Instituto Cervantes Pekín celebrates International Women Day with a film series of movies made by Spanish women filmmakers. Female Stories will be screened on March with a selection of very recent titles that show the increasing role that women are taking in Spanish film direction. The movies filmed during the 90s were already anticipating this path. Women’s active participation in this art brought a different insight into Spanish cinema while they were creating their very own stories. Although during the next decade their entry into film direction was not regularized, there existed a framework that increased their professional visibility and their very own identity as female directors. China’s film industry has followed a similar path where the 20 th Century has seen how the number of movies filmed by women has increased remarkably.

Within the framework of the film series Historias en femenino, Belaustegui and Ying will hold a debate on the professional challenges faced by both Chinese and Spanish filmmakers. Their exchange of ideas will unveil how Spanish and Chinese cinema filmed by women reflects the female conscience of their respective cultures and the stereotypes behind this genre.

The screening of Even the Rain (2010) will follow the debate and will mark the start of the Film series Female Stories . The film directed by Icíar Bollaín tells the story of Costa, a film producer, and Sebastián, a young and visionary filmmaker. “They are working together on a very ambitious project that they will shoot in Bolivia. Their film will be on the story of the arrival of Spaniards to America. However Costa and Sebastián couldn’t imagine in Bolivia they will have to face a tremendous challenge that will force them to embark themselves in opposite emotional trips”.

Marta Belaustegui ’s career as an actress is complemented by her commitment against gender inequalities. Since 2006 she directs the Film Festival on women filmmakers Festival de Cine de Mujeres en dirección de Cuenca . The film festival is aimed at promoting cinema made by women directors. In 2009 she won the prize from the Spanish Ministry for gender equality due to her role in the movie project, “Less is more” (-es +). She also played the leading role in the movies Malena es nombre de tango and Aunque estés lejos.

Ning Ying started her career as an assistant of in the movie . Since then her success has increased exponentially. In 1990, she filmed her very first comedy, Someone loves just me . The film became one of the 10 more acclaimed movies in the Chinese market. In 2005, with Perpetual Motion , Ying Ning became an icon of Chinese contemporary movie scene. Critics consider the movie a turning point of the conception of women within Chinese cinema. Nin Ying has also filmed documentaries like Railroad of hope . She has also contested several festivals such as Venice, Toronto, Hong Kong and Locarno.
