Ny Traffic a Serious Kentucky Derby Contender

July 19th, 2020 By Dick Jerardi

The two horses that had been acquired for a combined $47,000 in 2019 raced 5 hours apart at Parx last September 21.

It was Pennsylvania Derby Day. Ny Traffic, making the first start of his career, was 47-1 in Race 2. Math Wizard was 31-1 in Race 11, the Pa. Derby.

Fast forward 10 months. After finishing third in that debut, Ny Traffic is now a serious Kentucky Derby contender. Math Wizard, of course, won that Pennsylvania Derby and appears to be back to his very best form.

Last Saturday at Monmouth Park, the horses raced just one hour apart _ Math Wizard finishing second in the Monmouth Cup and Ny Traffic, making an incredible run in the final 100 yards of the Haskell, beaten just a nose by 3-5 frontrunner Authentic.

It was Parx owner John Fanelli who claimed Math Wizard for $25,000 on Jan. 31, 2019 and then went partners on Ny Traffic in a private sale after the colt did not meet his reserve at the May 2019 Timonium sale. The partners bought the New York bred for $22,000.

Math Wizard has won $1,102,740. Ny Traffic has won $565,470.

No More Tattoos

Horse Identity established through the TRPB Digital Tattoo Effective January 1, 2020, any Thoroughbred that has not been previously lip tattooed and is making its first lifetime start in a recognized pari-mutuel race, must have the TRPB Digital Tattoo in order to be correctly identified in the paddock and permitted to race. The transition to the TRPB Digital Tattoo follows the recent requirement by The Jockey Club for a horse to be microchipped as part of the registration process. All foals from 2017 onward have a listed microchip on their Jockey Club papers. The Association of Racing Commissioners International (ARCI) passed a model rule regarding Digital Tattoos. The model rule states, effective January 1, 2020, the racing secretary shall ensure that the registration certificates for all Thoroughbred horses that were foaled in 2018 or thereafter have a Digital Tattoo prior to entry in a race. In essence, the Digital Tattoo is an electronic validation of the identity of a horse performed by a trained TRPB technician. The technician will use a scanner to read the horse's microchip and the microchip number will hyperlink to electronic registration information. After fully examining the markings and foal photos contained in the horse's electronic record, the technician will confirm the identity of the horse standing in front of him or her and upload a selection of digital pictures documenting the horse's markings to The Jockey Club's database. The TRPB technician will then place a digital stamp on the electronic certificate of registration. This Digital Tattoo will indicate that the TRPB has verified the identity of the horse and uploaded updated digital photographs to the breed registry's database. For additional information regarding the Digital Tattoo, please click here for FAQ's or contact TRPB at [email protected].

Digital Foal Certificates for 2018 and on foals need to be attached to the owner's user account and transferred each time the horse races at a different track. To learn how to do this, go to The Jockey Club Digital Certificate Management Video and watch the tutorial. Bear with us as everyone navigates the new system.

Share Commingled pari-mutuel handle on United States Thoroughbred races totaled $998.44 million, up 0.76% from June 2019 despite almost 1,500 fewer races year over year, according to the latest Thoroughbred Racing Economic Indicators released by Equibase July 6. The number races came in at 10,906, a drop of 37.53% from January through June 2029. The June figures are tied to multiple racetrack re-openings after widespread COVID-19 shutdowns. 24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. - Matthew 7:24-27 (ESV)

I hate storms. There is a story of Jesus sleeping through a storm. He and the disciples were on a boat and it was a very bad storm. Jesus was sleeping in the midst of it! The disciples woke him up just to ask him if he cared about them. Jesus got up and “calmed the storm.” Immediately the wind and waves calmed – even the waves settled down immediately! The disciples were then, suddenly afraid of Jesus because of the power that he so truly and awesomely demonstrated. I remember when I was a kid and there was a hurricane that was coming. It was going to hit us one night. The winds were already blowing, and it was getting close. At some point I fell asleep and slept all night. I woke up in the morning and there were branches and even some trees that had fallen down, but I slept right through the storm. I remember that I even slept well and woke up rested. The faith of a child. Storms will come. We can be sure that there will be storms this side of heaven. Jesus says that storms will come even after we become his disciple and apply his powerful principles to our life in all our affairs. But, did you notice that the passage above says, if we follow these teachings the storms will not destroy us. We will be empowered to bear up. We will get through. Surely in the midst of storms and trials the howling winds and rattling of objects will be disconcerting – but remember the promise - we will get through. That is a great promise – from God who keeps His promises. We are certainly in a storm now, it’s called covid. I think we are coming out of it, although there will be another spike of two, historically at each stage of lightening of restrictions. And, yet the old saying is, we are always either going into a storm, in a storm, or coming out of a storm. Storms are a part of life this side of heaven. They are destructive and distressing. Know that you can make it through any and all storms with the help and strength of God. Is that Pollyannaish? I would say yes, except for the fact that the promise of Holy Writ is that we will get through, and even those storms that seem to have destroyed us in the eyes of men, are full of hope – even life forevermore, Amen!

Jeremiah 17:7-8 (NIV) 7 "But blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him. 8 He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit."
