iii INTRODUCTION

The impact of the ante-bellum southern plantations on the lives of their black and white inhabitants, as well as on the political, economic, and cultural life of the South as a whole, is one of the most fascinating and controversial problems of present-day American historical research. Depending upon the labor of slaves who constituted the great majority of the American black population, the plantations were both homes and business enterprises for a white, southern elite. They were the largest, the most commercialized, and on the whole, the most efficient and specialized agricultural enterprises of their day, producing the bulk of the South’s staple crops of tobacco, cotton, sugar, rice, and hemp. Their proprietors were entrepreneurs who aspired to and sometimes, after a generation or two, achieved the status of a cultivated landed aristocracy. Many distinguished themselves not only in agriculture but in the professions, in the military, in government service, and in scientific and cultural endeavors. Planters ambitious to augment their wealth, together with their black slaves, were an important driving force in the economic and political development of new territories and states in the Southwest. Their commodities accounted for more than half the nation’s exports, and the plantations themselves were important markets for the products of northern industry. In short, they played a crucial role in the development of a national market economy. The plantations of the Old South, the white families who owned, operated, and lived on them, and the blacks who toiled on them as slaves for more than two centuries have been the subjects of numerous historical studies since the pioneering work of Ulrich B. Phillips in the early twentieth century. The literature, highly controversial, has focused on questions such as the evolution and nature of the planter class and its role in shaping the white South’s economy, culture, and values; the conditions experienced by American blacks in slavery; the impact of the “peculiar institution” on their personalities and the degree to which a distinct Afro-American culture developed among them; and, finally, the sources of the tension between the proslavery interests of the South and the “free labor” interests of the North that culminated in secession and civil war. Research materials are plentiful. Census returns and other government documents, newspapers and periodicals, travelers’ accounts, memoirs and autobiographies, and an abundance of polemical literature have much to tell historians about life on ante-bellum plantations. The autobiographies of former slaves, several twentieth-century oral history collections, and a rich record of songs and folklore are significant sources for the black experience in slavery. All the historical literature, however, from Phillips to the most recent studies, has relied heavily on the enormous collections of manuscript plantation records that survive in research libraries scattered throughout the South. These manuscripts consist of business records, account books, slave lists, overseers’ reports, diaries, private letters exchanged among family members and friends, and even an occasional letter written by a literate slave. They come mostly from the larger tobacco, cotton, sugar, and rice plantations, but a significant number survive from the more modest estates and smaller slaveholdings whose economic operations tended to be less specialized. Plantation records reveal nearly every aspect of plantation life. Not only business operations and day-to-day labor routines, but family affairs, the roles of women, racial attitudes, relations between masters and slaves, social and cultural life, the values shared by members of the planter class, and the tensions and anxieties that were inseparable from a slave society are all revealed with a fullness and candor unmatched by any of the other available sources. Moreover, these records are immensely valuable for studies of black slavery. Needless to say, since they were compiled by

v members of the white master class, they provide little direct evidence of the inner feelings and private lives of the slave population. But they are the best sources of information about the care and treatment of slaves, about problems in the management of slave labor, and about forms of slave resistance short of open rebellion. They also tell us much about the behavior of slaves, from which historians can at least draw inferences about the impact of slavery on the minds and personalities of its black victims. Deposited in southern state archives and in the libraries of many southern universities and historical societies, significantly more plantation records have become available in recent decades. Our publication is designed to assist scholars in their use by offering for the first time an ample selection of the most important materials in a single microfilm collection. Ultimately it will cover each geographical area in which the plantation flourished, with additions of approximately four new collections annually. A special effort is being made to offer the rarer records of the smaller slaveholders and to include the equally rare records of the plantations in the last quarter of the eighteenth century; however, the documentation is most abundant for the operations of the larger plantations in the period between the War of 1812 and the Civil War, and their records will constitute the bulk of our publication.

vii REEL INDEX

Reel 1

Ambler Family Papers, 1772–1880, Amherst and Orange Counties, Virginia; also Great Britain, Accession Number 38-77

This collection of Ambler family papers documents the operation of John Jacquelin Ambler’s Glenambler plantation in Amherst County, Virginia, and the Saint Moor plantation, also in Amherst County, owned by John Ambler, the father of John Jacquelin Ambler. The collection also contains extensive correspondence of the Ambler families and the correspondence and legal and financial records of Philip Pendleton Barbour, a prominent Virginia politician and the father-in-law of John Jacquelin Ambler. The collection is arranged chronologically and spans from 1772 to 1880. The collection begins with the journal of John Jacquelin Ambler, which starts with a brief autobiography, entitled “Memoranda of the Life of John Jacquelin Ambler of Glenambler.” Ambler attended William and Mary College in Williamsburg, Virginia, and after completion of college was licensed to practice law in Virginia. Upon receiving his law license, Ambler took possession of the fifteen-hundred-acre Glenambler plantation, a gift from his father, John Ambler. After taking control of the plantation, Ambler writes that he immediately began making plans to travel to Europe. A detailed, almost day-by-day account of his approximately three-year stay in Europe follows. Ambler’s journal is followed by a series of chronological correspondence and financial records. Much of the correspondence on Reels 2 and 3 pertains to the legal career of Philip Pendleton Barbour, the father-in-law of John Jacquelin Ambler and a prominent Virginia politician and judge. The legal papers pertain to land ownership, sales of property, debts, and personal property. Records pertaining to John Jacquelin Ambler, his father John Ambler, their families, and their plantations begin in the middle of the third reel and continue through to the end of this collection of Ambler family papers at the end of Reel 14. Principal correspondents include Catherine Bush Ambler, Elizabeth Barbour Ambler, Philip St. George Ambler, Philip Pendleton Barbour, Richard Cary Ambler, Frances Todd Barbour, and Catherine Cary Ambler. Plantation operations and operation of the slave system on the Ambler plantations are richly documented in this collection. There is a significant amount of correspondence from overseers on the Ambler plantations. Most of this correspondence comes from William Tucker, an overseer at Glenambler plantation in Amherst County, Virginia, and from Dabney T. Phillips, one of the overseers at John Ambler’s Saint Moor plantation. Both Phillips’s and Tucker’s correspondence regularly mentions the status of slaves and crop production and sales. There are also several plantation books recording business transactions and crop production on the

1 various Ambler plantations. Additionally, the collection includes numerous agreements between John Jacquelin Ambler and his many overseers. Overseers named in the collection include William Tucker, William Applebury, Dabney T. Phillips, Jefferson Sea, Gustavus A. Watts, Stephen Bowles, James M. Daniel Jr., Benjamin Waldrop, Garland Walker, and Stephen Sampson. One of the most detailed overseers’ agreements is a contract between John Jacquelin Ambler and William Applebury (Reel 11, Frame 0012). In this contract, Ambler specified the conditions of Applebury’s employment. These included: “To cultivate and improve the land… To make the Negroes keep their houses clean and tightly covered… To take no friend or relations to live with him… To attend to the clothing of the Negroes—and to have them well nursed and taken care of when they are sick.” Correspondence between John Jacquelin Ambler and his wife, Elizabeth Barbour Ambler, is also illuminating of conditions at Glenambler. He traveled frequently and Elizabeth was often left alone on the plantation. During these periods, she sometimes mentioned plantation operations in her correspondence. For example, a July 9, 1831, letter notes her determination to maintain the plantation in her husband’s absence. In an April 17, 1833, letter, Elizabeth Ambler reports: “The farming operations are going pretty much as when you left us. They expect to finish planting corn tomorrow, though I fear the rain will retard their progress.” The system of American slavery is also richly documented in this collection. For example, financial records include taxes paid on both land and slaves. An August 1820 document lists the slaves on Glenambler plantation broken down by age and sex. Correspondence from William Tucker and from Elizabeth Barbour Ambler often makes brief references to the status of the slaves at Glenambler. For example, an April 10, 1826, letter from William Tucker to Daniel Norborne Norton mentions that the slaves battled illnesses all winter. This letter is one of several that mentions the health of slaves. In an April 10, 1832, letter, Philip St. George Ambler writes that the slave children did not seem to be as liable to scarlet fever as white children. Sometimes, the reports are even more dramatic. A November 21, 1831, letter from Elizabeth Barbour to her husband, John Jacquelin Ambler, reports: “There is no news afloat except that three Negroes have been taken up in Madison and lodged in jail, who confess that they intended to rise upon the whites as soon as they procured firearms and ammunition enough….” There is also a letter from a slave in Florida named Gilbert Anderson to his wife, a slave owned by John Ambler. In this letter, Anderson mentions the possibility of purchasing his wife from John Ambler so that they could live together. Other correspondence mentions runaway slaves. A December 1, 1821, case from Bedford County, Virginia, records the case of a runaway slave named Charles. This document states that Peter Hunter brought to the justice of the peace a runaway slave believed to be the property of John Ambler. Hunter reportedly captured Charles about ten miles outside of Amherst County. Another runaway case is mentioned in a June 29, 1830, letter. This letter to John Jacquelin Ambler refers to a slave named George in Lynchburg, Virginia, and requests that Ambler come to retrieve his property. A September 28, 1832, letter refers to the capture in Pennsylvania of five of Philip Pendleton Barbour’s slaves. A letter from Martin Nalle discusses a runaway slave named Moses and Nalle’s efforts to find Moses and return him to Barbour. This collection of Ambler family papers also contains several documents pertaining to the sale of slaves. A January 14, 1833, letter from John Jacquelin Ambler to his wife reports that his brother recently sold several slaves for $1,600. By 1836, John Jacquelin Ambler had purchased land in Alabama. The difficult health conditions in Alabama, however, forced him to rethink his decision. Correspondence from Alabama occasionally mentions the death of slaves due to illness. In an October 25, 1836, letter to his wife, Ambler tells of his decision to sell his land and his slaves in Alabama. In the 1842 financial records, there is a receipt for the sale of a slave owned by John Jacquelin Ambler. This slave, named Jordan, was sold for $125 and the receipt includes the payment of a 10 percent commission to M. Talbot for completing the sale.

2 Family correspondence in this collection discusses many subjects, including education, health, marriages, social life, and politics. Correspondence from female family members can be found throughout the collection. Other topics covered in the collection include John Jacquelin Ambler’s interest in horses and in purchasing additional plantation lands. N.B. There are several related collections among the holdings of the University of Virginia Library. Ambler and Barbour Family Papers, 1748–1939, Accession Numbers 1921 a–b, 1864, 1997, and 1998 is included in this edition on Reel 15. John Ambler Papers, 1770–1860, Accession Number 1140, is also included in this edition and can be found beginning at Reel 16. Papers, ca. 1775–1845, Accession Number 1486, is included in UPA’s Records of Ante-Bellum Southern Plantations from the Revolution through the Civil War, Series E, Part 2. There are also two related collections among the holdings of the Virginia Historical Society: Barbour Family Papers, 1741–1876, Mss1B2346a; and Barbour Family Papers, 1810–1890, Mss1B2346b. Both of these collections are included in UPA’s Records of Ante-Bellum Southern Plantations from the Revolution through the Civil War, Series M, Part 4.

Ambler and Barbour Family Papers, 1748–1939, Amherst and Orange Counties, Virginia, Accession Numbers 1921 a–b, 1864, 1997, 1998

This collection of Ambler and Barbour Family Papers consists of family correspondence, legal records, speeches by Philip Pendleton Barbour, financial records, and several bound volumes documenting the operation of plantations owned by John Ambler and John Jacquelin Ambler. The collection spans from 1748 to 1939. A substantial amount of the correspondence in this collection is family correspondence. In addition to familial matters, other topics addressed in the family correspondence include politics, social matters, marriages, plantation management, crop production, and health conditions. Principal correspondents include Richard Ambler, Edward Ambler, John Ambler, John Jacquelin Ambler, Elizabeth Barbour Ambler, Frances Todd Barbour, Philip Pendleton Barbour, Philippa Barbour, John Jacquelin Ambler Jr., Laura B. Ambler, Edmund P. Barbour, Richard Cary Ambler, and Catherine Bush Ambler. This collection also contains several items related to plantation management and slavery. For example, an August 1821 letter details instructions for the hiring of an overseer. These instructions included giving preference to middle-aged, single, male applicants and to men who had previously been farmers rather than tobacco makers. A December 5, 1824, letter from Dabney T. Phillips, overseer at Saint Moor plantation, to John Ambler provides detailed comments about the plantation, among them observations on tobacco production and disciplining of slaves. Materials related to plantation management and slavery on the Ambler plantations can also be found in the files of financial papers (Reel 15, Frame 0757) and bound volumes (Reel 15, Frame 0846). Several other items in this collection offer insight into the system of American slavery. In the legal papers (Reel 15, Frame 0708), there is a record of a ten-year-old mulatto slave named Andrew sold by Dan Bryan to Philip Pendleton Barbour for $350. A November 14, 1832, letter to Philip Pendleton Barbour concerns the apprehension of a runaway slave owned by Barbour. The slave was apprehended in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. N.B.
