Aimee Challenor 58A Charterhouse Road Coventry, CV1 2BJ Aimee@Aimeec.Co.Uk Aimee Challenor 58A Charterhouse Road Coventry, CV1 2BJ [email protected] Friday the 13th of July 2018 ‘Pride in London’ London LGBT+ Community Pride CIC, PO Box 71920, London NW2 9QN Dear Pride in London organisers, I write to you to present you with an Open Letter signed by over two thousand members and friends of the LGBTQ+ community in Britain and around the world. The letter condemns the transphobia that led the parade during Pride in London 2018, it calls for a full apology from Pride in London, it also calls for a change in the Board at Pride in London, to ensure that the failings that allowed the horrific exclusionary behaviour that was front and centre on Saturday never happens again. Signatories to the Open Letter are as diverse as our community itself, amongst the signatories are politicians, doctors, activists, teachers, trade unionists, prison officers, students, and so many more. There are signatories with long histories of campaigning for Equality, and there are signatories from members of the community who are in the closet. I sincerely hope you will hear the concerns of the community, that will truly apologise without the ifs and the buts, and that we will see genuine meaningful change, to ensure transphobia is not given a platform at Pride again. We have united to say there is #NoPrideInTransphobia, I hope you will stand with us. Yours, Aimee Challenor 20-year-old student Photographer Politician Trans woman. Letter condemning exclusion at Pride in London 2018 We the undersigned, members and friends of the LGBTQ+ community, condemn the horrific exclusionary behaviour that took place at Pride in London 2018. We are saddened that yet again we are having to condemn the actions of Pride organisers for their exclusion and hostility towards the trans community. This is not the first time we have had to do this. There is no space in Pride for transphobia, trans people pose no threat to cis women, and face frequent abuse and exclusion. Trans people are integral to our LGBTQ+ Community and must be celebrated and protected. We do not believe the excuse used by Pride in London who claim that allowing transphobes to lead the parade was done in the name of safety. Trans people should be able to celebrate Pride safely, the actions of Pride in London compromised this safety. We call for a full apology from Pride in London, as well as a change in the Board behind Pride in London, in the hopes that future events do not have similar issues. We stand proudly with our trans and non-binary friends, many of whom have been at the forefront for campaigning for better LGBTQ+ rights in Britain and around the world. Signed, 1. In the United Kingdom, the election for the country’s 73 Members of the European Parliament will be held on Thursday 22 May 2014. The elections come at a crucial junction for UK-EU relations, and are likely to have far-reaching consequences for the UK’s relationship with the rest of Europe: a surge in support for the UK Independence Party (UKIP) could lead to a Britain that is increasingly dis-engaged from the EU policy-making process. In parallel, the current UK Government is also conducting a review of the EU’s powers and Prime Minister David Cameron has repeatedly pushed for a ‘repatriation’ of powers from the European to the national level. These long-term political developments aside, the elections will also have more direct and tangible consequences.

In Lamond, I. & Moss, J. (Ed.) Liminality and Critical Event Studies: Boundaries, Borders, and Contestation. London: Palgrave Macmillan. 79-98. The Privilege of Subversion Manuscript Barbara Grabher ABSTRACT In this paper, Grabher examines Turner’s theory of liminality in the context of queer political aspirations of LGBT-themed events. The week-long event series entitled LGBT50, part of Hull’s celebration of the title UK City of Culture in 2017, serves as a case study. Grabher draws on Turner’s concept in light of the widely discussed transformative potential of the event. As the concept proposes a suspension of hegemonic structures and exploration of alternative models of living, the researcher regards the empirical realities of the LGBT50 celebrations through ethnographic research practices. Hereby, she correlates considerations of cultural actors and visitors in a call for a more nuanced understanding of the transformative potential of queer-labelled events.
