February 11, 2016 The Honorable Mr. Barack Obama President of the United States of America The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20500 Dear Mr. President, As members of parliament from Southeast Asia, dedicated to the promotion and protection of human rights, we write to express our desire for you to make discussion of human rights and the democratic aspirations of the people of ASEAN a priority during the upcoming summit at the Sunnylands estate in California on 15-16 February 2016. As you are surely aware, democracy is struggling in Southeast Asia. Many countries in our region have taken dramatic steps backward in the past two years. While Southeast Asia appeared to be on the cusp of a genuine political transformation only a few years ago, more recently the region has instead witnessed military takeovers, the rollback of fundamental rights, intensifying government-sponsored discrimination against ethnic and religious minorities, and the increasing persecution of activists and opposition voices, including fellow parliamentarians. These setbacks constitute a fundamental threat to the future of the ASEAN Community and the US relationship with it. While we recognize and understand your administration’s desire to strengthen trade and security cooperation with Southeast Asian governments, we urge you to proceed with caution. Human rights, democracy, and basic dignity cannot take a backseat to economic or security prerogatives. Open dialogue on fundamental political and rights-based questions is vital to ensuring the sustainability of bilateral relationships and promoting broad-based benefits of trans-Pacific cooperation. When you sit down with ASEAN leaders in California, we urge you to press them on unfulfilled human rights commitments and to directly raise specific concerns with them.

PAS: Infighting not reason for bigger loss MalaysiaKini.com Sept 26, 2014 P KUBOR Faced with a bigger loss at the Pengkalan Kubor by-election, PAS insists that it is not due to infighting within the party. PAS by-election director Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said that neither is it caused by the absence of top Pakatan Rakyat leaders during campaign. "Overall, the absence of Pakatan leaders, especially DAP wasn't a big deal. It's not a factor. "It's just internal polemics about what happened. If we look at it, everyone went to ground (to campaign). "The matter of (internal) problems did not arise. I accept what happened," he said during a press conference after BN's victory was announced. PAS' Wan Rosdi Wan Ibrahim (right) lost to BN by 2,635 votes - an addition of 899 votes to the majority BN garnered at last year's general election. Tuan Ibrahim, nevethless, admitted that today's result had a big impact on PAS as it lost by a wider margin. "I am sad of course, but we have strived, perservered, and are resigned to fate," he said. BN's Mat Razi Mat Ismail had received 9,961 votes, PAS 7,326, while the Independent candidate won 37 votes. In 13th general elections, BN's Noor Zahidi had beaten PKR's Saharun Ibrahim and independent Izat Bukhary with a majority of 1,736 votes. BN goodies to blame Instead, Tuan Ibrahim blamed PAS' lost on handouts by BN to poor constituents. "Among the poor, such big handouts might be a factor.

  • Saiful Says Father 'Influenced' Into Apologising to Anwar Malaysian
Saiful says father ‘influenced’ into apologising to Anwar Malaysian Insider May 2,2013 By Md Izwan PETALING JAYA, May 2 ― In an anticipated move, Saiful Bukhari claimed his father Azlan Mohd Lazim was swayed into apologising to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim after the latter retracted his apology and maintained that his son’s sodomy complaint against the opposition leader was not a plot. Saiful (picture) also claimed to have sworn on the Quran for the second time, this time in before the Kaabah in the Muslim holy land of Mecca, to back his allegation that he was sodomised by the PKR de facto leader. The former aide Anwar said it was clear that his father was persuaded by PKR to make the public apology because the leader who arranged the closed-door press conference on March 8 was one of the party’s top leaders, Datuk Johari Abdul. “Is it not clear that the individual who arranged the closed-door press conference was PKR leader Datuk Johari. “I do not know who instigated my father but it is obvious that the party leader is close to my father,” Saiful told a press conference at The Club, in Bandar Utama here. Azlan claimed yesterday that “certain quarters” had influenced him to apologise to Anwar and say it was a political conspiracy in a closed-door press conference last March 8. “Today, I retract my apology to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and stress that my son’s sodomy case is true. “It isn’t a political conspiracy,” he told a press conference at a hotel in Kajang, adding he will now quit PKR.

Such action is long overdue. Burma’s military regime has carried out brutal attacks on its own people for decades. According to the Thailand Burma Border Consortium (TBBC), a humanitarian agency providing aid to Burmese refugees and displaced persons for 25 years, through these attacks, the regime has destroyed over 3,500 ethnic minority villages in eastern Burma since 1996. Here, at least 75,000 people were forced to leave their homes during this past year alone, and more than half a million people remain internally displaced. TBBC has described the situation in Burma as being comparable to the situation in Darfur. Furthermore, these crimes against humanity in Burma are well documented by various UN bodies, although none of them have taken effective action.

  • Pakatan Belum Utus Surat Kepada Agong Malaysiakini.
Pakatan vs BN: 12,000 turn to prayer Malaysiakini.com January 10, 2011 In a show of force, some 12,000 PAS members turned up at a special prayer session last night to seek divine intervention 'to save the country from BN'. They also prayed that Pakatan Rakyat will be able to overcome the turmoil in Selangor and in the Anwar Ibrahim sodomy trial. "We are together with Selangor Menteri Besar (Abdul) Khalid Ibrahim in defending (the state) against BN," said PAS vice-president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, who opened the session held at the Melawati Stadium in Shah Alam. The event began at around 7pm with those assembled performing Maghrib prayers together, after which PAS deputy spiritual advisor Harun Din delivered a talk. The special prayer session followed the Isyak prayers led by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang. Those who attended included Anwar, Khalid, PKR deputy president Azmin Ali, Shah Alam parliamentarian Khalid Samad, PAS deputy president Nasharuddin Md Isa. "This prayer is to Allah to save our country, to solve the problems plaguing Selangor and the attacks against Anwar in the sodomy trial, as well as to give us victory in the upcoming general election," according to an announcement. PAS spiritual advisor Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat was delayed enroute but was wheeled into the stadium in a wheelchair after the prayer, arriving to the rousing cheers and shouts of "Takbir" from the crowd. The floor was packed with 5,000 people - mainly PAS members - while thousands of others followed the session from seats in the gallery above.
