    Becoming Saints: Coptic Orthodox Monasticism, Exemplarity, & Negotiating Christian Virtue by Joseph Youssef A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Anthropology University of Toronto © Copyright by Joseph Youssef (2019) Becoming Saints: Coptic Orthodox Monasticism, Exemplarity, & Negotiating Christian Virtue Joseph Youssef Doctor of Philosophy Department of Anthropology University of Toronto 2019 Abstract Based on 13 months of transnational ethnographic fieldwork between Egypt, Southern California, and Toronto, this dissertation examines questions around exemplarity, morality, and the cultivation of virtue among Coptic Orthodox Christians. Specifically, this thesis investigates the relationship between Coptic monks and the wider Coptic community. Many Copts view monasticism as a morally exemplary way of life. The monk as one who has forsaken all social ties and lives in the desert is regarded as one who has attained the highest form of virtue. This view results in different levels of engagement with monastic practice and competing voices for what it means to be a Coptic Christian. As will be demonstrated through ethnographic details, there is a gap between the ideals of the Coptic monastic imaginary and the lived reality of negotiating Christian virtue for monks and laity alike. Furthermore, this dissertation unpacks the ways in which Coptic monasticism is (re-)imagined and (re-)produced in North America and how Coptic subjectivity is (re-)negotiated in relation to Egypt and the Mother Church. ii Acknowledgments Becoming exemplary is a process as this dissertation will soon show.     The Martyrology of the Monastery of the Ascension Introduction History of Martyrologies The Martyrology is an official liturgical book of the Catholic Church. The official Latin version of the Martyrology contains a short liturgical service the daily reading of the Martyrology’s list of saints for each day. The oldest surviving martyologies are the lists of martyrs and bishops from the fourth-century Roman Church. The martyrology wrongly attributed to St. Jerome was written in Ital in the second half of the fifth century, but all the surviving versions of it come from Gaul. It is a simple martyrology, which lists the name of the saint and the date and place of death of the saint. Historical martyrologies give a brief history of the saints. In the eighth and ninth centuries, St. Bede, Rhabanus Maurus, and Usuard all wrote historical martyrologies. The Roman Martyrology, based primarily on Usuard’s, was first published in 1583, and the edition of 1584 was made normative in the Roman rite by Gregory XIII. The post-Vatican II revision appeared first in 2001. A revision that corrected typographical errors and added 117 people canonized by Pope John Paul II between 2001 and 2004, appeared in 2005.1 The Purpose and Principles of This Martyology The primary purpose of this martyrology is to provide an historically accurate text for liturgical use at the monastery, where each day after noon prayer it is customary to read the martyrology for the following day. Some things in this martyrology are specific to the Monastery of the Ascension: namesdays of the members of the community, anniversaries of members of the community who have died, a few references to specific events or saints of local interest.

Many more Saints and Martyrs have since been entered into this calendar commemorating the heroic faith, the holy deeds, the exemplary lives, and in many cases the glorious deaths of these Milites Christi, or Soldiers of Christ, who gave 1 every fiber of their being to God for His glory, for the sanctification of His Holy Catholic Church, for the conversion of sinners both at home and in partibus infidelium 1, for the salvation of souls, and for the proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, even as He had last commanded His holy Apostles: “Euntes ergo docete omnes gentes: baptizantes eos in nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti. Docentes eos servare omnia quæcumque mandavi vobis.” “Going therefore, teach all nations: baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you.” (St. Matthew 28.19-20) While the Martyrology presented is complete, it nevertheless does not present us with great detail concerning the lives of those whose names are forever indited within it, still less the complete circumstances surrounding and leading up to their martyrdom. For greater detail of their lives, the sources now available on the Internet are extensive and we encourage you to explore them.2 As it stands, the Martyrology is eminently suited to a brief daily reflection that will inspire us to greater fervor, even to imitate these conspicuously holy men and women in whatever measure our own state in life affords us through the grace and providence of Almighty God.

Sandro knows that I am writing a book about the stories of Swiss Egyptians and Egyptian Swiss; there are about 20 books and studies on that same subject that I know of. The earliest I have read is dated 1946 made by Jean Rene Fiecther (1894-1981) commemorating the 20 th anniversary of the Journal d'Egypte et du Proche Orient , the bulletin which Fiecther helped founding in Alexandria and was directing till 1955, and the latest is the Lizenziatsarbeit of Anna Regula Meili from the University of Zurich dated 2009. Most of those works are either autobiographies of Swiss recording their lives in Egypt, or dissertation made for academic purposes, or finally those dedicated for recording lives of Swiss individuals and families in Egypt. My book – I hope – will partly belong to that last category. So in response to Sandro 's request I decided to write the story of my book. The book story What prompted me to write that book is my personal previous experience with Switzerland. It started since 1953 when my late father came to Zurich to obtain his doctoral degree from the Federal Institute of Technology of Zurich best known as the ETH.

    Verena Gorge and Hermitage Solothurn Legend The Verena Gorge is an idyllic spot full of legend, grottos, chapels, streams and paths, set in the forest on the edge of Solo- thurn. The gorge is named after the saintly Verena who lived there in solitude for many years after the death of the Solothurn martyrs, Urs and Victor. The story begins long ago in ancient Egypt. The martyrs of Solothurn, Urs and Victor were part of the Theban legion or- dered back to Rome on command of the Emperors Diokletian and Maximian. Having lived among the Christians in Thebes, they believed in only one God and refused Maximian's orders to worship the gods of Rome. As a result Maximian ordered the execution of every 10th man and when this had no effect, the massacre of the entire legion. However, 66 men under the leadership of Urs and Victor managed to escape to Salodurum (now Solothurn). Here they were taken prisoner by the governor Hirtakus and put to torture. When they still refused to renounce the faith, Hirtakus had wooden stakes erected in the "Hermesbühlplatz" and gave the prisoners the choice of either paying Homage to the gods Jupiter and Mercury or burning at the stake. The Thebans still remained true to their God and legend says that as they were led to the fires, threatening black clouds appeared and before the first legionnaire could be pushed into the fire, heavy rain poured down and put out the flames. The terrified onlookers fled into the town. Hirtakus, however, was not afraid and ordered the Thebans to be beheaded by the bridge.
