Trying to locate and then develop a top trotter can become a series of rollercoaster rides. The euphoria that comes from landing a top prospect at the sale can be followed with months of training that can reinforce that original opinion. When the calendar turns into May and June, a new ride begins as horses get sorted out and the direc- tion of the coaster tilts accordingly. For some the ride gets put on hold for another year when the inevitable kicks in, as injury and illness are factors that force trainers to re-think their positions and plan for another day. When the $270,000 Lexington purchase from 2019 named Balen- ciaga made his only start in July 2020 for trainer Paul Kelley it had arrived with the conditioner looking upward. A fifth-place finish with the horse 20 lengths off at the wire proved otherwise and months of planning turned into anguish. “He trained down like a good one,” said Kelley on Monday (4/26). “We discovered that he had developed a lung infection and decided to stop with him.” For Kelley, to put an end to what was expected to be a promising season was no surprise. Careers can be made and ruined at the same time and pushing a youngster, especially one with lung issues, is likely to kill potential. Instead, Kelley decided to pull the plug. He eventually gelded the son of Chapter Seven and elected to bring him back for a 3-year-old season. “It’s just great that I have owners that have patience,” said Kelley, who applauds co-owners S R F Stable (Lennart Agren) and Crawford Farms for seeing the bigger picture while still not giving up on the Paul Kelley Photo sport’s major prizes. By Ken Weingartner

Incommunicado exceeded expectations last season. On Saturday, he will try to meet them. Incommunicado is the 3-1 morning-line favorite in Saturday’s $115,583 Dexter Cup for 3-year-old male trotters at Freehold Raceway. The gelding heads to the race off a season-opening 1:57 win in last week’s single elimination and starts Saturday from post seven with Yannick Gingras driving for trainer Ake Svanstedt. Last year, Incommunicado won four of 10 races, hit the board a total of nine times, and earned $201,375 for owners Knutsson Trotting, Little E, Arthur Geiger, and David Stolz. Three of his victories came in the Massachusetts Sire Stakes, including the series final.
