Unexpected Is What God Does by Christine Caine There’s a conversation in the Bible I would have loved to have overheard firsthand. It’s among the three women who were on their way to the tomb of Jesus to anoint His body with spices and perfume. Because He had died on a Friday, and the Jewish Sabbath was the next day, His body hadn’t been anointed and prepared for burial like it would have normally have been. Joseph of Arimathea, a highly respected member of the Jewish council who lived expectantly on the lookout for the kingdom of God, had worked up his courage, gone to Pilate, and asked for Jesus’ body (Mark 15:42-45). Pilate agreed, so Joseph wrapped Jesus’ body in linen and placed Him in a cave-like tomb cut out of a rock — unprepared for burial. Then, he had a massive stone rolled against the entrance to the tomb. The stone probably weighed at least two thousand pounds, and it would have been rolled down an incline to seal the tomb most likely by as many as twenty men. This was customary at the time to prevent grave robbers from stealing the body or other objects inside the tomb. And because Jesus was such a figure of notoriety at the time, there were also armed guards stationed in front of His tomb as another measure of protection. So, on Sunday morning, just afer sunrise, the three women — Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome — were on their way with spices to perfume Jesus’ body. Imagine how sobering their walk must have been. Imagine how despondent they must have felt. Their spirits had been crushed. The one who had given them purpose, value, dignity, the one whom they had loved was now dead. Jesus had been their teacher, their Lord. They thought He was going to be the Messiah, and now He was gone. And even though He had been dead for close to two days, long enough to have a stench, they still wanted to anoint Him for burial. They loved Him, so they went, and their surprising conversation began… Very early on the first day of the week, just afer sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb and they asked each other, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?” — Mark 16:2-3 Now, I don’t mean to make light of their conversation or sense of loss, but it strikes me as out of place that of all the details they’d remembered, they started musing about the biggest obstacle on the way to the tomb. Surely they had thought out their plans ahead of time… Set our alarms before sunrise. Check. Gather all the spices. Check. Don’t forget the perfume. Check. But they forgot one BIG practical detail. The one that separated them from the Lord they loved. Who will remove that stone? A two-thousand-pound stone that normally took twenty people to move — downhill into position. Why didn’t we invite any men along? Like more than twenty of them? Impossible. Immoveable. Too large. Too heavy. Too out of their control. A solid object standing between them and Jesus that they couldn’t move with their own strength.

body of christ church every1one.org 2 Sound familiar? How many of us have come to this same realization, that there is an immoveable object between us and Jesus, and there is no way for us to remove it in our own strength? When dreams haven’t been realized. When bills can’t be paid. When marriages won’t work. When children seem out of control. When habits can’t be broken. When grades can’t be made. When people can’t be pleased. When emotions can’t be contained. When fears won’t subside. We all have known those kinds of stones, and they can feel just as heavy as the one that sealed Jesus’ tomb. We all know what it is to face seemingly insurmountable obstacles in our lives — huge immovable objects that block our future. Things that seem like no-one can ever remove them from our lives. Things we expect to live with forever. Stones that seem to seal the death of our dreams, hopes and desires. Like these women, we wonder, Who will roll away the stone from the entrance of the tomb? I love the continuation of the women’s story… But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. — Mark 16:4 The women had finally stopped talking about the stone and looked up. When you look up, your perspective changes. When you look up, you see unexpected things you never thought you could see. I lif up my eyes to the mountains. Where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth. — Psalm 121:1-2 These women came to the tomb expecting one thing, but found something entirely unexpected. What was impossible was suddenly possible. The unimaginable was suddenly imaginable. The inconceivable was suddenly conceivable. The immoveable had been moved. As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed. “Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid Him. But go, tell His disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as He told you.’ — Mark 16:5-7 He has risen! He is not here. The stone was rolled away so the women could get in — not so Jesus could escape. He didn’t need it moved, but they did. And what the women could never have done for themselves was done for them — and Jesus does the same for us. Jesus removes the stones that block our access to Him. He does what we can never do. Why? Because impossible is where He starts. Miracles are what He does. He does the unexpected. I don’t know what you’re facing today, but it’s time to stop looking at the stones that seem immoveable. It’s time to stop looking down and look up! It’s time to stop looking back and look up! It’s time to stop looking around and look up! Look up to the resurrected Christ because where you look is where you will go, and it’s time to go forward and fulfill all that God’s has created you to be and called you to do. It’s time to expect the unexpected. Original devotion written for Devotionals Daily by Christine Caine, author of Unexpected, copyright Christine Caine.

MY Three Sons as ONE

SON of GOD Luke 1:35 The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called the Son of God.

John 11:27 She replied, “Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God who comes into the world.”

Matthew 27:54 Now when the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and what took place, they were extremely terrified and said, “Truly this one was God’s Son!”

Luke 4:41 Demons also came out of many, crying out, “You are the Son of God!” But he rebuked them, and would not allow them to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ.

John 20:31 But these are recorded so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

Why, you might ask, does Jesus not say so plainly. I think the answer is found in Matthew 16:15 He said to them, “And who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 And Jesus answered him, “You are blessed, Simon son of Jonah, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but my Father in heaven!” (Matthew 16:15-17).

Jesus did not want Peter and His disciples to believe He was the Son of God just because He said so. He wanted God to bring them to this conclusion, based upon the overwhelming evidence of Scripture, our Lord’s life, teaching, power to heal and deliver all before The Crucifixion, The beatings, the Death, Burial, and The Resurrection, and…

Saving, Healing, and Delivering ppl still to this day!

SON of MAN The simplistic yet scriptural and spiritual difference between Son of God and Son of Man is… scholars at least agreed the phrases are not interchangeable. 'Son of Man': “a Human, what I call Myself” which is true, what Jesus refers to Himself as. Jesus recognized His humanness. In the New Testament, the phrase is found over 80 times. Here is just a sampling of those verses, usually when Jesus is referring to himself.

body of christ church every1one.org 6 Matthew 8:20: Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”

Matthew 12:40: For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Matthew 20:28: Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

Mark 8:31: He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and afer three days rise again

Jesus ofen called himself the Son of Man as part of his interactions with people. On the one hand, saying he was the Son of Man would have been a very ordinary thing to say. Like it’s use in Ezekiel, ‘son of man’ can simply mean, ‘human being.’ But of course, Jesus also was speaking to his identity as the Messiah.

He was alluding to Daniel 7, claiming his Messiahship and his role in the redemption of the world. Jesus’ humanity mattered. Jesus was conceived by the Spirit and full of the Spirit of God, but he was birthed by Mary and born as a man. His ability to sympathize in all of our weaknesses (Hebrews 4:15) and not sin (2 Corinthians 5:21), means he was and is the only one who could redeem us.

Similarly, his sonship can teach us a lot about himself. In Matthew 3:17 we read, “And a voice from Heaven said, ‘This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy.’”

Sons were viewed in this time as being chosen, prepared with purpose, and to carry on the vision of the father. This helps shape the significance of Jesus being called the Son of Man.

As you’ll notice in many of these references, Jesus use of the Son of Man is used in conjunction with his prophetic words about his own suffering. He deeply related to the suffering of his fellow humans. Jesus was also a humble man.

SON of DAVID

Don Stewart :: Why Was Jesus Called the Son of David?

God had promised David, the first rightful king of Israel, that his throne would be established forever. When your days are over and you rest with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, who will come from your own body, and I will establish his kingdom. He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever (2 Samuel 7:12-13).

This caused the people to long to see David's greater son - the one who would rule forever.

body of christ church every1one.org 7 Jesus Is The Son Of David On a number of occasions in the gospels Jesus is called the, "Son of David." Matthew calls Jesus the, son of David in the very first sentence of his gospel. A record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ the son of David, the son of Abraham (Matthew 1:1).

People Called Jesus The Son Of David Six times in the gospel of Matthew it records people calling Jesus the, "Son of David." There were two blind men who needed healing who addressed him this way. As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed him, crying out, "Have mercy on us, Son of David!" (Matthew 9:27). Afer Jesus performed a miraculous healing the crowd wondered if Jesus could be David's son. All the crowds were amazed, and were saying, "This man cannot be the Son of David, can he?" (Matthew 12:23). A Canaanite woman who wanted her daughter healed used this title of Jesus. And a Canaanite woman from that region came out and began to cry out, saying, "Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David; my daughter is cruelly demon-possessed" (Matthew 15:22). In Jericho, two blind men called out to Jesus. And two blind men sitting by the road, hearing that Jesus was passing by, cried out, "Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!" (Matthew 20:30). Jesus Was Called The Son Of David During The Triumphal Entry When Jesus entered Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, the people acknowledged Him as the "Son of David." The crowds going ahead of him, and those who followed, were shouting, "Hosanna to the Son of David; Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest!" (Matthew 21:9). In the temple in Jerusalem the people addressed Jesus as David's son. But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonderful things that he had done, and the children who were shouting in the temple, "Hosanna to the Son of David," they became indignant (Matthew 21:5). Jesus Was Born In Bethlehem - The City Of David Jesus was born in David's city - Bethlehem. Now afer Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, "Where is he who has been born King of the Jews? For we saw his star in the east and have come to worship him" (Matthew 2:1,2). He Had A Messianic Title The Son of David was, therefore, a messianic title. Jesus called this to the attention of the religious rulers. "What do you think about the Christ Whose son is he?" "The son of David," they replied. He said to them, "How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls him Lord? For he says, "The Lord said to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet." If then David calls him 'Lord,' how can he be his son?" No one could say a word in reply, and from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions (Matthew 22:42-46).

Summary David was promised that one of his offspring would rule forever. Jesus was called the "Son of David" while he was here on the earth. He was born in David's city, Bethlehem. The gospel of Matthew records that various people, on six different occasions, acknowledged Jesus as the Son of David. This is a messianic title. Jesus never denied that he was the Son of David.. In fact, on Palm Sunday he received the praise and worship of the people.
