Auch wenn es noch zu früh ist für eine endgültige Bilanz, so lässt sich aber doch feststellen: Die Spiele der XXIX. Olympiade waren die Fortsetzung einer Erfolgsgeschichte. Bei einem Rückblick der letzten 50 Jahre fällt auf, dass es unter den Ausrichtern Olympischer Spiele sowohl Gewinner als auch Verlierer gab. Erfolgreich waren sicherlich Tokio 1964, München 1972, Los Angeles 1984 und Seoul 1988. Die Spiele in Japan werden mit dem ökonomischen „Take off“ des Landes in Verbindung gebracht. 1972 präsentierte sich ein neues offenes Deutschland mit vorbildlichen Sportstätten und wegweisender Infrastruktur. Los Angeles zeichnete sich durch das Merkmal des „money turn over“ aus, da das private Organisationskomitee zum ersten Mal erhebliche Gewinne erzielen konnte. Mit den Spielen in Südkorea war der Transformationsprozess einer Gesellschaft hin zu einer parlamentari- schen Demokratie verbunden. Dem stehen jedoch die Spiele von Montreal 1976, Sydney 2000 und Athen 2004 gegenüber. Montreal war ökonomisch eine Katastrophe, Sydney beklagte trotz erfolgreicher Spiele eben- falls eine unzureichende Kostendeckung, und auch die Nachhaltigkeit der Sportstätten konn- te nicht gesichert werden.
