ISU Communication 2088 INTERNATIONAL SKATING UNION Communication No. 2088 Helmet Numbers Short Track Speed Skating Season 2017/18 1. Use of Dedicated Helmet Numbers a) The dedicated helmet numbers will be used at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games and at all ISU Events (ISU Championships and ISU World Cup Short Track Competitions), except for the ISU World Junior Short Track Speed Skating Championships where helmet covers will be provided. b) These dedicated helmet numbers are assigned based on the overall results of the 2017 ISU World Short Track Speed Skating Championships, starting with number 1 (one) for the World Short Track Speed Skating Champions Ladies and Men, and continuing with progressive numbering until the last listed Skater. c) For all Skaters that did not participate in the individual races of the 2017 ISU World Short Track Speed Skating Championships, the 1000m overall World Cup Classification of the 2016/17 ISU World Cup Short Track Speed Skating has been taken into account. d) Skaters who did not participate in any ISU World Cup Short Track Competition 2016/17 and/or in the 2017 ISU World Short Track Speed Skating Championships will receive the next available number, after the helmet numbers already assigned, the first time they will participate in an ISU Event during the season 2017/18, and such a skater will keep this assigned helmet number for the rest of the season. e) The black numbers on white surface will be glued as oval stickers of the size of 8 x 14cm (height and length) on the left-hand and right-hand side of the personal helmets and shall not be removed during the whole season. The ISU does not accept responsibility for damages to the design/artwork on the helmet incurred when applying these numbers f) These numbers (stickers) will be provided by the ISU based on the below list at the first ISU Event of the season. For those Skaters not attending the first ISU Event, the number (sticker) will be distributed at the first Event of the season when the Skater is attending. 1 2. MP Yousef Al-Fadhalah said on his Twitter account that he will file to grill the prime minister on March 5 if the government allows Health Minister Jamal Al-Harbi to quit, while leaving “suspected corrupt senior bureaucrats” in their positions. The lawmaker said that he had learned that Harbi offered his resignation on Monday during the Cabinet meeting after his demand to sack the undersecretary and a number of senior officials was not accepted by the Cabinet. The controversy over the health minister has been growing even before the November election, after reports that the cost of sending Kuwaitis for treatment abroad skyrocketed to new highs. Some MPs put it at as high as KD 750 million last year. Opposition MPs have alleged that a majority of those sent for treatment abroad were in fact not patients but sent on what they described as “medical tourism or politi- cal medication”, under which thousands of fake patients were sent abroad to appease certain MPs.

  • Sports, Instagram, and Conflict Talk in Englishes
DOI: 10.1111/weng.12449 PAPER Sports, Instagram, and conflict talk in Englishes Jamie Shinhee Lee University of Michigan-Dearborn, Michigan, USA Abstract Correspondence This study examines conflict talk and ‘othering discourse’ on Insta- Jamie Shinhee Lee, College of Arts, Sciences, gram involving the 2018 Winter Olympics hosted in Pyeongchang, and Letters, University of Michigan-Dearborn, South Korea. The disqualification of highly anticipated medalists in Michigan, USA. Email: [email protected] short track speed skating events elicited heated online arguments between Korean and Chinese sports fans. A content analysis of antagonistic texts featuring anti-Korea and anti-China posts reveals that ‘othering’ practices are predominantly performed by: (1) mak- ing reference to seemingly irrelevant details; (2) evoking stereotyp- ical images of a race and/or a nation; and (3) utilizing overtly offen- sive language or transgressive language. Drawing upon linguistic strategies of encoding ‘us’ vs. ‘them’ dichotomies reported in earlier research, this study shows that explicit disparagement, disapprov- ing representation of the other, stereotyping, and overgeneralization are readily utilized by both parties, who also occasionally engage in verbal reconciliation through lexical and syntactic mirroring. 1 INTRODUCTION Sports are a significant part of recreation and popular culture and have become important social activities for many who enjoy them as players and spectators. Sports are not just physical activities. Linguistic expressions used in sports have influenced our everyday vocabulary. However, linguistics has not paid much attention to sports with the excep- tion of a few studies (Caldwell, Walsh, Vine, & Jureidini, 2017; Dreyfus & Jones, 2010; Ferguson, 1983; Lavric, Pisek, Skinner, & Stadler, 2008).
