ENZO FERRARI 1898–1988 THE PHOTOGRAPHIC BIOGRAPHY By Doug Nye Following Evro’s acclaimed illustrated memoirs of Brian Redman, John Surtees and Stirling Moss, the appealing format of these books — wonderful photos accompanied by insightful text — is applied to the greatest figure in 20th century motor racing. In the aftermath of the Second World War, Enzo Ferrari went into the sport with magnificent V12-engined cars and very quickly achieved unparalleled success in Formula 1 and sports car racing, and built magnificent road cars too. In this book, distinguished author Doug Nye explores the life and achievements of this enigmatic man, alongside a splendid array of photos, many not previously published. 400 pages • 280x235mm • over 250 photos, mainly colour Doug Nye has written some 70 books, a good number of them ISBN: 978-1-910505-20-5 about Ferrari. Publication • The 1971 season: with promising youngster Emerson August 2019 Fittipaldi elevated to team leader after Rindt’s death, great things were expected of the 72’s second season but it proved to be winless. • The 1972 season: now in black and gold John Player livery, the 72 became far more competitive and Fittipaldi’s four Grand Prix victories made him World Champion. • The 1973 season: Ronnie ‘SuperSwede’ Peterson joined Fittipaldi to form a dream team and together they won seven races, but because Lotus’s spoils were divided between the two drivers Jackie Stewart was able to come through to become World Champion. • The 1974 season: still the 72 soldiered on, now as the fall-back car after its successor, the 76, failed to deliver; partnered by Jacky Ickx, Peterson won three Grands Prix. PETE LYONS • The 1975 season: well beyond its sell-by date, the 72 did a FOREWORD BY EMERSON FITTIPALDI final season but by now it was far from effective, with Ickx’s second place in the tragic Spanish Grand Prix its best result. Pete Lyons, Autosport’s renowned Formula 1 reporter for part of the Lotus 72 era, explores the car’s entire race-by-race career in his insightful commentary accompanying a magnificent array of over 325 photos. 304 pages • 280x235mm • over 340 photos, mainly colour ISBN: 978-1-910505-33-5 California-based Pete Lyons, revered Autosport Formula 1 reporter of the 1970s, once declared the 72 ‘my favourite US $79.95 CDN $90.00 Lotus’. • The Porsche Type List
The Porsche Type List When Professor Ferdinand Porsche started his business, the company established a numeric record of projects known as the Type List. As has been reported many times in the past, the list began with Type 7 so that Wanderer-Werke AG did not realize they were the company’s first customer. Of course, as a result, Porsche’s famous car, the 356 as defined on the Type List, was actually Porsche’s 350th design project. In reviewing the Porsche Type List enclosed on this website, you might notice several interesting aspects. First, although there is a strong chronological alignment of Type numbers, it is certainly not perfect. No official explanation exists as to why this occurs. It is possible that Type numbers were originally treated only as an informal configuration and data management tool and today’s rigorous examination of Porsche history is but an aberration of 20/20 hindsight. Secondly, you might also notice that there were variations on Type List numbers that were probably made rather spontaneously. For example, consider the Type 60 with its many “K” variations to designate different body styles. Also consider how the Type 356 was initially a tube frame chassis then changed to a sheet metal chassis with the annotation 356/2 but the /2 later reused to describe different body/engine offerings. Then there were the variants on the 356 annotated as 356 SL, 356A, 356B, and 356C designations and in parallel there were the 356 T1 through 356 T7 designations. Not to mention, of course, the trademark infringement threat that caused the Type 901 to be externally re-designated as the 911.

  • 1968 − 1984 Colin: the Busy Baby by Margaret Mcrae
1968 − 1984 Colin: the busy baby by Margaret McRae Colin Steele McRae was born on August 5, 1968. It was a Monday. He was born in the William Smellie Maternity Hospital in Lanark. And he was a much-wanted child – a first grandchild for my parents, however Jim’s mum and dad already had two. It’s from Jim’s mum that Colin took the name Steele – it was her maiden name. We were living in Blackwood, about five miles from Lanark, in those days. And it was to the house in Vere Road, Blackwood that we would have taken Colin home – if we hadn’t still been renovating the cottage at the time. Instead, we went and stayed with my parents for two or three weeks while we finished the work on the house. This was actually quite a God-send as my dad wasn’t feeling too well at the time and having a newborn baby in the house really took his mind off things. He spent all of his time, just focused on the baby. Right from the off, Colin was a busy baby and, unfortunately for us, not a baby to whom sleep came easily or quickly. I think he stayed in our room for about seven weeks, before we knew the time had come for him to go into his own room. I don’t think Colin really slept through the night completely for about two years. Alister, his younger brother, was something of a revelation by comparison and slept really quickly. It’s fair to say, Colin wasn’t an easy baby.

  • Technological Discontinuities, Radical Innovation and Social
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Nottingham Trent Institutional Repository (IRep) Technological discontinuities, outsiders and social capital: A case study from Formula 1 David J. Smith Nottingham Business School, Nottingham Trent University, Nottingham NG1 4BU, United Kingdom Abstract Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine how and why outsiders, rather than incumbents, are able to take advantage of technological discontinuities. Design/ methodology/approach – The paper employs a case study of a single innovation that transformed the technology of Formula 1 motor racing. Findings – The findings show how social capital made up of ‘weak ties’ in the form of informal personal networks, enabled an outsider to successfully make the leap to a new technological regime. Practical implications – The findings show that where new product development involves a shift to new technologies, social capital can have an important part to play. Originality/value – It is widely accepted that radical innovations are often competence destroying, making it difficult for incumbents to make the transition to a new technology. The findings show how the social capital of outsiders can place them at a particular advantage in utilizing new technologies. Keywords: Innovation; Outsiders; Social Capital; Technological Discontinuities; Paper type Research paper Biographical note: David Smith is Professor of Innovation Management at Nottingham BusinesPostprints School, Nottingham Trent University, Nottingham NG1 4BU UK. Introduction Studies of a number of industry sectors (Christensen, 1997) have shown that radical innovations are significantly more likely to originate with firms that are outsiders rather than industry incumbents, especially if the innovations involve competence destroying rather than competence enhancing technological discontinuities.
