PAGE 12 Te Awamutu Courier, Thursday, March 6, 2008 IN BUSINESS CIRCLES Specialised child-centred play therapy service Judi Jacobsen offers special- ist play therapy for children (2 ½-10 years) at the Mahoe Health Professionals clinic. Mrs Jacobsen says child- centred play therapy provides a safe, respectful environment for children who have experi- enced trauma in their lives. As children often have dif- fi culty expressing in words how they feel, play is used to allow them to express their thoughts and feelings. “Just like talking is for an adult in counselling, play is for a child in this form of therapy. In child’s play, toys are their words and play is their lan- guage. “Because play is the natural world of a child, through play they can express their feelings about trauma such as loss, grief, change, abuse, neglect and chronic illness. “The trauma often results in children who experience school diffi culties, aggression, social adjustment diffi culties, sleep- ing or eating problems.” Through her training Mrs Jacobsen is able to recognise the signifi cance of the child’s symbolic play and help them understand their thoughts and emotions.
