PH 871 8881 END OF AN ERA: Retiring patron Clem Holmes (centre) and his wife Wilma are honoured by fellow Te Awamutu Tennis Sub Association members. 281046AD By Colin Thorsen One of the great characters of Te Awamutu ten- nis Clem Holmes has hung up his racket after 30 years as patron of the sub association. A special function was held at Te Awamutu Ten- nis clubrooms in honour of the retiring patron, af- ter an unprecendented three decades in the role. Forty past and present players, representing the majority of clubs in the sub association, attended the function. Sub association president, Richard Grayling sprung a ‘nice surprise’ on the affable Holmes by presenting him with life membership. Holmes said he and his wife Wilma knew about the evening being arranged to mark his retirement but they had no idea about the life membership. “It’s a big surprise, brilliant,” said Holmes, on receiving his certifi cate. In a remarkable stint as patron, he missed only one sub association end-of-season prizegiving in 30 years. He was overseas at the time. Star players come and go - it’s people like Clem Holmes that keep any sporting organisation going. He and Bill Hancock instigated having an an- nual prizegiving function. “We thought it was a good idea instead of players winning a trophy and being told (the same day) to get it engraved.” He recalls one occasion when no-one was coming from the Hairini club, to collect a trophy they had won, at a function held at the Delwyn. The club ended up paying for Norm Brown and his wife to go and collect the cup. Holmes was a top level player, representing the sub assocation for 35 years. In those days, the rep team would leave at 5am to play Taumarunui and return late that evening. “We’d leave in the dark, play three games each, then return well after dark, making for a long day’s tennis.” Holmes played No 1 for Pukeatua for many years. Undoubted highlight was winning the Double Cup for the fi rst and only time in 1967. There were fi ve Holmes in the six-strong team - two of Clem’s cousins, an uncle and his father. Another hard-working, sub association stalwart, Marjorie Irvine has taken over the role of patron. Call goes out for unused glasses Have you recently replaced your reading or sun glasses? If so Lions would love your old pair. New Zealand Lions Clubs with the support of OPSM and Visique Optometrists will be marking Lions World Sight Day next Wednesday (Oct.13). Internationally, Lions work goes a long way to help sufferers of sight-related issues. In New Zealand glasses collected for Lions World Sight Day help meet the desperate needs of Kiwis and near neighbours in the Pacifi c. Last year New Zealanders generously donated over 7,500 eyeglasses and sun glasses. “We will be asking New Zealanders to dig out their old and unused glasses in any condition and drop them off at their nearest OPSM store or Vi- sique Optometrist next week (Monday, October 11 to Saturday, October 16). The glasses will then be collected, graded and 281TC001/04 cleaned at one of two Lions Clubs eyeglass recy- cling centres. They can then be distributed to areas in New Zealand by Lions and to the South Pacifi c by Volunteer Ophthalmic Services Overseas (VOSO), a New Zealand wide charity that provides eye ex- aminations and surgery to South Pacifi c nations.

An exhilarating marriage of suspense, romance and comedy. It’s an utterly accessible, thoroughly entertaining WWII drama whose mild comedic touches detract not a bit from the haunted memory of Nazi occupation. Sumptuous visuals and a great star cast. This is a they-don’t make- ’em-like-that-anymore movie, one that only wants to give us a couple of hours of uncomplicated fun. A satisfying film every frame of the way. Just what the doctor ordered for older moviegoers longing to return to the golden age of film. Just about perfect.
