1) WIPO Fund for Indigenous and Local Community Participation

The General Assembly of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has established a Voluntary Fund for Indigenous and Local Communities. This Fund directly supports the participation of representatives of these communities in the work of the Intergovernmental Committee on Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge and Folklore (IGC) of WIPO.

Beneficiaries from the fund are members of indigenous or local communities, or other representatives of customary holders or custodians of traditional knowledge or traditional cultural expressions. They are to be selected from already accredited IGC observers by an Advisory Board appointed from WIPO member states and indigenous observers. The Voluntary Fund is devoted entirely to funding their travel and living expenses to enable them to take part in the sessions of the IGC held in Geneva and other related activities. A fast-track procedure has been also set up to accredit WIPO observers. Funding applications for the next session of the IGC must be received by the WIPO Secretariat 60 days before the commencement of their previous session, which is due to take place in June or July 2007.

2) BP Conservation Program Invites Applications for Future Conservationist Awards

The BP Conservation Program is offering Future Conservationist Awards of up to $12,500 each to teams of young conservationists who aim to develop their skills through practical conservation projects. These awards are highly competitive and winners are selected from among the highest - quality applications. BP will make $250,000 worth of funding available for winning projects.

To be eligible for a Future Conservationist Award, the proposed project must meet each of the criteria outlined below. The project must be at least three months but no more than one year in length; take place in one of the following countries - Algeria, Angola, Argentina, Azerbaijan, Bolivia, Brazil, China, Colombia, Egypt, Georgia, India, Indonesia, Libya, Malaysia, Mexico, Pakistan, Russia, Trinidad & Tobago, Turkey, or Venezuela; address a recognized global biodiversity conservation priority at the species or site level; offer educational benefits to local stakeholders; have a minimum of three people on the team; be led by a student national of the country where the project takes place (co-leadership is acceptable where appropriate); have students comprising 50 percent or more of the team; have locals from the project area comprising 50 percent or more of the team; and have the award cover 50 percent or more of the project's total budget. 3) IDRC Evaluation Research Awards

The International Development Research Centre (IDRC) Evaluation Research Awards will assist Canadian and developing country graduate students in undertaking their thesis research in the field of evaluation. The awards are intended to promote the growth of Canadian and developing country capacity in evaluation and to better the theory and practice of evaluation. Research has to be conducted in Latin America, Africa, the Middle East or Asia. For 2007, two awards will be offered. Deadline for applications is 15 January, 2007.

4) Call for Small Grant Fund project proposals for the 2007 cycle - the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands

The call for proposals is now being made for the 2007 cycle, with a deadline of 30 June 2007 for application and with a decision by the Standing Committee around end of the year. The current edition of the "Small Grants Fund (SGF) Operational Guidelines", which includes complete information and the required forms, is now available on the Ramsar Web site in Word and PDF formats, as well as directly from the Secretariat. The Secretariat's regional teams also offer an advisory service to help with the preparation of suitable proposals, for which drafts should be submitted to the Senior Regional Advisors by 15 April 2007. Eligibility is restricted to countries on the List of Aid Recipients established by the Development Assistance Committee (DAC) of the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), effectively meaning developing countries and countries with economies in transition. Projects may be proposed and implemented by any agency, NGO, or individual.

Readers can also find lists of the successful project proposals for each year since 1992 and news reports of successfully completed projects, which may provide useful tips as to the kinds of projects and approaches most often selected for assistance, on the Ramsar’s Web site.

5) Royal Society Short Visit Programme

The International Short Visit scheme aims to support new and on-going international collaborations by providing grants to cover mobility costs. Visits can be in or out of the United Kingdom and be between one and twelve weeks.

The key objectives of the scheme are to initiate one to one collaborations, explore opportunities to build lasting networks and gain access to complementary equipment, data observations and ideas.

United Kindgom host and visiting scientist must have established contact before submitting and application, either though previous collaboration or correspondence. I an all cases the application must be submitted by the UK-based scientist.

From 2006 the Royal Society will be able to cover international airfare of visitors from sub-Saharan Africa. Closing date for application is 1 December 2006.

6) Grant Solicitation for Activities to Advance Methane Recovery and Use as a Clean Energy Source

The Environmental Protection Agency is requesting proposals to fund projects and activities that support the Methane to Markets Partnership. The partnership is an international initiative to reduce global methane emissions by promoting methane capture-and-use projects in four major sectors including agriculture (animal waste management), coal mining, landfills, and oil and gas systems.

EPA expects to award up to 20 cooperative agreements through this announcement, ranging from $25,000 to $300,000 per award, for a total of $2.5 million. EPA is requesting proposals for projects that support the partnership broadly, but that may include the following types of activities: directly identify, characterize, or implement methane capture-and-use projects – including technology transfer, feasibility and pre-feasibility studies, training and capacity building, or database development for potential sites.

EPA seeks proposals from international governments, as well as public or private non-profit organizations. The estimated project period for awards is May 2007 through May 2009. Proposals are due by Dec. 4, 2006 at 4 p.m. Washington, D.C., time.

7) Fund for Wild Nature Accepting Applications

The Fund for Wild Nature provides money for campaigns to save and restore native species and wild ecosystems, including actions to defend wilderness and biological diversity.

The fund supports advocacy, litigation, public policy work, development of citizen science, and similar endeavours. The fund does not support basic scientific research, private land acquisition, individual action or study, or conferences. The fund will only support media projects that have a clear strategic value and a concrete plan for dissemination of the final product. The fund supports bio centric goals that are premised on effective and intelligible strategies, with special attention to ecological issues not currently receiving sufficient public attention and funding. The fund seeks proposals with visionary yet realistic goals to create tangible change. All proposals must be highly cost effective.

The fund rarely supports proposals from organizations with annual budgets greater than $250,000, and only supports projects in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. No individual or organization may receive more than one grant per calendar year.

8) No-profit supply of computers to Developing Countries

Computer Aid International has been providing PCs to more than 90 developing countries. Of those shipped many have gone to educational institutions and the remaining to community organisations working in fields as diverse as HIV/Aids, environment, human rights, and primary healthcare. Computer Aid International aims to: (i) Increase the number of refurbished computers being re-used overseas; (ii) increase the number of UK organisations donating their used IT equipment for re-use overseas; (iii) identify and work with those organisations in recipient countries able to derive maximum value from refurbished computers; (iv) provide training and work experience in computer repair to people from socially excluded communities.

9) Grants for developing a Community-based monitoring system for developing countries

The Poverty and Economic Policy (PEP) Research Network brings together and provides support to developing country researchers working to reduce poverty. The network receives funding from the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) as part of its Micro Impacts of Macroeconomics and Adjustment Policies (MIMAP) program. Specific objectives of PEP are to support: • Community-Based Monitoring Systems (CBMS) - designs and pilots community-based monitoring and local development systems aimed at poverty in its multidimensional sense. • Poverty Monitoring, Measurement and Analysis (PMMA) - aims to develop and apply analytical tools to monitor, measure and understand poverty, and to analyze a wide range of poverty issues. • Modeling and Policy Impact Analysis (MPIA) - uses economy-wide models as a "laboratory" to identify and analyze the links between specific policies and shocks and their eventual impacts on poverty.

CBMS Network Research Grants are given to proponent institutions from developing countries, except for countries where CBMS is currently being implemented i.e. Bangladesh, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Laos, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Senegal, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam, for the development and institutionalization of a community-based monitoring system in their own countries. Each grant amounting to a maximum of US$ 50,000 is intended to cover the design and the pilot of the CBMS in the respective countries. Aside from the financial support, grantees are given opportunities to participate in the annual CBMS and PEP network training workshops and conferences and are also given access to the CBMS network database as well as technical support from the network’s pool of technical advisors. Institutions who intend to avail of the grant should submit a research proposal to the CBMS Network Coordinating Team for initial screening. CBMS network proposals are categorized into two: (1) development and pilot-test of a CBMS, and (2) expansion and institutionalization of a CBMS

10) Peter Fleming Award

Royal Geographical Society provides funding for geographical research, fieldwork and teaching. The society’s grants are wide-ranging and offer support to desk and field-based researchers, research teams and school teachers. The society provides a single grant of £9,000 for senior researchers for the advancement of geographical science. This award is provided in memory of the late Peter Fleming for the funding of Geographical research, including fieldwork, lab based and desk based research. The applicants should be British and can be either an individual or part of a collaborative project. Deadline for application is mid-March 2007.

11) Development Marketplace - Call for Proposals 2007

The Development Marketplace complements the World Bank's work by giving grassroots ideas a chance to solve local problems. The programme is now accepting proposals until November 17, 2006 and should address one of the following categories: Service delivery, Natural resources, Environment and Health. 12) Towards Realizing the Health MDGs in Africa and Asia - Call for Proposals

Global Development Network (GDN) announces the launch of its fifth Global Research Project “Promoting Innovative Programs from the Developing World: Towards Realizing the Health Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in Africa and Asia”. Submissions are invited from researchers, NGOs, private sector organizations or governments, from and/or operating in developing and transition countries. The USD 5.9 millions project involves conducting extensive impact evaluations and cost-effectiveness analyses of both about-to-be-launched and ongoing health and health-related programs from the developing and transition world.

The goals of the project are to conduct extensive impact evaluations of previously unrecognized interventions from the developing and transition world with the greatest potential for replication and contributing to the achievement of the three Millennium Development Goals - MDGs (reducing child mortality, improving maternal health and, combating HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases). Who can apply: Researchers can apply as independent evaluators of programs; managers of NGO programs, private sector managed development programs and government programs can submit applications for high-quality evaluations of projects they implement in health and related fields. 13) Global Environmental Prize

The University of St Andrews and Conoco-Phillips have announced the call for entries for the ninth international St Andrews Prize for the Environment. Applications are invited from individuals, multi- disciplinary teams or community groups for the 2007 annual prize of 50,000 USD for the winner and 10,000 USD for each of the two runners-up.

The primary objective of the prize is to find innovative solutions to environmental problems. The solutions should be practical, combining good science, economic reality and political acceptability. The prize offers people from all backgrounds around the world the chance to help transform their environmental ideas into reality and also provides a network of connections and support. So far, the prize has attracted entries from more than 50 countries each year on topics as diverse as sustainable development in the Amazon rainforest, urban re-generation, recycling, health and water issues, and .

14) The Ashden Awards for Sustainable Energy

The Ashden Awards for Sustainable Energy are seeking entries from inspirational and innovative local sustainable energy projects from Asia, Africa and Latin America. There are five international awards in total, each with a first prize of £30,000 and a second prize of £10,000. Prizes will be awarded for schemes which address the following areas: food security, health and welfare, light, and education and enterprise. One of the prizes will be a special Africa award in recognition of the combined challenges of climate change and poverty facing the region and the vital contribution which local renewable energy can make in tackling both. Ashden will reward existing achievements and provide funding for future expansion. Award-winning schemes must have been operational for at least one year and must still be active. Successful schemes will be highly replicable to ensure maximum impact in the battle against climate change.

Award winners will be promoted to the media, practitioners and experts in the field as leading examples of sustainable energy in action at the local level. Closing Date for application is 14 November 2006.

15) Captain Planet Foundation Offers Funding for Youth Environmental Projects

The mission of the Captain Planet Foundation is to fund and support hands-on environmental projects for children and youth. The foundation's objective is to encourage innovative programs that empower children and youth around the world to work individually and collectively to solve environmental problems in their neighbourhoods and communities. Through environmental education, the foundation believes that children can achieve a better understanding and appreciation of the world in which they live. The foundation offers small grants of $500 or less each, as well as a limited number of grant awards ranging from $500 to $2,500 each. Applicants must be at least 18 years old to submit a proposal.

The next deadline for submitting grant applications is December 31 2006. Please note that, grant proposals are reviewed over a period of three months from the date of the submission deadline.

16) Stockholm Challenge Awards 2008

The Stockholm Challenge Award invites excellent ICT projects in six categories (public administration, culture, health, education, economic development, and environment) from all over the world to compete for the prestigious challenge trophies. The challenge is searching for the best initiatives that accelerate the use of information technology for the social and economic benefit of citizens and communities. The Awards will be open for entries from January 1st, 2007 and closes on December 31, 2007.

17) IIASA Young Scientists' Summer Program 2007

The Young Scientists' Summer Program of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis provides funding for pre-doctoral research at the institute. IIASA’s annual 3-month Young Scientists Summer Program (YSSP) offers research opportunities to talented young researchers whose interests correspond with IIASA’s ongoing research on issues of global environmental, economic and social change.

To provide opportunities for second or third year pre-doctoral students to undertake research in a field of study that corresponds with the institute's areas of research and interest. Fields of study include: Ecologically sustainable development of the biosphere; acid rain; large International Rivers Project; population analysis; applications of heterogeneity dynamics; system and decision sciences; advanced computer science; technology, the economy, and society; and processes of international negotiations. Candidates must be pre-doctoral candidates in their second or third year of research. Application for the 2007 YSSP will be accepted until 15 January 2007.

18) UNESCO / Keizo Obuchi Fellowships

UNESCO invites young postgraduate researchers in developing countries with a master's degree (or equivalent) to apply for fellowships, each worth US$6,000 to US$10,000, through the UNESCO / Keizo Obuchi Research Fellowship Programme. The program offers a total of 20 fellowships to researchers active in one of four fields: the environment, inter-cultural dialogue, information and communication technology, and peaceful conflict resolution. This is the seventh year running that Japan has awarded these grants. Applications must reach UNESCO Headquarters in Paris before 12 January 2007. Researchers under 40 years of age may submit their applications to their country's National Commission for UNESCO (check with your UNESCO's country office), which will select a maximum of two candidates.

19) IDB Scholarship Program for Government Officials in Latin America and the Caribbean

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) is calling for candidates to apply for its scholarship program for mid-level government officials in Latin America and the Caribbean to obtain master's degrees at five universities in the region. Candidates must be citizens of an IDB borrowing member country under 45 years of age and have a university degree with an excellent academic record. Scholarship recipients will study in another country than the one they work in, in order to gain experience and knowledge that will help promote regional integration and a more international outlook, in addition to the opportunity to receive technical training.

The following master's degree programs have been approved for this scholarship: Maestría en Política y Gestión de la Ciencia y la Tecnología, from Universidad de Buenos Aires, Argentina; Mestrado em Política Científica e Tecnológica , from Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Brazil; Maestría en Tecnologías de Información y Administración , from Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo, Mexico; Magister en Asentamientos Humanos y Medio Ambiente , from Pontificia Universidad Católica, Chile; and Maestría en Socioeconomía Ambiental , from Centro Agronómico Tropical de Investigación y Enseñanza, Costa Rica.

20) Internship Programme for Young Women 2007

The Eastern African Sub-regional Support Initiative for the Advancement of women (EASSI) was formed in 1996 as a post-Beijing support mechanism for Eastern Africa covering the countries of Burundi, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, Tanzania and Uganda. EASSI is specifically seeking four young women aged 20-30 years from Burundi, Ethiopia, Rwanda and Uganda to join the 2007 Internship Programme. The internship Programme is an innovative and exciting Programme for young women from the Eastern Africa sub-region held every year from April to December. The Programme provides opportunities for learning, interacting and travelling. Its objective is to develop and enhance young women's skills in leadership, lobbying and advocacy, programme management, report writing and analysis, research and documentation, information management, developing resourceful data bases, Web site maintenance and resource centre management. At the end of the internship programme, each intern is expected to produce a research report on an area of their choice but related to the work that EASSI does, based on their experience at EASSI. 21) Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Research Fellowships

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation awards Humboldt Research Fellowships to highly qualified scholars and scientists who hold a Ph.D. and are under 40 years of age. The program enables them to carry out research projects of their own in Germany for periods ranging from 6 to 12 months. Scholars from all academic disciplines may apply. There are no quotas in respect of either country or academic discipline. Approximately 500 research fellowships are available per annum. These stipends represent an attractive opportunity for faculty to spend, for example, a sabbatical in Germany. Applications may be submitted at any time, but should be received at the Foundation in Bonn at least 5 months prior to the meeting at which they are reviewed. The committee meets in March, June/July, and November every year to select winners.

23) Environmental Fellows Program at Harvard University

The Harvard University Center for the Environment created the Environmental Fellows program to enable recent doctorate recipients to use and expand Harvard's extraordinary resources to tackle complex environmental problems. The Harvard University Center for the Environment will name six new Environmental Fellows in March 2007. The Environmental Fellows will work for two years. Their two-year post-doctoral program will start in September 2007. The fellows will join a group of remarkable scholars who will be beginning the second year of their fellowships.

Together, the Environmental Fellows at Harvard will form a community of researchers with diverse backgrounds united by intellectual curiosity, top-quality scholarship, and a drive to understand some of the most important environmental challenges facing society. 24) WWF’s Kathryn Fuller Fellowships 2007-2008

World Wildlife Fund is announcing the opening of its 2007-2008 Kathryn Fuller Fellowship competition. Two post-doctoral fellowships will be awarded for a two year period to individuals with outstanding research proposals that are of fundamental and immediate importance to global biodiversity conservation. Fuller Fellows can be based at any institution, including at World Wildlife Fund, and will co-advised by one academic and one WWF mentor. Fellows are provided a stipend of $50,000 per year, as well as a $15,000 annual research allowance.

Applicants should have received a doctorate degree between January 2002 and January 2007. The deadline for applications is November 15, 2006. Offers will be made in the spring of 2007, with fellowships to begin in the fall of 2007.

25) Borlaug Leadership Awards

The Borlaug Leadership Enhancement in Agriculture Program (LEAP) awards up to $20,000 to outstanding MS or PhD students (enrolled in either U.S. or home country universities) from USAID- assisted countries in sub-Saharan Africa. The awards support internships/thesis research of up to 12 months at a CGIAR international agriculture research center and also need to link a U.S. university mentor with a scientist at a CG Centre. Awards is made on a competitive basis to students who show strong scientific and leadership potential, have a well coordinated proposal between their home university, a US university mentor, and the CGIAR mentor, and whose research is related to a strong research and support project within the host country. Emphasis is placed on work that has relevance to the national development of the student's home country. The geographic focus region for the current Request for Applications (RFA) is sub-Saharan Africa.

26) American Association of University Women - International Fellowships

American Association of University Women (AAUW) provides an award of one year of support to women of outstanding academic ability, who are not citizens or permanent residents of the United States, either to pursue graduate degree programs or to conduct postdoctoral research, in the United States. Women who are not citizens or permanent residents of the U.S. Applicants must have received an academic degree equivalent to a bachelor's degree from a U.S. institution, no later than the end of the month of the application deadline. Applicants must be proficient in the English language. Applicants must have applied to a graduate degree program at a U.S. institution. AAUW membership is not required. Applications deadline is 01 December 2006.

Workshop on “Climate Change in South-Eastern European Countries”: Causes, Impacts, and Solutions at Graz, Austria. From 19-20 March 2007.
