Therefore, we can hardly wait to kick off the event week with many activities that of course end up with the epic IRONMAN Copenhagen.

CITY OF CYCLISTS - Copenhagen bicycle life MONUMENTAL MOTION Upon visiting new cities we instinctively look upwards, seeking out grand monuments that define the place. Here in the Danish capital, the iconic Little Mermaid statue has caused generations of visitors to utter the same four words: “But she’s so small!” Therein lies the key to understanding Copenhagen. The Little Mermaid isn’t small, you see. She’s life-size. Much like the city that she calls home. If it’s monuments you’re after in Copenhagen, look all around you. Right there at street level. Our greatest monument is motion. It is a massive, constant, rhythmic and life-sized legacy. This never-ending flow of Copenhageners on bicycles has been forty years in the making. In the 1960s, this city was just as car-clogged as anywhere else. Visionary decisions were made and the result can be seen all around you. The vast network of safe, segregated bike lanes crisscrossing the city has encouraged us to choose the bicycle. The people who make up this organic monument are from all walks of life. From every age and wage bracket. We don’t have cyclists in Copen- hagen, we merely have people who happen to ride their bicycles. Cycling in Copenhagen brings us closer to the life of the city and the people who inhabit it. Your fellow citizens are right there next to you, propelling themselves effortlessly through the urban landscape. We are one with our town on our bicycles. 2 MONUMENTAL MOTION MODAL SHARE OF TRIPS IN 2012 HOW MUCH DO COPENHAGENERS CYCLE? 6% 11% 20% 26% 1.27 M 25% 36% 14% Cycled

Copenhagen, Denmark Copenhagen made the short list of eight finalists for the title of European Green Capital. Wind turbines in Copenhagen Harbor contribute to the sector that produces nearly 25 percent of the country's electricity output. Credit: iStockphoto The year 2010 was established as the inaugural year for awarding the title of “European Green Capital,” and eligible European Union countries were encouraged to enter their most environmentally conscious cities in a contest to select the awardees for both 2010 and 2011 simultaneously. The award serves to acknowledge work already being done at the municipal level to make environmental stewardship an integral part of urban planning and to provide an incentive for cities to intensify their efforts to improve the quality of life in the urban habitat. Thirty-five European cities vied for the title 1 European Green Capital, and after the first round of elimination, Copenhagen, Denmark, was on the short list of eight finalists. Although Hamburg won the award for 2010 and Stockholm for 2011, it is notable that Copenhagen scored higher than both of these cities in the important category of water consumption (conservation of water through water metering and prevention of leakage during transport through water pipes). Ten criteria were used for ranking the cities; in addition to its superior showing in the water consumption category, Copenhagen tied with or had higher scores than at least one of the winning cities in three other categories: local mobility and passenger transportation, sustainable management of the local authority, and sustainable land use. Copenhagen's impressive showing as a finalist is not surprising, given its well-established record of implementing innovative projects that enrich life in the urban milieu for its 1.1 million inhabitants, while fulfilling its commitment to sustainable development.

Copenhagen Survival Guide ― Transit ― Buses, S-train, and Metro - These are the most common means of public transit in Copenhagen. The travel price is based on moving between different zones. It’s more economical to buy a clipcard (“klippekort”, available until early 2015) or an anony‐ mous Rejsekort (refillable card) from vending machines or 7/11’s. Note: Taxis are ex‐ tremely expensive. For more information visit: http://www.rejseplanen.dk Bike rental - Highly recommended. The absolute best way to experience Copenha‐ gen, and get around its neighborhoods, is by bike. One can’t overemphasize the im‐ portance of a bike in making a fun visit. Nearly all bike shops rent bikes, we recom‐ mend Baisikeli on Ingerslevsgade 80 in Vesterbro (http://baisikeli.dk). Also, city bikes are a free option. With a map and a bike you’ll get the most out of the city. ― Neighborhood Overview ― Østerbro - Wealthier neighborhood at the east and northeast of the city center. Nørrebro - A cool and less expensive neighborhood north of the city center, home to many Middle Eastern immigrants and young people. Recommended streets: Jægers‐ borggade (http://jaegersborggade.com/wpAB/en/), and Blågårdsgade. Indreby - The city center is home to a number of museums, the city hall (Rådhus), Amalienborg palace, Tivoli amusement park, and the main shopping street, Strøget. Recommended: Nyhavn, for Lego goodies visit the Lego store on Vimmelskaftet 37. Vesterbro - The old red-light district west of the central train station on Istegade is now a hip and grungy neighborhood. It’s home to Asian grocery shops and restau‐ rants as well as the meatpacking district with restaurants and clubs.
