VOX PATRUM 75 (2020) 201-228 DOI: 10.31743/vp.4963 Mariia Hupalo1 Motion of Human Nature towards Imago Dei in the Thought of St. Maximus the Confessor The concept of becoming and flux has become central for postmodern philosophy. Anthropology in 21st century needs to deal with the major questions that the ideological shifts and social disasters of the previous century have challenged us with, as well as new technocratic anthropolo- gies that rise today. The well-known Judeo-Christian concept of image of God seems old-fashioned and irrelevant to modern highly technological society. Utilitarian philosophy presents us with a very pessimistic view on man: humans are hedonistic, egotistic and strive for personal interest. Society is a market of interests, where constant compromises and deals between conflicting needs occur. Another issue that returns to us in a new form is naturalism that becomes an organic part of techno-humanistic and transhumanistic worldview, dismisses human free will and ability to con- form to ethical principles and reduces human decision-making to a highly complex, albeit not perfect algorithm2. Doing Orthodox Political Theology Today Insights from the Document For the Life of the World: Toward a Social Ethos of the Orthodox Church (2020) N!"#$%#& A&'(#)$!&* !e document titled For the Life of the World: Toward a Social Ethos of the Ortho dox Church, authored by a special commission of Orthodox scholars ap- pointed by the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew is a document that can be de"nitely understood as a political manifesto of Eastern Orthodoxy for the 21st century, namely for this period of history and not for a by-gone historical setting or a Christian utopia (either the Byzantine Empire or Holy Russia), a period of time with urgent problems and challenges that call for our attention. !erefore, bringing to the fore the personalist anthropological view inherent in the document itself, an attempt has been made in the text to critically re#ect and highlight certain relevant aspects of the document (a positive reception of liberal democracy, human rights language, solidarity to the poor, etc.). !e goal is to show how theologically important this document is for the Church witness to our pluralistic world. The theological and doxological reference to the Resurrection and the Pentecost according to the orations of Gregory of Nazianzus XLI and XLV La referencia teológica y doxológica a la Resurrección y al Pentecostés según las oraciones de Gregorio Nacianceno XLI y XLV La referència teològica i doxològica a la Resurrecció i la Pentecosta segons les oracions de Gregori de Nazianz XLI i XLV A referência teológica e doxológica à Ressurreição e ao Pentecostes segundo as orações de Gregório de Nazianzo XLI e XLV Eirini ARTEMI1 Abstract: In the forty-one oration, Gregory of Nazianzus analyzes the divinity of the Holy Spirit, a subject that is developed again with more severe way in his Fifth Theological Oration. Gregory tries to establish the point by quite a different set of arguments from those adopted in the former discourse, none of whose points are here repeated. In the other oration, forty-five, Gregory refers to the importance of the resurrection for the human race. He presents Christ as the new Adam who saved the human from the death and reunites again the man with God. This is a subject that is referred to the oration forty-one, too. In this paper, we will examine the teaching of Gregory of Nazianzus about the divine status of the Holy Spirit and his equality to the other two persons of the Triune God through theological and biblical images. Also, we will present how he connects his teaching for anthropology based on the Christology. In the end we will show how Gregory produced these orations for public festivals within the literarily ripe tradition of pagan festival rhetoric, but he gives to his orations theological content.

In other words, because the desire was defined as “motor” that moves the man (the one that propels him towards the goals, ideals, respective its projects) and refers to the acquisition of favorable and avoidance of harmful, consumer society uses this advantage in its favor. Regarding the term of desire, it can be specified that it is the subject of interdisciplinary fields, being present in philosophical discourse as well as in the psychological one, the medical one, respectively the theological one. The social field can be added to those distinct perspectives, this one being of interest in the present research. It is important to make a distinction concerning the term of desire, being brought into discussion the natural desires on the one hand, and the artificial desires, the induced ones, on the other. The last ones are preferred by today's society, numerous techniques being used for manipulation and creation of human desires. Accordingly, it is about the induced desires, those being, in essence, fake, perverted, unnatural. The desire induced by today’s social context it is carefully masked, in other words this is an illusion of a natural desire.

Recently, theologians of the Pentecostal/Charismatic tradition have started to examine the works of Saint Symeon the New Theologian. The latter’s emphasis on personal experi- ence of the Holy Spirit and Christiﬁcation provides a fertile ground for encounter between Orthodox and Pentecostal/Charismatic scholars. Recent Pentecostal/Charismatic scholarship on Symeon is reviewed in the light of contemporary Orthodox scholarship. The 2013 meeting was chaired by the Catholic Co-president of the Working Group, Bishop Gerhard Feige of Magdeburg, Chairman of the Commission for Ecumenical Affairs of the German Catholic Bishops’ Conference. The position of Orthodox Co-president was vacant because in the period since the last meeting, the Orthodox Co-president, Metropolitan John (Yazigi), head of the European Diocese of the Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch (Paris), was elected Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch and All the East. Archbishop-elect Job (Getcha) of Telmessos, future head of the Archdiocese of Russian Orthodox Churches in Western Europe within the Ecumenical Patriarchate and already a member of the group, was elected and agreed to serve as the new Orthodox Co-president. The first session of the meeting was opened with the participation of Archimandrite Stephanos Tolios, the chancellor of the Metropolis of Thessaloniki. On November 15, Metropolitan Elpidophoros of Prusa visited the meeting and extended the blessings of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.

Ecumenical Reflections on the Presence of God in Eastern Orthodoxy, James Clarke & Co, Cambridge, 2013, 298 p. Ciprian Iulian Toroczkai* This volume is based on a colloquium organized by the Institute for Orthodox Christian Studies, University of Cambridge, on 5 December 2008. Taking as its starting point the familiar work of David Bradshaw, Aristotle East and West: Metaphysics and the Division of Christendom (Cambridge, 2004)1, the authors discuss the distinction (not separation) between the divine essen- ce and energy, which is a teaching specific to Orthodoxy. The first study emphasizes two issues: on the one hand, this teaching is at the very core of the Orthodox tradition, on the other hand, it has no direct equivalent in the West. The remainder of the volume details and deepens these two issues, resulting in a genuine ecumenical debate about this (still) controversial doctrine. All authors, be they Orthodox, Anglican, Calvinist, or Catholic, discuss the essence–energy distinction from a historical, theolo- gical, and philosophical perspective. The result is a heterogeneous collection of views which, in our opinion, has as a converging point the search for an answer to the question: to what extent is the topic relevant to the Christian East and West? In the opinion of David Bradshaw, Constatinos Athanasopoulos, and Loudovikos Nikolaos, the essence–energy distinction is a key doctrine of Ort- hodoxy and reflects its superiority over Western theology, which draws heavily on Aristotelian notions. The main sources of the Orthodox tradition are St Paul, the Apostolic Fathers, the Cappadocian Fathers, Dionysius the Areopa- gite, John of Damascus, Maximus the Confessor, and Gregory Palamas.

Overview @ http://academia.utoronto.edu/PaulLadouceur Introduction There are more theologians per square kilometre in Greece than anywhere else in the world. This makes it quite a challenge to speak about theology in modern Greece. My talk today focuses mainly on the three dominant types or modes of Greek theology in modern times. I will refer to the first type of theology as “academic theology,” because it is primarily the theology of the “classroom,” as some refer to it. It is characteristic of formal theological education, patterned largely on Western models, in both the Catholic and the Protestant theological traditions. This theology is heavily influenced by the scholastic theological tradition, inherited from the Middle Ages in Western Europe. The second type of theology was that of the Greek religious brotherhoods or fraternities, especially the most important fraternity, called Zoe (life). The brotherhoods were strongly influenced by the Protestant spiritual tendency or movement known as pietism. I call the third type of theology “neopatristic theology,” by which Orthodox theology is inspired both by the theological method of the ancient Fathers of the Church, especially the early Greek Fathers, and by the actual content of their theology. I will also discuss certain theological developments outside the “academy,” and what is erroneously referred to as “post-patristic theology” in the contemporary Greek theological scene.
