MOSKENES Area: 118.6 km2 Population: approx.1128 Municipal centre: Reine he island of Mosk enesøy is located in the untamed, western part of the Lofoten Is- Page lands. On the far side of the island, you will find long, chalk-white beaches. The island Tis surrounded by strong tidal currents like the Sundstraumen strait, and the infamous 28 Maelstrom. Glaciers and other forces of Nature have sculpted the island landscape, which is among the wildest and most fascinating that Norway can offer. Traces of Stone Age settlement dating back over 5,500 years can be found on the island. Several old place names, such as Moskenes, bear witness to early Sami settlement. The inhabitants of Moskenesøy live largely on the eastern side of the island, where the best harbour conditions are to be found. Earlier, there was also settlement along the entire northern coast of the island – the so-called outer coast, but owing to poor harbour conditions and perilous waters, all of them have now been abandoned. Å, Hamnøy and Sakrisøy are particularly well-known for their old, well-preserved architectural environment. The Lofoten Fishery, the Fishing Village and the Rorbu Cabin Abundant Resources in the North When the great glaciers receded from our northern coastlines, the cod began its annual migra- tion from the Barents Sea to spawn in the waters of Lofoten. Every winter for over 10,000 years, the coastal people have caught the tasty Norwegian Arctic cod, eating the fresh fish together with the liver and roes, or producing stockfish and cod liver oil - used for bartering and trading purposes.

CELLMARK FINANCIAL SUMMARY 2020 Bridging the distance FINANCIAL SUMMARY THEME SMÖGENBRON, SWEDEN Bridging the distance The theme of this Financial Summary 2020 was a very special year that had an immense impact on everyone and everything – professionally and personally. This is especially true for a company that provides products, services, and solutions to a global market. How well we succeed from this point on, will be determined largely by our ability to work together in the face of brand new challenges. This is the time to grow and deepen relationships; between colleagues, countries, and cultures – made all the more difficult by the need for social distancing. The only way to keep surpassing expectations with passion and purpose, becomes clear: first and foremost, it will be about bridging the distance that the pandemic has made necessary. To keep connecting, staying close, and working together over great distances. To focus on our global advantages, and not yield to isolation. Bridging the distance is the way forward, and therefore it is also the theme of this Financial Summary. Light- and dark-coloured biotite gneisses and in part amphibole gneisses, of supra crustal origin have been intruded by a Precambrian basic pluton. Later a quartz diorite was intruded into the basic rocks. By assimilation of basic xenoliths in the quartz diorite a hybrid rock was formed. The whole area was penetratively folded and metamorphosed during a late Ordovician — early Silurian Caledonian orogenic event.

Tourism- and local community development in Lofoten - Broad value creation in the fishing and agriculture village Fredvang, the significance of establishing Nasjonal turiststi.

The Lofoten archipelago consists mainly of Palaeoproterozoic rocks, including paragneisses and younger plutons (ca 1800 Ma) of the anorthosite–mangerite–charnockite–granite (AMCG) suite. The Precambrian basement of the Lofoten and the adjoining Vesterålen islands is part of a NNE-trending basement high that is overlain to the east by a stack of allochthonous nappes occupying the central axis of the Scandinavian Caledonides. The unique setting of Lofoten as an exposed ridge of lower crustal rocks forming a basement high on a highly extended continental margin is a result of an exceptional combination of tectonic events and subsequent glacial erosion and weathering. Apart from its breathtaking landscape, the well-exposed Lofoten archipelago provides an exceptional possibility to study the effects of past and present geological processes.

  • LOFOTEN ISLAND KAYAK TOUR by JAMES BAXTER
LOFOTEN ISLAND KAYAK TOUR by JAMES BAXTER This is a short account of a 9 day kayak trip round the Lofoten Islands off the west coast of Northern Norway and just above the Arctic Circle. They form a 150 km long rugged wall rising nearly a km high jutting out into the Arctic Ocean towards Greenland. The area is quite tidal and the nutrient rich currents allow rich fish and bird concentrations. During the summer months they enjoy 24 hours sunlight and remarkably good weather. Often, however, the spine of the island chain acts as a weather divide with wet weather on one side and clear weather on the other. The Lofoten Islands are composed of 5 main Islands with many outlyers. At the south west tip of Lofoten is the infamous Moskenstraumen, a huge tidal flow. Kabelvåg to Raften. 39 km. 8 hrs This first day was east along the south coast of Austvågøya, the most easterly of the Lofoten Islands. It was a very pleasant journey with the breeze behind me as I paddled to the southern opening of the very impressive cleft of Raftsundet and made my way up between the kilometre high jagged peaks on each side.

Thulêan Geography Hillside Bø The land of Thulê is based on real world locations, Lofoten Hillsideland Liland and Vesterålen in Northern Norway. He can also add whatever he Meadowstead Bøstad wants to the map; castles, caverns, chasms, volcanoes or Meadtown Medby whatever, as he sees fit. The real world maps will provide him Meshcove Island Moskenesøya with a highly realistic, detailed and beautiful foundation Millheadland Mølnarodden though, and although the foundation is the same, every myth Nordland Nordland master will be able to forge his own unique Thulê, just like he Onion Cove Laukvika Pale Bleik wants it to be.

  • Drilling Oil Into Arctic Minds?
Faculty or Humanities, Social Science and Education Drilling oil into Arctic minds? State security, industry consensus and local contestation Berit Kristoffersen A dissertation for the degree of Philosophiae Doctor May 2014 ʹ Abstract The thesis title Drilling Oil into Arctic Minds? points to the central role of geographical imaginaries in state and industry efforts to push oil production northward, and the extent to which local communities and civil society respond to these imaginaries. Critically examining how imaginaries describe and legitimize opportunities for future oil and gas extraction and expose scenarios of economic growth and activity, the thesis identifies the territorial, political and discursive strategies of the state, industry and society, looking at emergent (re)constitutions of economic- and geopolitical space in the Norwegian north. By employing analytical tools and insights from critical geopolitics and security studies, I unpack the processes and practices of the state in relation to other actors. The thesis is composed of four articles, which independently examine these dynamics. Through the articles I illustrate the power of the Norwegian state in how it frames a hierarchy of security concerns where climate change and environmental concerns are pitted against economic, territorial and energy security interests. This is reflected through new geopolitical imaginaries, relating to environmental concerns and energy security such as opportunistic adaptation in the Arctic. The combined contribution of the articles is to unpack state-industry relations that are characterized by consensus. I also show how the established state-industry geopolitical construct of the Norwegian Arctic as an economic space is challenged, if not destabilized, as the Norways northern seascapes might not be as promising as initially asserted.
