I present a case study on a financially troubled, partially complete village reconstruc- tion project in Shandong. Villagers outside the leadership were minimally involved in project planning, and the village leadership put pressure on villagers to move. How- ever, the pressure to move was not due to an absence of formal property rights for villagers; reluctant villagers agreed to move because they could not afford to offend the village government.

  • SHUMAI (SUI MAI) Through Annie's Window
SHUMAI (SUI MAI) Through Annie’s Window Shumai, or Sui Mai, are steamed pork dumplings that are a favorite at dim sum restaurants. Growing up, my family would have dim sum on Sunday and I was always excited when the cart arrived at our table. The first few items I would pull are - shumai, steamed pork dumplings, har gow (shrimp dumplings), and chicken feed (yes, you read that correctly). All very delicious and must try! If you are heading to dim sum for the first time, I recommend ordering a couple of the shumai. They are super juicy and a great combination of pork and shrimp. Compared to other dumplings in Chinese cuisine, shumai are relatively easy to make. You just need to prepare the filling, stuff the dumplings, and steam. So let’s get stuffing, wrapping, and make some shumai. Prep Time: 1 hour Cook Time: 15 minutes Total Time: 1 hour and 15 minutes Yield: 22-24 shumai Equipment: bamboo steamer and liner papers for bamboo steamer INGREDIENTS ½ lb 80% lean ground pork 1 ½ tbsp tapioca starch ¼ cup water 1 ½ tbsp cooking oil ½ tbsp sesame oil ½ lb chopped shrimp ⅔ cup chopped shiitake mushroom ½ cup chopped water chestnuts 2 tbsp minced ginger ¼ cup sliced green onions 2 tbsp oyster sauce 2 tbsp granulated sugar 2 tsp kosher salt 2 tbsp white pepper ¼ cup of fish roe 22 - 24 thin round yellow dumpling wrappers INSTRUCTIONS 1. Place your ground pork in a large mixing bowl. Add tapioca starch and water to the bowl and start mixing. Keep stirring until your pork turns to a paste-like texture.

  • Shanghai, China Overview Introduction
Shanghai, China Overview Introduction The name Shanghai still conjures images of romance, mystery and adventure, but for decades it was an austere backwater. After the success of Mao Zedong's communist revolution in 1949, the authorities clamped down hard on Shanghai, castigating China's second city for its prewar status as a playground of gangsters and colonial adventurers. And so it was. In its heyday, the 1920s and '30s, cosmopolitan Shanghai was a dynamic melting pot for people, ideas and money from all over the planet. Business boomed, fortunes were made, and everything seemed possible. It was a time of breakneck industrial progress, swaggering confidence and smoky jazz venues. Thanks to economic reforms implemented in the 1980s by Deng Xiaoping, Shanghai's commercial potential has reemerged and is flourishing again. Stand today on the historic Bund and look across the Huangpu River. The soaring 1,614-ft/492-m Shanghai World Financial Center tower looms over the ambitious skyline of the Pudong financial district. Alongside it are other key landmarks: the glittering, 88- story Jinmao Building; the rocket-shaped Oriental Pearl TV Tower; and the Shanghai Stock Exchange. The 128-story Shanghai Tower is the tallest building in China (and, after the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the second-tallest in the world). Glass-and-steel skyscrapers reach for the clouds, Mercedes sedans cruise the neon-lit streets, luxury- brand boutiques stock all the stylish trappings available in New York, and the restaurant, bar and clubbing scene pulsates with an energy all its own. Perhaps more than any other city in Asia, Shanghai has the confidence and sheer determination to forge a glittering future as one of the world's most important commercial centers.

  • 2020 Conservation Outlook Assessment
IUCN World Heritage Outlook: https://worldheritageoutlook.iucn.org/ China Danxia - 2020 Conservation Outlook Assessment China Danxia 2020 Conservation Outlook Assessment SITE INFORMATION Country: China Inscribed in: 2010 Criteria: (vii) (viii) China Danxia is the name given in China to landscapes developed on continental red terrigenous sedimentary beds influenced by endogenous forces (including uplift) and exogenous forces (including weathering and erosion). The inscribed site comprises six areas found in the sub-tropical zone of south- west China. They are characterized by spectacular red cliffs and a range of erosional landforms, including dramatic natural pillars, towers, ravines, valleys and waterfalls. These rugged landscapes have helped to conserve sub-tropical broad-leaved evergreen forests, and host many species of flora and fauna, about 400 of which are considered rare or threatened. © UNESCO SUMMARY 2020 Conservation Outlook Finalised on 01 Dec 2020 GOOD The conservation outlook for the property is generally good. The current state of the values of the property and the trend are respectively satisfactory and stable. The serial nature of the property, with its six widely separated component parts, is complex but the authorities must be commended on the degree to which they have provided a uniformly consistent legal and institutional framework for protection and management. Existing staff and other management resources appear to be adequate in coping with current factors affecting the property and low levels of threat. Protection of the property is assisted by its remoteness from development and the robust character of the geological landscape. Effective protection and management of the natural forest vegetation and biodiversity contributes significantly to the scenic and aesthetic qualities and to the on-going land forming processes.
