The vote was widely regarded as a rubber-stamping exercise. Two delegates voted against the change and three abstained, out of 2,964 votes. China had imposed a two-term limit on its president since the 1990s. But Mr Xi, who would have been due to step down in 2023, defied the tradition of presenting a potential successor during October's Communist Party Congress. After five years, Xi Jinping is tightening his grip on power. How did an unassuming official come to embody China's destiny? The US announced plans to impose tariffs on up to $60bn on Chinese imports and limit the country's investment in the US. China is considering imposing tariffs on $3bn worth of US products in retaliation to new tariffs announced by US President Donald Trump.

  • ISU World Cup Short Track Speed Skating – Day 2
December 8, 2019 Shanghai, China ISU World Cup Short Track Speed Skating – Day 2 Speed queen Kim Boutin again proved why she is the skater to beat over Short Track’s shortest and wildest distance, claiming her fourth successive 500m gold on day two of the ISU World Cup in Shanghai. Such is Boutin’s raw speed over 500m this season, the Canadian could even afford to be slightly below par in China, taking the gold just ahead of Netherland’s Suzanne Schulting and Italy’s Martina Valcepina despite a performance she later described as below her best. “I’m focusing a lot on my technique and I felt my last two laps today were really bad, so I need to work on that,” she said. “I still feel like I have a lot of things to learn, and maybe that’s why I’m continuing to do well. It was the first time I’ve skated against these particular girls in a final, so it was interesting to see how they race.” Boutin is now the pre-eminent skater in Canada’s women’s team following the retirement of Marianne St Gelais, but it was not long ago she considered quitting the sport to pursue a career in children’s education. But while she still has ambitions in that field, it could be a while yet before she hangs up her skates for good. “Over the summer I questioned myself a lot,” she said. “But we changed our training a little bit to make sure I keep going to work on my skills, which helped.

MP Yousef Al-Fadhalah said on his Twitter account that he will file to grill the prime minister on March 5 if the government allows Health Minister Jamal Al-Harbi to quit, while leaving “suspected corrupt senior bureaucrats” in their positions. The lawmaker said that he had learned that Harbi offered his resignation on Monday during the Cabinet meeting after his demand to sack the undersecretary and a number of senior officials was not accepted by the Cabinet. The controversy over the health minister has been growing even before the November election, after reports that the cost of sending Kuwaitis for treatment abroad skyrocketed to new highs. Some MPs put it at as high as KD 750 million last year. Opposition MPs have alleged that a majority of those sent for treatment abroad were in fact not patients but sent on what they described as “medical tourism or politi- cal medication”, under which thousands of fake patients were sent abroad to appease certain MPs.

  • Sports, Instagram, and Conflict Talk in Englishes
DOI: 10.1111/weng.12449 PAPER Sports, Instagram, and conflict talk in Englishes Jamie Shinhee Lee University of Michigan-Dearborn, Michigan, USA Abstract Correspondence This study examines conflict talk and ‘othering discourse’ on Insta- Jamie Shinhee Lee, College of Arts, Sciences, gram involving the 2018 Winter Olympics hosted in Pyeongchang, and Letters, University of Michigan-Dearborn, South Korea. The disqualification of highly anticipated medalists in Michigan, USA. Email: [email protected] short track speed skating events elicited heated online arguments between Korean and Chinese sports fans. A content analysis of antagonistic texts featuring anti-Korea and anti-China posts reveals that ‘othering’ practices are predominantly performed by: (1) mak- ing reference to seemingly irrelevant details; (2) evoking stereotyp- ical images of a race and/or a nation; and (3) utilizing overtly offen- sive language or transgressive language. Drawing upon linguistic strategies of encoding ‘us’ vs. ‘them’ dichotomies reported in earlier research, this study shows that explicit disparagement, disapprov- ing representation of the other, stereotyping, and overgeneralization are readily utilized by both parties, who also occasionally engage in verbal reconciliation through lexical and syntactic mirroring. 1 INTRODUCTION Sports are a significant part of recreation and popular culture and have become important social activities for many who enjoy them as players and spectators. Sports are not just physical activities. Linguistic expressions used in sports have influenced our everyday vocabulary. However, linguistics has not paid much attention to sports with the excep- tion of a few studies (Caldwell, Walsh, Vine, & Jureidini, 2017; Dreyfus & Jones, 2010; Ferguson, 1983; Lavric, Pisek, Skinner, & Stadler, 2008). VIRTUAL RECONSTRUCTION KINEMATICS ON THE START ACTION OF ELITE MALE SHORT TRACK SPEED SKATERS UNDER NEW RULES: A COMPARISON ANALYSIS Jihe Zhou1, Shuai Wang2 Chengdu Sport Institute, Chengdu, China1,2 Short track speed skating has been a traditional advantage project of China. In the 500m competition of short track speed skating, occupying a good position in the starting phase has an important influence on the whole process of the competition, which can make the athlete enter the corner in advance and thus successfully complete the acceleration phase. The International Skating Union (ISU) changed the rules of the start action, and various starting actions emerged. The athlete of National Short Track Speed Skating Team named Wu Dajing (Champion of Men’s 500m in 2016/17 Season) changed his technique of start action; he is the only one who use lateral type start action in National Team. This paper used the three-dimensional video analysis method to analyze kinematic parameters of the start action of Wu Dajing and Canadian athlete Charles Hamelin (who has been using the lateral starting action) at the 500m competition of 2016/17 ISU World Cup in Shanghai. The technical parameters of the start action of Wu Dajing (center of gravity, trunk angle, pedal ice angle, lower limb joint angle, etc.) were better than Charles which shows he has a good learning ability of the new technology. It is recommended in training he should focus on improving the stability of start action. KEYWORDS: shock-track speed skating; starting action; visual reality. INTRODUCTION: 3D Virtual Reality is a comprehensive technology integrating computer, image recognition, graphics and other disciplines.
