A little over two months later, Charlene Curtis was hired to take over as the third full‐time head coach and the 17th head coach in the history of the program. During the Curtis Era the word “Lady” was dropped from the team’s moniker and “Owls” was adopted as the team nickname. Temple women’s basketball players have gone on to prosperous careers in the Women’s National Basketball League.

• Candice Dupree ‘06 solidified her place in the Temple record books when she became the program’s first WNBA Draft pick in April of 2006. Dupree, who was named the A‐10 and Big 5 Player and Defensive Player of the Year for two straight years, was drafted sixth overall by the Chicago Sky.

• Kamesha Hairston ‘07, the A‐10 Player of the Year, an Associated Press Honorable Mention All‐American and a WBCA/Kodak Regional All‐American, became Temple’s second consecutive WNBA First Round Draft Pick when she was selected 12th overall by the Connecticut Sun.

• Shey Peddy ‘12 was Temple women’s basketball’s third WNBA Draft pick when she was Dawn Staley, Comets selected in the second round (23rd overall) by the Chicago Sky in the 2012 WNBA Draft. Peddy, a WBCA All‐Region selection, was named both the A‐10 Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year in 2012.

• Forward Candice Dupree in in her eighth season with the WNBA. Drafted by the Chicago Sky in 2006, she was traded to the after four seasons in Chicago.

• Former Temple head coach Dawn Staley, who retired from the WNBA in 2006, remains one of the league’s most recognizable player. A five‐time All‐Star, she had a successful run for the Charlotte Sting (1999‐2005) before being traded to the Houston Comets (2005‐06).

• Staley was honored as a member of the WNBA’s All‐Decade Team. Starting in 2007, the WNBA began presenting the Dawn Staley Community Leadership Award to the player who best exemplifies the characteristics of a leader in the community where she works or lives.

• In 2006, Staley was voted an All‐Star for the fifth time and became the first player to suit up for bothe the Eastern and Western Conference squads in league history.
