(see Lauder01.jpg)] TO THE MEMORY OF MY BELOVED SON CAPTAIN JOHN LAUDER First 8th, Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders Killed in France, December 28, 1916 Oh, there's sometimes I am lonely And I'm weary a' the day To see the face and clasp the hand Of him who is away. The only one God gave me, My one and only joy, My life and love were centered on My one and only boy. I saw him in his infant days Grow up from year to year, That he would some day be a man I never had a fear. His mother watched his every step, 'Twas our united joy To think that he might be one day My one and only boy. When war broke out he buckled on His sword, and said, "Good-bye. For I must do my duty, Dad; Tell Mother not to cry, Tell her that I'll come back again." What happiness and joy! But no, he died for Liberty, My one and only boy.

In this ground-breaking book, Derek B. Scott examines the cultural transfer of operetta from the German stage to Britain and the USA and offers a historical and critical survey of these operettas and their music. In the period 1900–1940, over sixty operettas were produced in the West End, and over seventy on Broadway. A study of these stage works is important for the light they shine on a variety of social topics of the period – from modernity and gender relations to new technology and new media – and these are investigated in the individual chapters. This book is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core at doi.org/10.1017/9781108614306. derek b. scott is Professor of Critical Musicology at the University of Leeds.

  • A Caravan of Culture: Visitors to Emporia, Kansas by Charles E
A Caravan of Culture: Visitors to Emporia, Kansas by Charles E. Webb INTRODUCTION hat do Ulysses S. Grant, "Buffalo Bill" Cody, Susan B. Anthony, Will Rogers, Ethel Barrymore, and Dr. \Verner Von Braun haye in common"? They were W among the hundreds of famous people that have visited EmpOria, Kansas during the past one hundred years. In dividuals and groups of national and international fame, represen ting the arts, seiencl's. education, politics, and entertainment, have pa~sed before Emporia audiences in a century long parade. Since 1879, this formidable array of personalities has provided informa tion and entertainment to Emporia citizens at an average rate of once eaeh fifteen days, The occasional appearanee of a famous personality in a small city may well be considered a matter of historical coineidence. When, however, such visits are numbered in the hundreds, arc fre quent, and persist for a century, it appears reasonable to rank the phenomenon as an important part of that eity's cultural heritage. Emporia, although located in the interior plains, never ae cepted the role of being an isolated community. It seems that the (own's pioneers eonsidered themselves not on the frontier fringi'" of America, but strategically situated near its heart. From the town's beginning, its inhabitants indicated an intention of being informed and participating members of the national and world communities. To better understand why Emporia was able to attract so many distinguished guests, a brief examination of its early development is required. In the formative years of the city's history wc may identify some of the events, attitudes, and preparations Ihat literally set the stage for a procession of renowned visitors.

  • Newsletter 49
CARLTON WARE NEWSLETTER #49 From Ian Harwood & Jerome Wilson June 2010 It has been quite a few months now since we published our last Newsletter and much has happened since then. On January 1 of this year, when we could see that we had a few days break in the winter weather, we hit the road south out of Calgary, on our way to Florida! We had a house rented for January 15, so we had 2 weeks to get there. Our plan was to drive south as fast as we could, to get below the snow belt, and then turn east and drive across the U.S.A., stopping here and there on the way – for antique shopping, of course! Our fast drive south, out of the winter weather, did not give us time for any shopping. Our first day’s drive got us out of Canada and into Montana and a stop for the night in Great Falls. The second day we crossed into Idaho and then into Utah and stopped for the second night in Ogden. The third day saw us drive south of the snow line in southern Utah, briefly cross into the top corner of Arizona and then into Nevada, where we stopped for a couple of days on the Las Vegas strip. You can always find a cheap, first class room in Vegas – just find an hotel that isn’t holding a convention and the best rooms can be had for as little as $45 a night. We stayed at Bally’s, right in the middle of it all.

THE GILBERT AND SULLIVAN OPERETTAS ON 78s: COMPLETE SETS AND ABRIDGEMENTS, 1906. 1950 John W. N. Francis In 1877 Richard D'Oyly Carte commissioned Gilbert and Sullivan to write The Sorcerer, and organized an ensemble of singer-actors to perform the new piece under the author's artistic direction. Also in 1877, of course, Charles Cros and Thomas Edison invented sound recording. More than a century later both the music and the medium continue to flourish, and indeed they have come together often and success fully--notably in the many complete versions by the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, which have set standards of style and ensemble for generations of devotees and amateur performers. This discography documents the complete recordings of the Gilbert and Sullivan operettas made at 78 rpm, not only by the D'Oyly Carte company or under its aegis, but also by others with lesser claims to authenticity. Also included are substantial abridgements and sets of excerpts--groups of five or more sides made at essentially the same time and place and with the same performers, whether or not they were ever issued collectively or with consecutive numbering. The following comments set the recordings in the context of the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company's history. THE ACOUSTIC RECORDINGS When Richard D'Oyly Carte died in 1901, his widow Helen assumed manage ment of the businesses he had built, including the Savoy Theatre in London and the opera company, which was then on tour. In 1906 she brought the troupe back to the Savoy for a repertory season of Gilbert and Sullivan, its very first.
