Comparative studies on model taxa have provided important insights, but much more needs to be done to unravel the context dependencies of these findings. The cactus family (Cactaceae), one of the most popular horticultural plant groups, is an interesting case study. Hundreds of cactus species have been introduced outside their native ranges; a few of them are among the most damaging invasive plant species in the world. We reviewed the dri- vers of introductions and invasions in the family and seek insights that can be used to minimize future risks. We com- piled a list of species in the family and determined which have been recorded as invasive. We also mapped current global distributions and modelled the potential global distributions based on distribution data of known invasive taxa. -

The aim of this study, therefore, was to characterize the reproductive system of K. laetivirens through analyses of floral morphology, trophic resources and floral visitors. Floral structures, pollen / egg ratio, in vitro pollen germination, pollen grain structure in scanning microscopy and the availability of trophic resources by the evaluation of potential and instant nectar were described. -

Ritter cactus var. darwinii Familia: CACTACEAE Subfamilia: OPUNTIOIDEAE Sinonimia Opuntia darwinii, Tephrocactus darwinii Antecedentes Generales Maihueniopsis darwinii, al igual que, Maihuenia patagonica, Pterocactus hickenii, Pterocactus australis, Austrocatus patagonicus, corresponden a un grupo aislado de cactáceas que se desarrolla en Chile en la Región de Aisén, en las cercanías de la ciudad de Chile Chico. El desarrollo de estas especies en esta zona y no en otras de las llamadas islas de estepa de la región, se asume que se debe exclusivamente a las condiciones favorables microclimáticas producidas por el gran cuerpo de agua que representa el lago General Carrera. Maihueniopsis darwinii posee plantas en cojín de 10 (15) cm de alto y 20 cm de diámetro. Artejos de hasta 3 cm de diámetro. Ovoides, verde oscuro. Areolas hasta 4 mm de diámetro, circulares, grandes, con abundantes pelos blancos. Gloquidios de 2 a 3 mm, en general inconspicuos. Espinas ausentes en las areolas basales y 2 a 5 en las superiores, de 2 a 4 cm, castañas, con un grueso nervio central y dos alas laterales, a veces con espinas secundarias hasta 1 cm adpresas, hialinas. Flores acampanadas grandes de 5 cm de alto. Tépalos color naranjo (Kiesling, 1984). Tallos redondos al corte transversal, nunca comprimidos; ovoides a cónicos, no tuberculados, areolas redondas a ovaladas. Espinas redondas a aplanadas; las centrales 1 a 4, más largas que las radiales (Hoffmann & Walter, 2004) Frutos carnosos, similares a los artejos por su forma y color. Plantas en forma de cojines, generalmente muy densos. -

My big thanks goes also to Irwin Lightstone from NTCSS for introducing me to Zoom meetings and being very helpful with practical advice. MEMBERSHIP KATHY FEWOX & JULY OLSON Due to coronavirus social distancing, both the March and April meetings at the Metropolitan Multi-Service Center had to be cancelled. So was everything fun we had planned for this part of the year. Big Bend field trip, open gardens, Spring Sale, potting party — all gone with the pandemic. However, as disappointed as we all were, it had to be done. Nobody wants to become ill, or cause someone else to get sick. On the bright side, the April membership meeting was held via Zoom. Twelve members took part. We did not have an official program but three plants of the month were presented, one from March when the meeting was cancelled and the two plants from April. Presentations were very nice and pictures and plants could be seen clearly. Sadly, two members of the club recently lost loved ones. David Van Langen’s father, Burk, passed away on April 28, only a few months after David’s mother’s death. After an eight-year-long illness, starting with cancer and most recently vascular dementia, Liliana Cracraft’s mother Maria Angelica Treviño (Keka) passed away on March 2. -

Características ¾ Porte: árboles, arbustos, hierbas o lianas, a veces crasas, con tallos dextrorso-volubles, rastreros o erectos, con látex en tubos laticíferos continuos y con haces vasculares bicolaterales. ¾ Hojas: simples, opuestas, alternas o verticiladas de bordes enteros u ondulados, pecioladas con glándulas en la base foliar o peciolar, estípulas nulas o interpeciolares raras. ¾ Flores: solitarias axilares o en inflorescencias racimosas o cimosas, umbeliformes, interpeciolares o terminales, con brácteas y bractéolas. Perfectas, actinomorfas o apenas zigomorfas., ¾ Perianto: cáliz, 5 (-4) sépalos de prefloración imbricada o valvar, a menudo con 1 a numerosas glándulas en la cara interna o en la base. Corola 5 pétalos soldados, contorta o valvar, rotácea, campanulada, infundibuliforme, con tubo de longitud variable. En la subfamilia Asclepiadoideae, hay otro verticilo, entre la corola y el androceo, denominado corona, con lóbulos simples o dobles, tubulosos o con lóbulos independientes, rodeado o no por un anillo carnoso, e inserto en la corola, en el ginostegio o en ambos a la vez. ¾ Estambres: isómeros y alternos con los lóbulos de la corola, adheridos a distinta altura. Anteras frecuentemente sagitadas, con dehiscencia longitudinal introrsa, libres o adosadas en cono; tecas totalmente poliníferas o en la base con caudas estériles, conectivo con apéndice en el ápice, libre o adherido al estigma. ¾ Gineceo: ovario súpero, 2 carpelos soldados, 2-locular de placentación axilar, o también 1-locular de placentación parietal; óvulos 2-∞; estilo en la base a menudo partido, breve o generalmente filiforme, estigma en cabezuela variada. En la subfamilia Asclepiadoideae, Androceo y Gineceo, están colocados en un solo cuerpo central llamado ginostegio, en el cual los estambres se hallan ocupando las paredes laterales y los carpelos la base y la parte central. -

The area was surveyed and 8 Asclepi- adaceous plant species were collected. These plant species are Calotropis procera (Aiton) W. T. Aiton. Caralluma edulis (Edgew.) Benth., Leptadenia pyrotecnica (Forssk.) Decne., Oxystelma esculentum (L. f.) R. Br., Pentatropis nivalis (J. F. Gmel.) D. V. Field & J. R. I. Wood, Pergularia daemia (Forssk.) Blatt.& McCann., Periploca aphylla Decne. and Stapelia gigantea N.E.Br. The study showed that five plants were used ethnobotanically in the area. All the plants were deposited as voucher specimens in the Department of plant sciences, Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad, for future references. Complete macro & microscopic detailed morphological features of the species have been discussed. Taxo- nomic key was developed to differentiate closely related taxa.
