In the beginning, someone had a lot of faith in Alabama. There was so much trust in what Alabama was, that a record label was established around this one act. That's what made Dave Coutts' Smile Records and gave Alabama their initial Canada -wide exposure. Smile Records is one of the several indepen- dent record companies in Canada at present. It is part of a whole artist oriented corpora- tion that maintains a high degree of quality in whatever they're involved. These principles are applied to every facet of the artist's development from promotion to the technical production, and it's with these basics in mind that Coutts hopes to achieve a foundation for Smile Records and make it into Canada's prestige label. Alabama means "We come in peace and here we rest" and that's what this group of four has essentially done. Their roots are Cajun and accented by liberal amounts of white southern soul, and making Canada their home has combined this influence with our own country's special influence to give them their country -rock uniqueness. "They just want to play and perform and write music and sing about people getting together and leave the blues behind". And it's the interaction of these musicians and the many instruments they play that makes these desires more of a reality.
