Goldfrank This essay originated at the time that ASEC was in its early stages and in response to a requestthat I write something aboutthe church Fathers in medieval Rus'. I already knew finding the patrology concerning just the original Greek and Syriac texts is nothing short of a researcher’s black hole. It is a research tool for the study of Syriac saints and hagiographic texts. The Gateway to the Syriac Saints is a two-volume database: 1) Qadishe and 2) Bibliotheca Hagiographica Syriaca Electronica (BHSE). Hagiography, the lives of the saints, is a multiform genre. It contains elements of myth, history, biblical exegesis, romance, and theology. The production of saints’ lives blossomed in late antiquity alongside the growth of the cult of the saints. Scholars have attended to hagiographic traditions in Greek and Latin, but many scholars have yet to Journal of Religion, Media and Digital Culture Volume 5, Issue 1 (2016) https://jrmdc.com 184 discover the richness of Syriac hagiographic literature: the stories, homilies, and hymns on the saints that Christians of the Middle East told and preserved. SYNAXARION, COPTO-ARABIC, List of Saints Used in the Coptic Church
(CE:2171b-2190a) SYNAXARION, COPTO-ARABIC, list of saints used in the Coptic church. [This entry consists of two articles, Editions of the Synaxarion and The List of Saints.] Editions of the Synaxarion This book, which has become a liturgical book, is very important for the history of the Coptic church. It appears in two forms: the recension from Lower Egypt, which is the quasi-official book of the Coptic church from Alexandria to Aswan, and the recension from Upper Egypt. Egypt has long preserved this separation into two Egypts, Upper and Lower, and this division was translated into daily life through different usages, and in particular through different religious books. This book is the result of various endeavors, of which the Synaxarion itself speaks, for it mentions different usages here or there. It poses several questions that we cannot answer with any certainty: Who compiled the Synaxarion, and who was the first to take the initiative? Who made the final revision, and where was it done? It seems evident that the intention was to compile this book for the Coptic church in imitation of the Greek list of saints, and that the author or authors drew their inspiration from that work, for several notices are obviously taken from the Synaxarion called that of Constantinople. The reader may have recourse to several editions or translations, each of which has its advantages and its disadvantages. Let us take them in chronological order. The oldest translation (German) is that of the great German Arabist F. Wüstenfeld, who produced the edition with a German translation of part of al-Maqrizi's Khitat, concerning the Coptic church, under the title Macrizi's Geschichte der Copten (Göttingen, 1845). -

STROGANOV MINYEIAS JUNE Side A Row 1 June 1: Saint Justin the Philosopher was born around 114 and was raised studying in various Greek schools. At the age of thirteen, he was baptized and began to search for Christian philosophy. In the year 155, when Emperor Antoninus Pius started to persecute Christians, Saint Justin personally gave him an apology in defense of two Christians who were innocently condemned to execution. When he arrived in Rome to debate with Crescentius, who he had always beaten, he found that there were many false accu- sations against him brought to the court and Saint Justin was imprisoned on false charges. He was killed in the year 165. June 1: Saint Dionysius of Glushitsa was one of the greatest ascetics of St. Petersburg, Russia. After being tonsured, he spent nine years in a monastery until he went to a remote area named Saint Luke. There he established a monastery dedicated to Saint Nicholas. Monks began to gather at the site and soon he needed to build another monastery. The saint fell ill on May 29, 1437, and died three days later on June 1 at the age of 74. June 2: Saint Nicephorus, Patriarch of Constantinople, was born in 758 and was raised reading the Holy Scriptures. He was pressured by the emperor Nicephorus to lead the imperial city’s main poorhouse. After four years, Saint Nicephorus was tonsured and became the Patriarch of Constantinople on April 12, 806. After Leo the Armenian took the throne, Saint Nicephorus was exiled and tortured for his beliefs. -

Biblical and Parabiblical Women in Late Antique Christian Liturgy An Eclectic Overview* Harald BUCHINGER Universität Regensburg In Christian liturgy, saints appear in three prominent places. Firstly, feasts of the sanctoral cycle of annual celebrations are dedicated exclu- sively to the veneration of particular figures. Originally, such cults are strictly focused on the date of the death (understood and addressed as a “birthday” into heavenly life) and fixed to the place of martyrdom or burial; only secondarily does the exchange of sanctoral commemorations become a medium for networking between different communities and regions1. Secondly, lists of saints are commemorated in the intercessions of Eucharistic prayers, that is, a structural component in which the univer- sal communion of those partaking in the Eucharist comes to be developed. While these saints come from both the Bible and – much more importantly – from Christian history, a third function is reserved for biblical charac- ters: paradigms from the Bible are invoked in certain prayers either as examples of God’s salvific activity or as role models for those for whose benefit the prayer is spoken. For pragmatic reasons, the following survey is limited to the liturgy of late antique Jerusalem, the “mother of all churches”2, and to the Byzantine and Roman liturgies as those which have become the dominant rites of Eastern and Western Christianity. * The conference in March 2019 in Be᾿en Sheva῾ and the research for this paper were funded by the DFG-Centre for Advanced Studies “Beyond Canon” (FOR 2770) at the University of Regensburg. -

The sado-erotic voyeurism invited can be placed in historical and performative continuity with the Roman spectacle, literary ambivalence over female chastity, and both geographical and heresiographical fantasies about the sexual and cultural predilections of the Other. The spectacle of sado-erotic violence allows the enjoyment of erotic display at the same time as the disavowal of that enjoyment, which is projected onto the violently punitive actions of Roman authorities, heathen mobs, or (in eschatology) angels of hell. It also allows masochistic identification with victims’ eroticized brutalization and dissolution. MARTYROLOGY/PORNOGRAPHY The discussion of martyrology and its graphic details has grown quite sophisticated in recent years. Where once historians would scrutinize the texts for historical reliability and for evidence
