OPEN LETTER TO RESIDENTS of OKLAHOMA Dear Professional Bull Riders, Inc. (PBR): Attention Randy Bernard~CEO of PBR and Ty Murray~PBR President I am writing to urge you to eliminate the presence of ALL tobacco sponsors and messages during your bull riding events. Professional bull riding has moved into ranks of world-class sports and the eyes of the public are now fixed on the PBR athletes, who serve as heroes and role models for youth across the United States. Simply put, children emulate the actions of adults they admire, copying their habits-both good and bad. I have been involved with the sport of bull riding for over 20 years as an announcer, broadcast and print journalist, radio personality, spectator and, most recently, as a spokesperson for Buck Tobacco Sponsorship’s National Tobacco-Free Rodeo Project. The Buck Tobacco program targets rodeos and bull riding events throughout the country with requests to eliminate tobacco sponsorship. (www.bucktobacco.org). I have visited with over 150,000 children across the country to talk with them about the sport of bull riding, along with the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle. Tobacco is not part of a healthy lifestyle and should not be part of bull riding. Numerous churches, schools and community organizations across the country are joining me in the pledge to support a tobacco-free PBR. Many of these individuals regularly attend PBR events with their children, and are disturbed by the tobacco messaging that is reaching kids at your otherwise family-friendly event. Would you encourage or allow your child to use tobacco products? Medical research chronicles the increased likelihood of heart disease and cancer as a result of the use of tobacco products. -

This course falls into social analysis and visual and performance arts analysis and practice because it shows how punk, as a subculture, has influenced alternative economic practices, led to political mobilization, and challenged social norms. This course situates the activity of listening to punk music in its broader cultural ideologies, such as the DIY (do-it-yourself) ideal, which includes nontraditional musical pedagogy and composition, cooperatively owned performance venues, and underground distribution and circulation practices. Students learn to analyze punk subculture as an alternative social formation and how punk productions confront and are times co-opted by capitalistic logic and normative economic, political and social arrangements. 3. Raoul Walsh to Attend Opening of Retrospective Tribute at Museum
The Museum of Modern Art jl west 53 Street, New York, N.Y. 10019 Tel. 956-6100 Cable: Modernart NO. 34 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE RAOUL WALSH TO ATTEND OPENING OF RETROSPECTIVE TRIBUTE AT MUSEUM Raoul Walsh, 87-year-old film director whose career in motion pictures spanned more than five decades, will come to New York for the opening of a three-month retrospective of his films beginning Thursday, April 18, at The Museum of Modern Art. In a rare public appearance Mr. Walsh will attend the 8 pm screening of "Gentleman Jim," his 1942 film in which Errol Flynn portrays the boxing champion James J. Corbett. One of the giants of American filmdom, Walsh has worked in all genres — Westerns, gangster films, war pictures, adventure films, musicals — and with many of Hollywood's greatest stars — Victor McLaglen, Gloria Swanson, Douglas Fair banks, Mae West, James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, Marlene Dietrich and Edward G. Robinson, to name just a few. It is ultimately as a director of action pictures that Walsh is best known and a growing body of critical opinion places him in the front rank with directors like Ford, Hawks, Curtiz and Wellman. Richard Schickel has called him "one of the best action directors...we've ever had" and British film critic Julian Fox has written: "Raoul Walsh, more than any other legendary figure from Hollywood's golden past, has truly lived up to the early cinema's reputation for 'action all the way'...." Walsh's penchant for action is not surprising considering he began his career more than 60 years ago as a stunt-rider in early "westerns" filmed in the New Jersey hills. -

To celebrate that year’s 75th anniversary, we look back at directors creating some of the high points—from Mounument Valley to Kansas.
