President’s Message By Barbara Saltzman Still Loving The Jester – After Two Decades Pieces of The Jester’s rainbow circled back to me over and over this year. It was as if tiny fragments broke away when the book was published in 1995 and returned with stories about how much The Jester Has Lost His Jingle has changed lives during its 22 years in print. Of course, nothing lit up the sky more than reconnecting with Jesse Hernandez in July. As recounted on the cover, Jesse overcame all the dire medical predictions made in 1995 to grow into a handsome, articulate young man. He credits The Jester Has Lost His Jingle with helping Phund President Barbara Saltzman with late him along the way. son, author-artist David Saltzman at Yale, 1988.

The next month, out of the blue, Barbara Newell called from Florida with a very similar story about The Jester and her son, now 29. She first reached out in August 1997 to tell me about Logan, who was diagnosed with cancer at 3 in 1992, ultimately going through six years of treatment. “He received The Jester when it was first published and it helped us both smile through all those tough days. I think its optimism and sense of fun and helping others helped Logan move forward. He and his wife Geri adopted a little girl from China in 1998. “As a toddler, Sharon was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. She was treated at Children’s National Medical Center in D.C., and was given The Jester Has Lost His Jingle at the oncology clinic. little bit after my sixth birthday, I ended up in the hospital. I was Adiagnosed with Wilms tumor. It was in my right kidney. Instead of going to kindergarten, I was at the hospital once a week getting chemo. I got chemo for 12 weeks. Then I had surgery to remove the tumor. The tumor was very large and because of that, they had to remove my right kidney, too. People sent me presents. One of my favorites was The Jester Has Lost His Jingle. In the book, there is a girl in the hospital that also had a tumor. That surprised me. She taught The Jester & Pharley how to laugh again. My parents told me how proud they are that I never lost my jingle. I hope every other kid who has a tumor can find their jingle with The Jester & Pharley, too. Never lose YOUR jingle!

Madison stays strong with The Jester & Pharley. ‘David’s Story Brings You to a Place of Happy Joy’ By Susan Jones-Radlein

A year ago our family was turned upside down by an uninvited guest. Our precious six-year- old Madison was diagnosed with Wilms tumor (kidney cancer). Madison had always been a healthy, happy child. This diagnosis came as such a surprise and shock. One day we were planning for Christmas vacation, the next we were stocking up on surgical masks and hand sanitizer and learning how to care for our cancer-stricken daughter. Friends and family were such a support, from cooking meals to dropping off gifts to keep Madison entertained. One special gift turned out to be The Jester Has Lost His Jingle. Lunada Bay Cub Scout Pack 276 members take the Cub Scout oath — “To help other people at all times” — very seriously. This year, the Palos Verdes Estates, CA-based Cubs put in hour after hour to help ill children find their smiles with The Jester Has Lost His Jingle. Partnering with The Jester & Pharley Phund to bring joy to hospitalized children during the holiday season, they gave up many weekends to introduce The Jester to shoppers at local markets. For every copy of The Jester sold by Lunada Bay Cub Scouts, The Phund is donating another to a hospitalized child. By Thanksgiving the Cubs had sold 200 copies. “Our young Cub Scouts are so excited to be working with The Jester & Pharley Phund on this project to help ill children,” said Cub Scouts Ben Forte, left, and Patrick Lowenstein introduce The Pack leader James Lowenstein of Palos Verdes Estates, CA.
