These young readers were not content merely to inhabit, as individual readers, the spaces created for them by professional publishers, editors, and authors in an expanding children’s market in the late nineteenth century, nor did they limit their interactions to those expected and encouraged by editors in the pages of children’s magazines and weekly story papers. These young amateur journalists sought to establish and expand peer social and information networks through and beyond the boundaries of the spaces created for them in children’s periodicals. This dissertation examines how these amateur print networks were established and maintained, as well as their multifaceted relationships with children’s magazines and weekly story papers. It also explores these social and information networks, along with amateur practices regarding documentation, dissemination, collection, and preservation, as indicators of a late nineteenth century youth information culture. ii To my parents, who set me on this path. The fellowship not only allowed me to do the bulk of my research at the AAS with the help of its knowledgeable and helpful curators and staff, but it also gave me the opportunity to work in residence with scholars who inspired and encouraged me daily. Dennis Laurie, Reference Specialist for Newspapers at the AAS, saved me countless hours of searching for needles in a very large haystack by generously sharing his knowledge of the vast amateur newspaper collection, and for that I am so grateful. I would also like to thank Laura Wasowicz, Curator of Children’s Literature at the AAS, and the participants of the AAS 2015 Summer Seminar in the History of the Book, “Reading Children,” led by Dr. Patricia Crain and Dr. Martin Brückner, for a week of focused exploration and challenging discussion around the question of what it meant to be a child reader before 1900. Anne Woodrum, Special Collections Librarian at Brandeis University, sent me images of pages of Munro’s Girls and Boys of America, which contributed to my understanding of connections between amateurdom and weekly story papers in this period. Though I was unable to make a research trip for the dissertation to the Cotsen Children’s Library at Princeton University, I also am grateful for the assistance of Andrea Immel, Curator, and Ian Dooley, Curatorial Assistant, who rapidly responded to my query about their collection of American story papers. Within the week, Dooley made a list of the titles in the collection available through the library catalog, which was extremely helpful.     FELIX OCTAVIUS CARR DARLEY The Book Illustrations of Felix Octavius Carr Darley BY THEODORE BOLTON AFTER viewing the book illustrations of Darley in the ix. order of their production and comparing them with the work of his contemporaries, one sees that he reached his artistic maturity when he was about twenty-one-years-old, maintained a high standard of excellence over many years, and dominated the field of graphic arts during the early half of his career. He always designed his little figure composi- tions in a style appropriate to the text for which they were intended; and used difïerent techniques to gain the best results in wood engraving, steel engraving, lithography, and the photomechanical processes. In working for reproduction he achieved an unusual technical mastery, but his ability as a technician would not have assured the survival of his work had he not also been an artist. He ranks with the ablest figure composers of his time, and his book illustrations are placed on the shelves with those of Abbey, Pyle, Frost, and Remington. Both his parents came from England. His father, John Darley, at one time a comedian, and his mother, Eleanora Westray, a popular actress, were living in the United States, and John Darley was serving as a lieutenant in the United States Marines when they were married in 1800. It seeks to answer two questions: first, how and why individuals/media makers constructed various identities of Funston during his life? Secondly, this work seeks to answer how and why individuals harnessed these identities after Funston’s death to support various causes? I argue that Frederick Funston became part of a larger narrative about imperialism, and that the conflict between imperialists and anti-imperialists formed the basis for two competing memories of Funston over the next century. Funston started his career as an explorer and used the local newspapers to gain acceptance for his chosen profession. Funston became an entrepreneur of imperialism. He promoted the idea of expansionism and with it he sold himself and his story. His early writings reflect the use of racial and gendered language to pit the “civilized” against the “savage.” Funston used the language of white civilized manhood to demonstrate his superiority over “other” non-white groups.

Walt Whitman’s Voice Larry Don Griffin Abstract Provides a history of how Whitman’s voice was described by those who heard it, examining statements by W. D. O’Connor, Frank Harris, Thomas P. Harned, Richard M. Bucke, Horace Traubel, Hamlin Garland, John Johnston, and Harrsion S. Morris; describes the author’s own response to the recently rediscovered recording of what may be Whitman reading “America.” WALT WHITMAN'S VOICE LARRY D. GRIFFIN SEVERAL WHITMAN BIOGRAPHERS HAVE INDICATED that Whitman's "high­ pitched voice," perhaps the result of his stroke, may have curbed his success as an orator. l Attestations to the quality of Whitman's voice prior to 1855 make no mention of a high-pitched voice. As early as 1844 Whitman considered purchasing a piano, and of Whitman's voice at this time Joseph Rubin writes in The Historic Whitman: "Blessed with a sensitive ear and a good voice, Whitman hoped to save enough money to buy a piano and indulge his passion for music.,,2 Besides declaiming Shakespeare on the shores of Paumanok on outings with friends in the 1840s, Whitman later declaimed from Broadway omnibuses and the Brooklyn Ferry in the 1850s. In "Omnibus Jaunts and Drivers" in Specimen Days, Whitman recalls such practices: I suppose the critics will laugh heartily, but the influence of those Broadway omnibus jaunts and drivers and declamations and escapades undoubtedly entered into the gestation of "Leaves of Grass.,,3 A ferry hand, Thomas A.
