PO Box 14003 Mill Creek, WA 98082 Celebrating Founded Our 30th Year In 1983 Volume 30, Issue 2 A News Letter For and About Our Members February 2013 Meet the NW Western Swing Music Society’s Vice-President for 2013 Jerry Seitz It was the fall of 1947, when I returned from a day at school, that I found a violin sitting in its case in my dad's easy chair. It was the last thing I ever expected to see there. I was told that I was going to take violin lessons; and, my grandmother had procured this instrument for me to use. It seems an outfit had hit town, much like in the "Music Man," that famous musical. They were offering group violin lessons at various facilities around Seattle and the "hook" was that the best players were going to play a concert in the HOLLYWOOD BOWL. Within six months they had folded their tents and left town, but they left me hooked on music. The teachers they had hired were local chaps and the one for our group, Mr. Katz, approached a few of the parents and offered private lesson for something like $1.00 an hour. This time I was asked if I wanted to continue and, of course, I was excited at the prospect. The next year I was in the orchestra at Magnolia grade school. I took lessons from Mr. Katz for the next two years. Then, in 1949, my family moved to Richland. There wasn't much of a music program in the grade school but the following year, when I started Jr. -
