    Students still mum about Shawn Reineke’s death: An unsolved homicide from 1984 at the University of Saskatchewan by David Scharf A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master in Journalism Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2016 David Scharf Abstract On September 29, 1984, 18-year-old Shawn Reineke was dropped down the garbage chute of a student residence at the University of Saskatchewan. Shawn suffered horrific injuries. He died the next day. This work provides a biography of Shawn and historical context to his death. This work reconstructs the night of September 28/29, 1984, and the Saskatoon Police Service investigation into Shawn’s death. This work concludes with an analysis of why nobody has ever been charged, as well as an account of what may have happened between 3:30 and 3:45 a.m., September 29, 1984. This work is based on: an extensive review of sworn testimony at the Saskatchewan Coroner’s Inquest into the Death of Shawn Reineke, February 4 – 6; a review of contemporaneous newspaper reports, television broadcasts, and archival photographs; contemporary interviews with Shawn’s family, friends, and acquaintances; and contemporary interviews with students and police officers who were present in 1984. ii Preface and acknowledgements Sometime in November 2015, while chatting with my Carleton University journalism colleague Kelly Hobson, the conversation turned to university residences. For two decades, since the opening of the Canadian Light Source (CLS), Saskatoon has prided itself as being a science hub for Canada, using the slogan “Saskatoon Shines” to recognize the contribution of science to the community. The CLS was built in Saskatoon because of the existence of the Saskatchewan Accelerator Laboratory (SAL), and the expertise and infrastructure it brought. Dr. Katz, as founder and first Director of SAL, is directly responsible for that legacy. Dr. Katz received his Ph.D. with distinction from the California Institute of Technology. His academic career was interrupted by World War II; during its latter years, he worked as a research engineer with the Westinghouse Electric Company in Pittsburgh designing radar equipment to measure the muzzle velocity of shells from large guns on US war ships. He received a patent along with another colleague from Westinghouse for Beacon Radar System (US Patent #2,656,530). In 1946, Dr. Katz joined the team of Drs. Harrington, Haslam and Johns to build a Betatron research and cancer treatment facility in the Physics department at the University of Saskatchewan. It opened in 1948 and the first patient received cancer therapy using the Betatron, on 29 March 1949 – beginning the world’s first concerted clinical use of the Betatron.

Morton’s History of the University of Saskatchewan’s First 25 Years By Arthur Morton Introduction and annotations by Cheryl Avery and Patrick Hayes The following illustrated essay is a faithful reproduction of a slide show and lecture given by history professor Arthur Silver Morton on the University of Saskatchewan’s first twenty-five years. It was given between 1934 and 1937, the result of a request to Morton by the Alumni Association, although the audience it was directed toward, or the number of times it may have been presented, is not known. The text, found as an annotated typescript among Morton’s papers, has been unaltered; and from Morton’s notes it was possible to identify and use the same images as in the original presentation, with very few exceptions. The result is an interesting, informal and unique perspective on the University’s first quarter century and an assessment of its achievements and role within the province. Arthur Silver Morton joined the University 1914 as professor of history, with a concurrent appointment as Librarian. He remained with the University and was active on campus even after his 1940 retirement; by the time of this lecture, he had been on faculty for just over two decades. He certainly knew many of the people – students, staff, faculty colleagues, and in some cases government officials – about whom he spoke. In some respects it would therefore be easy to dismiss him as an apologist for the institution. But he was, also, a professional historian, able to sift through and analyse evidence; many of the points he makes were extremely relevant to the time.
