Esteemed Council Members,

I wish to applaud council members Harris-Dawson, Price, Ridley-Thomas, and Rodriguez for supporting the Resolution in SUPPORT of HR 1280, The Justice in Policing Act of 2021. I am pleased to see the council will be considering the item on Tuesday, May 25th, the one-year anniversary of Floyd’s death. I wanted to express my unwavering SUPPORT for passage of this Resolution.

In the wake of George Floyd’s death last year, my Sunland-Tujunga community experienced a profound surge in racist, hate-group activity. Proud boys, SFV Peckerwoods, and 3-percenters were unabashedly demonstrating on our streets under the guise of “blue lives matter.” In response, I helped ABRA Foothills, who mounted counter-protests in support of and an equitable justice system for all. We were met with hostility, violence, and threats—including from law enforcement. HR 1280 would enhance existing mechanisms for holding law enforcement accountable for their actions AND it would establish a National Registry for the frst time in United States history. This bill takes the moment of accountability from Derek Chauvin’s verdict and extends it into a potentially just future.

When 925 Angelenos have been killed by law enforcement since the year 2000, only 662 of those cases have been investigated by prosecutors, and only four ofcers have been prosecuted; it is time for a better system. People of color are being shot by police at a disproportionately high rate in urban centers across the country, and Los Angeles is no exception. Though Black people comprise only 10% of our population, they account for 25% of deaths by police. Black and Latino men, together, comprise 80% of all police killings. This is unacceptable.

The City Council’s express support of HR 1280 means support for increased accountability. It means no more “.” It gives people greater recourse in civil trials, and it promises mechanisms to counter racial profling, implicit bias, and misuse of force among police. As such, I urge all council members to vote YES on this resolution and pass it without delay.

Yours Sincerely,

Judith Quiñones Communication from Public

With fear that one of my parents may get killed at any time? at this age im not suppose to be worried about that. instead im suppose to be feeling safe that we police men saving us.It not fare that many family dont get justice.many police have never gotten charge with any degree of murder or have never served in jail.they take a police men word but not the family who have evidence? this is unacceptable.these day there is no such thing as "justice" anymore.but you can change that by passing the bill. if they is one thing that i want in the future it is to justice for my people again.
