Email: [email protected] Abstract: Total 153 species of butterflies distributed in five families have been reported from Phansad wildlife sanctuary. Further to this there are seven species which might be existing in the area. Nymphalidae and Lycaenidae were the co-dominant families with 47 species each. Pieridae represented by 17 species, Hesperidae by 31 species and Papilionidae by 11 species. Tiger Watch Annual Report 2019-2020 There appears to be a new set of challenges on the road ahead of us, particularly with the alarming rise in hu- Dear friends, man wildlife conflict and COVID 19. Nevertheless, I am still confident, that with our degree of information, leadership and community engagement, we are ideally placed to mitigate conflict and address all challenges. 2019-20 has been a productive year for all at Tiger Watch. Our existing niche in the Ranthambhore Tiger Reserve has recently undergone expansion by Iskander Lalljee supporting new partners in other parts of Rajasthan. Indeed, while there has Chairman Tiger Watch been significant growth in all of our interventions, there is no denying that the COVID-19 pandemic has proven to be a formidable challenge. Yet, it is our proven resilience to this challenge that is worth taking note of as well as how our subsequent adaptations created unprecedented opportunities in some of our most longstanding interventions in the conservation of wildlife. The Village Wildlife Volunteers, successfully monitored 25 different Tigers with 295 camera trap pictures this year! Their anti-poaching work has been formidable too. This also entailed the detection of snares, gunpowder bombs, cases of electrocution and the collection of timber/non-timber plants. They have also reported cases of illegal mining, along with issues of growing concern such as feral dogs and human-wildlife conflict. There is no denying that interlopers of various hues see the COVID-19 pandemic as a golden opportunity to exploit the forest and its resources, yet the fact that the VWV were able to ensure the arrest of poachers and other criminals shows that the program is resilient to a crisis like the pandemic, by virtue of being a commu- nity led initiative which cannot be redirected for relief work like a government agency. -

Biodiversity Journal, 2014, 5 (1): 61–68 Preliminary ecological studies on the Lepidoptera from Khajjiar lake catchment, Himachal Pradesh, India Vikram Singh* & Harjeet Singh Banyal Department of Biosciences, Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla -171005 (HP), India *Corresponding author: [email protected] ABSTRACT A study on the Lepidoptera from Khajjiar lake of District Chamba of Himachal Pradesh re- vealed the presence of 49 species of butterflies belonging to 41 genera and 10 families. Anal- ysis of data revealed that family Nymphalidae and Satyridae (12 species each) dominated the Lepidoptera fauna of Khajjiar lake catchment, followed by Pieridae and Lycaenidae (6 species each), Hesperiidae (4 species), Papilionidae (3 species), Erycinidae and Danaidae (2 species each), and Acraeidae and Riodinidae (1 species each). Categorization of the species further revealed that of these 49 species, 5 were very common, 32 common, 5 uncommon and 7 were rare. Moreover, 3 species were listed in Indian Wildlife Protection Act (1972), Lethe scanda (Moore, 1857) and Lampides boeticus (Linnaeus, 1767) placed under scheduled II and Castalius rosimon (Fabricius, 1775) under scheduled IV of the Act. Our study revealed that forest area supports the highest diversity of butterflies followed by lake areas and human set- tlements. KEY WORDS Butterflies; ecology; biodiversity; India.
