DICK, MARRISSA R., Ph.D. An African American Woman’s Educational Journey: Pragmatic and Pedagogical Practices of Fantasy. (2012) Directed by Dr. Kathleen Casey. 157 pp. My dissertation is an autobiographical narrative about my journey through a non-pedagogical and oppressive school system, to an oppressive marriage, and back to a graduate program that, in my opinion, epitomizes the essence of pedagogy. I explain how fantasy theory has situated itself in my life as a metacognitive tool in order to save my conscious reality as it guided me towards transcendence. I address my introduction to fantasy as a child inside of the classroom. I talk about mis-educative experiences inside of the classroom and provide examples of those experiences. I discuss microaggression and how it was played out during my earlier educational years as well as describe my experience with internal-microaggression during my master’s program. I explain how fantasy returned to my life during my marriage and divorce. I also discuss my relationship with the Black church utilizing soul therapy. I talk about my African American contemporary Christian romance novels and how writing them allowed me to be reflective on my past relationships so I could still have faith and hope of love in my future. I conclude my dissertation by providing examples of my teaching pedagogy and my inspirations for those reading my dissertation. In essence this dissertation is a qualitative culmination of past recollections, current reflections, and future endeavors as I continue to learn and transcend through my lifelong journey with education. A SPACE FOR CONNECTION: A PHENOMENOLOGICAL INQUIRY ON MUSIC LISTENING AS LEISURE by JOSEPH ALFRED PATE IV (Under the Direction of Corey W. Johnson) ABSTRACT This polyvocal text leveraged Post-Intentional Phenomenology (Vagle, 2010) to trouble, open up, and complexify understanding of the lived leisure experience (Parry & Johnson, 2006) of connection with and through music listening. Music listening was foregrounded as one horizon within the aural soundscape that affords deeply meaningful and significant experiences for many. Past scholarship within the Leisure Studies literature has primarily attended to the impact and relevancy of music in the lives of adolescents. This study focused on engagement with music of five adults, accessing phenomenology as both a philosophical and methodological lens to look along (Lewis, 1990) this lived-experience. Using multiple voices and styles of representation, this polyvocal work challenged traditional ways of knowing by inviting listening, music, and voice to serve as additional data embedded throughout its discursive representation. Accessing Bachelard‟s (1990) phenomenology of the resonation-reverberation doublet revealed five partial, fleeting, and tentative manifestations (Vagle, 2010) of this lived leisure experience, which included: Getting Lost: Felt Resonation and Embodiment; I‟m Open: Openness, Receptivity, and Enchantment; Serendipitous Moments; The Found Mirror: Oh There You Are; and Cairns and Echoes: The Lustering Potency of Song. Ultimately, music appeared to speak to so as to speak for participants, providing musical affirmation and sustenance throughout their lives. INDEX WORDS: Music, Listening, Leisure, Post-Intentional Phenomenology, Polyvocal Text A SPACE FOR CONNECTION: A PHENOMENOLOGICAL INQUIRY ON MUSIC LISTENING AS LEISURE by JOSEPH ALFRED PATE IV B.

White Grass Stories from the National Trust for Historic Preservation Web Site - Downloaded May 2014 “Share Your Story” The entries below are from a web site established by the National Trust for Historical Preservation as a supplement to its fund raising efforts to support the rehabilitation work at the historic White Grass Ranch, Grand Teton National Park, Moose, Wyoming. Called “Share Your Story,” former dudes, wranglers and special friends of the dude ranch era (1913-1985) were invited to enter a story/post a story on the Trust’s web site. The site was taken down in 2014 after the Trust closed its fundraising efforts having met its goal of over $970,000. Through an agreement with the National Trust, the White Grass Heritage Project is able to archive and republish those stories, and preserve an important part of White Grass Ranch history. NOTE: When the individual stories below were first posted on the National Trust’s web site, some posting dates were inaccurate due to a computer glitch. Information contained in “White Grass Ranch: A Compilation of Stories from the National Trust for Historic Preservation Website and More, 2014” created by Rachel Terhune was used to correct noted inaccuracies. Terhune’s booklet is archived in the Grand Teton National Park and the Jackson Hole Historical Society and Museum in Jackson, Wyoming Edited by Roger Butterbaugh, Seasonal Caretaker at White Grass Ranch/National Park Service Volunteer; Coordinator of the White Grass Heritage Project which aims to collect oral histories, historical photos, artifacts and more for archival purposes at the Grand Teton National Park and the Jackson Hole Historical Society and Museum -- March 25, 2016.

  • This Is Not Who We Are? DESCRIPTION: Dialogue with Ian Smith, Michael Witmore, and Kathleen Lynch Thursday, April 22, 2021
Critical Race Conversations, a Folger Institute Fiftieth Anniversary Project Supported by the Mellon Initiative in Collaborative Research This is not who we are? DESCRIPTION: Dialogue with Ian Smith, Michael Witmore, and Kathleen Lynch Thursday, April 22, 2021 KATHLEEN LYNCH: Welcome, everyone. Welcome to Critical Race Conversations. This is a series of monthly conversations hosted by the Folger Institute and funded by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. We’re delighted on this monthly basis to gather so many friends old and new for these conversations, which we recognize as addressing some of our most urgently pressing social issues today. There was an overdue reckoning with ongoing social and racial injustice last summer that coincided with the institute’s 50th anniversary. KATHLEEN: At that time, we made a commitment to draw on work and all of our areas of programming to highlight the need for a sustained and collective examination of the enduring legacies of premodern racialized thinking and racism. Our speakers in our monthly sessions have been acknowledging deeper and more complex roots to enduring social challenges, and they’re conducting more inclusive investigations of our contested pasts. All of this with the goal of creating a more just academy and contributing to a more just society. KATHLEEN: The institute is providing the framework and the platform. But, as is our practice, we turn to experts in fields across disciplines and career stages to lead discussions, in this case, about Critical Race studies from their own experience and expertise. If you’ve been with us throughout this monthly series, you know we’ve been ranging around a number of fields of studies with some regular returns to Shakespeare studies.

The Fashion from the Streets: Neue Deutsche Welle and the Federal Republic of Germany in the 1970s and 80s By Chris Wendt A thesis submitted to Sonoma State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in History Committee Members: Dr. Stephen Bittner, Chair Dr. Steven Estes Dr. Margaret Miller December 14th, 2016 Copyright 2016 By Chris Wendt ii Authorization for Reproduction of Master’s Thesis I grant permission for the print or digital reproduction of this thesis [project] in its entirety, without further authorization from me, on the condition that the person or agency requesting reproduction absorb the cost and provide proper acknowledgment of authorship. DATE: 12/14/2016 Chris Wendt Name iii The Fashion from the Streets: Neue Deutsche Welle and the Federal Republic of Germany in the 1970s and 80s Thesis by Chris Wendt Abstract Purpose of the Study: This study represents a comprehensive and original cultural examination of Neue Deutsche Welle music (German New Wave) as a sonic avant-garde of West Germany between 1979-1984. Originating out of the organic punk scene cultivated in Düsseldorf in 1977, NDW was an ideological evolution of the tenets of West German punk but also a subcultural result of the specter of fascism, the violent student protests of the 68er movement, and the terrorism of the Red Army Faction in the 1970s. From this a unique punk subculture was developed in Düsseldorf which combined art, fashion, and music with the punk ideals of “do-it-yourself”, Anderssein/otherness, and authenticity, to create what became an avant-garde predicated on sonic and fashionable experimentation and which aimed to create a new cultural identity for a despondent German youth in the face of an embarrassing national history and an uneasy socio-political and economic climate in the Federal Republic at the time.
