The official name of Iran is the “Islamic Republic of Iran” . ‘Persia’ was historically the common name for Iran (it was called Persia until 1935) . Iran is home to one of the world's oldest civilizations . Iran means “the land of the Aryans” Politics . The revolution of Iran was in 1979 by Ayatollah Khomeini . Before the revolution, Iran was a constitutional monarchy. The country was ruled by the Royal Government of Reza Shah Pahlavi . After the revolution, the Iranian government system became the Islamic Republic and its national day is the 12th Farvardin (1st of April) . The Iranians choose their own president. The election is carried out once every four years. Each president serves a four-year term and cannot serve more than two consecutive terms . The president uses the media to announce to the country the government’s plans and programs . The president has some say in the level of media freedom and political openness . There’s a Fire in the Kitchen! An Empirical Analysis of Restaurants Burning Money as a Signal of Quality By Andrew N. Pocius A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Bachelor of Arts with Honors in Economics Professor Robert Gazzale Williams College Williamstown, Massachusetts May 2006 Abstract: Economic theory suggests that firms can burn (or waste) money as a signal of high quality. Firms can waste money either through pricing low or through a wasteful, conspicuous initial expenditure, but theory does not say when each strategy is optimal. This thesis uses Zagat Survey restaurant data to test empirically this theory through cross- sectional data sets. It finds that as tourism in a city increases, restaurants are more likely to spend money on décor (conspicuous initial investment) than pricing low to signal their quality. Tourism affects the optimal strategy because as tourism increases in a city, repeat business decreases. Royal Afghan Dinner Rice is king in this meal of savory vegetables, aromatic spices, and fork-tender lamb BY ALI SERAJ hen I was growing up in WAfghanistan, dinner was the most important meal of the day. This was the time when the immedi- ate family, and very often other fam- ily members, would gather at my par- ents’ house. I wish to offer thanks to all those who offered dining suggestions and evaluations (keep them coming!). This has made the guide better, and longer, than before. It also means the guide has more unvisited places than before. I hope to get to them soon! You also should buy my book An Economist Gets Lunch: New Rules for Everyday Foodies. General remarks Restaurants manifest the spirit of capitalist multiculturalism. Entrepreneurship, international trade and migration, and cultural exchange all come together in these communal eateries. In the last twenty or so years, the Washington D.C. area has become a leader in ethnic restaurants. We lag behind New York City and Los Angeles, but we vie with Chicago and the Bay Area for third place in the United States. In some areas, such as Ethiopian cuisine, we are number one. This guide is intended to help individuals enjoy good food, and keep my favorite places in business. Effective consumer choice improves your eating and, in the long run, improves the quality of available restaurants. The better ethnic restaurants tend to have many of their kind in a given geographic area. Single restaurant representations of a cuisine tend to disappoint. Competition increases quality and lowers prices. The presence of many restaurants of a kind in an area creates a pool of educated consumers, trained workers and chefs, and ingredient supplies - all manifestations of increasing returns to scale. Many of the best ethnic restaurants on this list come from the well-represented cuisines.
