The deportation journey was an integral aspect of the Nazis’ Final Solution and the cause of insufferable torment to Jewish deportees. While on the trains, Jews endured an onslaught of physical and psychological misery. Though most Jews were immediately killed upon arriving at the death camps, a small number were chosen to work, and an even smaller number survived through liberation. The basis of this study comes from the testimonies of those who survived, specifically in regard to their recorded experiences and memories of the deportation journey. This study first provides a brief account of how the Nazi regime moved from methods of emigration and ghettoization to systematic deportation and genocide. Then, the deportation journey will be studied in detail, focusing on three major themes of survivor testimony: the physical conditions, the psychological turmoil, and the chaos of arrival. -

20 years of German rail reform and Deutsche Bahn AG Achievements and challenges 20 years of German rail reform and Deutsche Bahn AG Achievements and challenges Andreas Schwilling, Dr. Stephan Bunge, Roland Berger Strategy Consultants The year 20 4 will be the twentieth anniversary of the German rail reform and the foundation of Deutsche Bahn AG. Deutsche Bahn AG took this opportunity to commission Roland Berger Strategy Consultants with a study on the development of the German railmarket. Summary In 993, several factors increased pressure on politicians to act and reach a cross- party consensus on the introduction of a rail reform. From 950 to 990, Deutsche Bundesbahn's share in the intermodal market had decreased markedly, from 3,- to .- in passenger transport and from 5.- to 2 - in freight transport. /ith the opening up of the borders Deutsche Reichsbahn0s rail traffic volumes began to drop drastically, too. The earnings situation of both Bundesbahn and Reichsbahn was desperate. According to the Bundesbahn government commission, the public financing re1uirement for the two railways would have increased from D2 2, billion in 99 to D2 .4 billion in 2000, presenting a huge budget risk. Attempts at introducing a rail reform up to this point had achieved very little success. Both railways were paralysed by influence e3erted in the political arena and by the principles of budget law, civil service law and public service law. In the course of reunification, the Bundesbahn and the Reichsbahn had to be merged. The 4nification Treaty provided for a ma5ority of the Reichbahn's workforce being granted civil service status by 6anuary 994, which increased the time pressure. -
