Number : 40300114070 Department : English and Literature Department Faculty : Adab and Humanities Title : Adaptation of Novel into The Film Inferno 2016 Supervisor I : Dr. Rosmah Tami, S. Ag., M.Sc., MA. Supervisor II : Masykur Rauf, S. Hum., M., Pd. This research discussed about adaptation of novel into the film Inferno 2016. This research aimed to find out adaptation of novel into film that found what the differences are and adapter‘s motivation or reason in the changes of both works that related with the audiences‘ commentary. The research focused on what and why of four chapters in Linda Hutcheon theory about the differences and the motivation. Then, the data were analyzed using qualitative method. The researcher used note taking as the instrument to find out the valid data. This findings show that there were two different among the structural and mix of plays between novel and film, and the motivation or reason of adapter adapting the novel into the film. The researcher concluded that the differences in the structural and the mix play are character, plot and setting and three motivations or reasons of the adapter are the economy, the legal constrains, and the audience. Keywords: The Differences, the Audiences, the Adapter, Adaptation Theory by Linda Huctheon, Novel, Script, Film, Trailer. xi CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION There are five parts of this chapter; background, research questions, objectives of the research, significance of the research and scope of the research. A. Background Term of adaptation can be used to see forms and process of one literary work to another such as novel transformed into film and focused the process of both. Novels and films are not only as medium to analysis in adaptation theory but also poems, plays, and another kind of literary work. Hutcheon (2006: XI) said that, the stories of poems, novels, plays, operas, paintings, songs, dances, and tableaux vivants were constantly being adapted from one medium to another and then back again. Thus, adaptation is one of some theories to analysis literary works that not only focus in one or more product of literary works but also to found the motivation as the aspect from adapter‘s motivation. Adaptation of novel into film is generally to find variety of new forms in literature that has some steps of process. The film as the result of process and has the difference from novel because the movement will make a change. Someone cannot judge by the cover of the film before know what happened in novel. In addition, Holland (2002: 2) stated that, novels are an older form, and as such, the authority 1 2 behind the book has been stronger. So, medium of novel differs from film but their central point of the story almost same. There are two ways in adaptation; as a product and as a process which the author creates a product after passing through a process. Kinney (2013: 8) said that, as a product, adaptation cannot remain entirely faithful to its original text, otherwise questions of plagiarism arise; adaptation must differ enough from the original text while still maintaining the source‘s fundamental ideas. Adaptation as a process becomes an act of appropriating and salvaging while trying to give new meaning to a text. It is clearly stated before, filmmaking as a process by adapter who makes the change. It means that there are motivations or reasons by adapter who give new meaning to the original text. Literary works show picture life of society and can give a meaning to reader (Setiawan, 2015: 1). Therefore, literature is the mirror of social life that has element and media. Elements can be like culture,

    Movie Review: ‘Inferno’ By John Mulderig Catholic News Service NEW YORK – While not exactly hellish, “Inferno” (Columbia), director Ron Howard’s screen version of Dan Brown’s 2013 novel, does produce some of the purgatorial tedium of sitting around in a dentist’s waiting room or standing at a bus stop. On the up side, Catholic viewers will be glad to note that neither their faith nor the early history of their church is trampled on, as they both were so blatantly in Brown’s best-known work, “The Da Vinci Code.” In fact, aside from a few scenes set in such famous locales as St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice and the baptistery of Florence’s cathedral, the church is entirely absent as “symbology” professor Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) embarks on another of his globetrotting cultural scavenger hunts. The chase begins in confusion: Langdon wakes up in an Italian hospital afflicted with amnesia only to find himself, mere moments later, being shot at by an assassin (Ana Ularu) disguised as a police officer. He escapes, thanks in large measure to the help of British-bred emergency room physician Sienna Brooks (Felicity Jones). An intellectual prodigy, Dr. Brooks has been a fan of Langdon’s books since childhood. This paper examines whether there is a preference for a specific global trans- lation strategy due to a readership that is specialized in terms of education level. Adopting Venuti’s (1995/2008) division of global translation strategies into exoticizing and domesticating translation, it examines the frequency of local translation strate- gies, which are part of a global translation strategy, used in translating English-Thai religious markers in Dan Brown’s Angels and Demons, The Da Vinci Code, The Lost Sym- bol, Inferno and Origin. The religious markers cover words/phrases of belief systems in either Eastern or Western culture. The results show that exoticizing translation is a dominant global translation strategy that translation agents, such as translators and editors, use in literary translations of Anglo-American novels.
