conductors. In recent years, conductors such as Marek Janowski, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos and Michael Sanderling have shaped the orchestra. As of season 2019/2020, Marek Janowski has returned to the Dresden Philharmonic as principal conductor and artistic director. Its home is the highly modern concert hall inaugurated in April 2017 in the Kulturpalast building in the heart of the historic old town.

His father, Carl Conrad Schuricht was born on 27 January 1856. He was an organ-builder and worked at his father's factory. He died on 9 June 1880 (3 weeks before his son was born !) when he tried to help an employee fallen into the sea, in the bay of Danzig. His mother, Amanda Ludowika Alwine Wusinowska was a well-known Polish Oratorio singer (1847-1935) . She didn't re-marry after her husband's death. 1886 : Began piano and violin lessons at the age of 6. Studied at the « Friedrichs Realgymnasium » in Berlin. 1891 : Began to compose at the age of 11. 1892 : Studied at the « Königliches Realgymnasium » in Wiesbaden. Written the music and the librettos for 2 Operas. 1895 : Started conducting at the age of 15. 1901-1902 : 1st professional job as « Korrepetitor » at the « Stadttheater » of Mainz. 1902 : Won a composition prize from the Kuszynski Foundation, and awarded a scholarship by Franz von Mendelssohn. Allowed him to continue his studies at the « Berliner Musikhochschule » (« der Königlichten Hochschule für Musik ») under Ernst Rudorff, piano ; Heinrich van Eyken (and not Engelbert Humperdink) , composition ; and, later, Max Reger in Leipzig. His musical compositions were published mostly by Drei-Lilien-Verlag, Berlin. Opus 1 : Piano Sonata in F minor. Opus 2 : « Herbst-Stücke » (Opuscules for autumn) for piano and orchestra.     DECCA DISCOGRAPHY >>V VIENNA, Austria, Germany, Hungary, etc. The Vienna Philharmonic was the jewel in Decca’s crown, particularly from 1956 when the engineers adopted the Sofiensaal as their favoured studio. The contract with the orchestra was secured partly by cultivating various chamber ensembles drawn from its membership. Vienna was favoured for symphonic cycles, particularly in the mid-1960s, and for German opera and operetta, including Strausses of all varieties and Solti’s “Ring” (1958-65), as well as Mackerras’s Janá ček (1976-82). Karajan recorded intermittently for Decca with the VPO from 1959-78. But apart from the New Year concerts, resumed in 2008, recording with the VPO ceased in 1998. Outside the capital there were various sessions in Salzburg from 1984-99. Germany was largely left to Decca’s partner Telefunken, though it was so overshadowed by Deutsche Grammophon and EMI Electrola that few of its products were marketed in the UK, with even those soon relegated to a cheap label. It later signed Harnoncourt and eventually became part of the competition, joining Warner Classics in 1990. Decca did venture to Bayreuth in 1951, ’53 and ’55 but wrecking tactics by Walter Legge blocked the release of several recordings for half a century. The Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra’s sessions moved from Geneva to its home town in 1963 and continued there until 1985. The exiled Philharmonia Hungarica recorded in West Germany from 1969-75. There were a few engagements with the Bavarian Radio in Munich from 1977- 82, but the first substantial contract with a German symphony orchestra did not come until 1982.

He presented the first radio broadcast cycle of Mahler’s music in 1962, interviewing musicians and others who had known Mahler. This led him to Mahler’s daughter, Anna, with whom he shared a lasting friendship. He also helped to convince Mahler’s widow,Alma, to lift her ban on comple- tions of her husband’s Tenth Symphony. Jerry Bruck was directly responsible for the release of the suppressed first movement of Mahler’s early cantata Das klagende Lied and of the composer’s Piano Quartettsatz. He assisted with the American premieres of those works, and also of the Tenth Symphony in both the Cooke and Wheeler versions. He produced and engineered the first com- mercial recording of Mahler’s initially five-movement Symphony No. (with Blumine) for CBS/Odyssey, and later co-engineered the award-winning recording of the same work with James Judd and the Florida Philharmonic for Harmonia Mundi. Jerry Bruck has written program notes and lectured on the music of Mahler, recorded most of Mahler’s vocal and orchestral music including a first recording of Joe Wheeler’s performing version of Mahler’s Tenth Symphony, and assisted in the production of a recent video docu- mentary on Mahler’s Third Symphony.

    Bruckner’s Eighth Symphony – A Survey of Recordings by Lee Denham When the editorial team of MusicWeb International first encouraged its reviewers to support the readership during the COVID-19 lockdown with more reading material, I initially offered an old CD review I wrote of Mahler’s Sixth Symphony a number of years ago for a private blog, now NLA. Upon further reflection, however, I did wonder about the wisdom of writing about a work that ends in total despair and desolation for a readership who themselves may have already felt somewhat desolated and in despair during a lockdown! So instead, I thought it would be a good idea to use an even older survey of Bruckner’s Eighth Symphony instead – at least that ends triumphantly and should cheer you all up! I now know that it was not a good idea. You see, fair reader, the problem with these things is that as soon as the ink dries, a new recording appears of the work that demands inclusion and assessment – and so it proved with my Bruckner 8 review. Originally it was in two sections, the second, main part being a running commentary of the work, interspersed with views on the recordings that I have to hand, a style UK readers may recognise as being adopted by BBC Radio 3’s CD Review programme. The first part was merely a brief run through of the recordings I had dismissed before the review, with the reasons why. Now the problem with this, is that it is virtually impossible to adapt the bulk of the review whenever a new recording appears without resorting to a wholesale rewrite every time, which is of course impractical.
