The current paper presents an initial analysis of the higher-level disaggregation using the Handbook of the Birds of the World/BirdLife International Illustrated Checklist of the Birds of the World Volumes 1 and 2 taxonomy, and identifies the challenges in completing the analysis to identify all of the migratory species and the corresponding Range States. The document has been prepared by the COP Appointed Scientific Councilors for Birds. SOUTH KOREA 22 October – 3 November, 2018 Sandy Darling, Jeni Darling, Tom Thomas Most tours to South Korea occur in May for the spring migration or in late fall or winter for northern birds that winter in South Korea. This trip was timed in late October and early November to try see both summer residents and winter arrivals, and was successful in doing so. Birds were much shyer than in North America and often were visible only briefly, so that, for example, we saw few thrushes although they could be heard. This report has been written by Sandy and includes photos from both Tom (TT) and Sandy (SD). Sandy saw 166 species adequately of which 57 were life birds. When one includes birds heard, seen by the leader or others, or not seen well enough to count (BVD), the total was about 184. From trip reports it was clear that the person to lead the tour was Dr Nial Moores, Director of Birds Korea, an NGO working to improve the environment, especially for birds, in Korea. Nial has twenty years of experience in Korea, knows where birds are, and has ears and eyes that are exceptional. He planned the trip, made all the arrangements, found birds that we would not have found on our own and was our interface with Koreans, few of whom speak English. Nial also had to rejig the itinerary when strong winds led to the cancellation of a ferry to Baekryeong Island. We drove the vehicles - confidence was needed in dealing with city traffic, which was as aggressive as other trip reports said! Some of the highlights of the trip were: About 40,000 massed shore birds on Yubu Island, including the rare Spoonbill Sandpiper, a life bird for Tom. -

Local scale movement behavior is an important basis to predict large-scale bird movements in heterogeneous landscapes. Here we conducted playback experiments using mobbing calls to estimate the probability that forest birds would cross a 50-m urban area during three seasons (breeding, dispersal, and wintering seasons) with varying amounts of tree cover, building area, and electric wire density. We examined the responses of four forest resident species: Marsh Tit (Poecile palustris), Varied Tit (Sittiparus varius), Japanese Tit (P. minor), and Eurasian Nuthatch (Sitta europaea) in central Hokkaido, northern Japan. We carried out and analyzed 250 playback experiments that attracted 618 individuals. Our results showed that tree cover increased the crossing probability of three species other than Varied Tit. Building area and electric wire density had no detectable effect on crossing probability for four species. -

Breeding Biology of an Endemic Bornean Turdid, the Fruithunter (Chlamydochaera Jefferyi), and Life History Comparisons with Turdus Species of the World

MITCHELL,1,4 FRED TUH,2 AND THOMAS E. MARTIN3 ABSTRACT.—We present the first description of the breeding biology for the Fruithunter (Chlamydochaera jefferyi), a member of the cosmopolitan family Turdidae, and a montane endemic to the tropical Asian island of Borneo. We also compile breeding biology traits from the literature to make comparisons between the Fruithunter and the thrush genus Turdus. Our comparisons indicate that Fruithunters exhibit a slower life history strategy than both tropical and north temperate Turdus. We located and monitored 42 nests in 7 years in Kinabalu Park, Sabah, Malaysia. The mean clutch size was 1.89 6 0.08 eggs, and the modal clutch size was 2 eggs. Mean fresh egg mass was 6.15 6 0.13 g, representing 9.5% of adult female body mass. Average lengths of incubation and nestling periods were 14.56 6 0.24 and 17.83 6 0.31 days respectively. Only the female incubated and brooded the eggs and nestlings, but both the male and female fed nestlings. Female attentiveness during incubation was high throughout, reaching an asymptote around 85% with average on-bouts of 39.0 6 2.5 mins. The daily nest survival probability was 0.951 6 0.025, and the daily predation rate was 0.045 6 0.024. Female feeding rate increased as brooding effort decreased, suggesting that female feeding rate may be constrained by the need to provide heat while nestlings are unable to thermoregulate. -

However it is also one of the most poorly understood migration systems and 6 little is known about the populations and ecology of the passerine migrants that breed, stopover and 7 winter in the habitats along this flyway. We provide the first flyway-wide review of diversity, 8 ecology, and conservation issues relating to 170 species of long-distance and over 80 short-distance 9 migrants from 32 families. Recent studies of songbird migration movements and ecology is limited, 10 and is skewed towards East Asia, particularly China, Taiwan, Russia, Japan and South Korea. Strong 11 evidence of declines exists for some like Yellow-breasted Bunting (Emberiza aureola), but tends to be 12 fragmentary, localised or anecdotal for many others. More species have small breeding ranges 13 (<250,000km2) and/or are dependent on tropical forests as wintering habitat than any other Eurasian 14 migratory system, and are thus more vulnerable to habitat loss and degradation throughout their 15 ranges. -
