Bellchambers as 'probably the most brilliant maker of his time outside London'. One of the finest examples of his work is the equation of time clock with musical movement on a nest of eleven bells, situated in Powderham Castle and made for the Courtenay family in the mid 18th century. Stumbles worked at both Averton Gifford near Kingsbridge and then Totnes. He married Sarah Phillips in 1716, moving to Totnes in 1729 after the death of two of his children, and died in 1769, two years after his wife. It is noted that unusually shaped nameplates, as seen on this example, are a feature of Stumbles thirty-hour work.
