Arif Gurel*, Kasim Yenigun and R. Kadir Pekgokgoz Faculty of Engineering, Harran University, Civil Engineering Department, Osmanbey Campus, 63190, Sanliurfa, Turkey. Accepted 17 September, 2010 The Bozdogan (Valens) aqueduct in Istanbul is one of the most prominent water supply structures inherited from the Byzantine period. The paper investigates the out-of-plane seismic resistance of the aqueduct. The structural system of the aqueduct is composed of a series of piers connected to each other with arches at two tier levels. Taking advantage of the structural periodicity, only one pier of the highest part of the aqueduct is considered for the analysis instead of the whole structure. This pier is modelled as a cantilever prismatic element subjected to gravity load and increasing lateral load representing out-of-plane seismic loading. It is assumed that the pier is made of a no-tension material, with a linear stress-strain relationship in compression, and has infinite compression strength. To accomplish the solution, an efficient numerical model and solution procedure developed by La Mendola and Papia for investigating the stability of masonry piers under their own weight and an eccentric top load, is utilised and adapted to the problem at hand. The analysis showed that, although, the aqueduct can withstand out-of-plane earthquake ground motions of medium size and usually encountered periods, it is vulnerable to the ones containing long-period pulses. -

This page intentionally left blank Murder in Aubagne Lynching, Law, and Justice during the French Revolution This is a study of factions, lynching, murder, terror, and counterterror during the French Revolution. It examines factionalism in small towns like Aubagne near Marseille, and how this produced the murders and prison massacres of 1795–1798. Another major theme is the conver- gence of lynching from below with official terror from above. Although the Terror may have been designed to solve a national emergency in the spring of 1793, in southern France it permitted one faction to con- tinue a struggle against its enemies, a struggle that had begun earlier over local issues like taxation and governance. This study uses the tech- niques of microhistory to tell the story of the small town of Aubagne. It then extends the scope to places nearby like Marseille, Arles, and Aix-en-Provence. Along the way, it illuminates familiar topics like the activity of clubs and revolutionary tribunals and then explores largely unexamined areas like lynching, the sociology of factions, the emer- gence of theories of violent fraternal democracy, and the nature of the White Terror. D. M. G. Sutherland received his M.A. from the University of Sussex and his Ph.D. from the University of London. He is currently professor of history at the University of Maryland, College Park. He is the author of The Chouans: The Social Origins of Popular Counterrevolution in Upper Brittany, 1770–1796 (1982), France, 1789–1815: Revolution and Counterrevolution (1985), and The French Revolution, 1770– 1815: The Quest for a Civic Order (2003) as well as numerous scholarly articles. -

Jennifer Rushworth Petrarch’s French Fortunes: negotiating the relationship between poet, place, and identity in the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries This article reconsiders Petrarch’s French afterlife by juxtaposing a time of long-recognised Petrarchism — the sixteenth century — with a less familiar and more modern Petrarchist age, the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Of particular interest is how French writers from both periods understand and represent Petrarch’s associations with place. This variously proposed, geographically defined identity is in turn regional (Tuscan/Provençal) and national (Italian/French), located by river (Arno/Sorgue) and city (Florence/Avignon). I argue that sixteenth-century poets stress Petrarch’s foreignness, thereby keeping him at a safe distance, whereas later writers embrace Petrarch as French, drawing the poet closer to (their) home. The medieval Italian poet Francesco Petrarca (known in English as Petrarch, in French as Pétrarque) is the author of many works in Latin and in Italian, in poetry and in prose (for the most complete and accessible account, see Kirkham and Maggi). Since the sixteenth century, however, his fame has resided in one particular vernacular form: the sonnet. In his poetic collection Rerum vulgarium fragmenta, more commonly and simply known as the Canzoniere, 317 of the total 366 are sonnets. These poems reflect on the experience of love and later of grief, centred on the poet’s beloved Laura, and have been so often imitated by later poets as to have given rise to a poetic movement named after the poet: Petrarchism. In the words of Jonathan Culler, “Petrarch’s Canzoniere established a grammar for the European love lyric: a set of tropes, images, oppositions (fire and ice), and typical scenarios that permitted generations of poets throughout Europe to exercise their ingenuity in the construction of love sonnets” (69).
