From Hardship to Hope… __Kids Health Fund

FROM HARDSHIP TO HOPE – HELP FOR KIDS AND THEIR FAMILIES

By Virginia Winder

People will be dancing over a new fund to support families with children and young people. From Hardship to Hope is a campaign to raise money for a fund to support kids and their families in urgent need during acute hospital stays, says Taranaki Health Foundation general manager Bry Kopu.

“Hospital staff work closely with families whose lives are impacted by the complex medical journeys they often find themselves on,” Bry says.

“Access to good information and support systems is a priority for family health and well-being. Financial hardship can become a reality very quickly for those living week to week with little or no contingency. Up till now there has been no discretionary funding to support those families in urgent need.”

Bry says there is a genuine need for an emergency fund for kids, so the foundation together with the Taranaki District Health Board will make this a reality. Because of the size of Taranaki, often people have to travel long distances to visit loved ones and often there are siblings at home and, therefore, increased child care.

A hospital social worker’s assessment will be done when people require support and if it is appropriate the kids health fund will supply vouchers for meals, groceries and petrol.

As part of the fundraising, Mediaworks Foundation are raising awareness about children’s hardship in Taranaki through an initiative called Dance Like No Other. Eight charities have been chosen to take part in a dance-off gala evening on November 12.

Dancer and ambassador for From Hardship to Hope is Cat Glass, a New Plymouth early childhood teacher who appeared on reality renovation show, The Block. Cat and partner Jeremy Hill won the People’s Choice Award on the popular TV programme.
