Farnborough, July 14, 2014 ATR: 144 firm orders, new sales record for the first half of the year The aircraft manufacturer has also taken options for 112 additional aircraft At the Farnborough Airshow, the turboprop aircraft manufacturer ATR this morning announced that it has taken firm orders for 144 aircraft (119 ATR 72-600 and 25 ATR 42-600), with options for 112 additional aircraft, since the beginning of the year. This year's contracts, of which many will be revealed during the week of the show, represent a total value of over US$3.45 billion (US$6 billion including options). These sales represent 150% compared to the total sales for the year 2013. They will allow ATR to further strengthen its leading position on the market for regional aviation, and thus confirm the predominance of turboprop aircraft, and particularly those of ATR, over short distances. Sales for the first half of the year highlight the appeal of the ATR '-600's for regional companies and the leasing company community, attracted by the economic and environmental performance of the aircraft, their technical reliability and their high standard of comfort. This year, the ATR '-600's have also passed the symbolic mark of 500 firm orders since their launch at the end of 2007. ATR's backlog currently stands at 325 aircraft to be delivered in the coming years, a new record, representing a value of US$8 billion. On the back of this sales performance in the first half the year, ATR has increased its end of 2013 backlog by around 45%, seeing production ensured for almost 4 years. -

In November 2007 Tynwald resolved that the Council of Ministers consider the establishment of a suitable body for the preservation of War Memorials in the Isle of Man. Subsequently in October 2008, following a report by a Working Group established by Council of Ministers to consider the matter, Tynwald gave approval to the formation of the Isle of Man Government Preservation of War Memorials Committee. I am pleased to lay the Annual Report before Tynwald from the Chair of the Committee. I would like to formally thank the members of the Committee for their interest and dedication shown in the preservation of Manx War Memorials and to especially acknowledge the outstanding voluntary contribution made by all the membership. Induction of French Rafale Aircrafts in IAF drishtiias.com/printpdf/induction-of-french-rafale-aircrafts-in-iaf Why in News Recently, Indian Air Force (IAF) has received its first batch (5 out of 36) of French Rafale aviation combat aircraft at Ambala Air base (Haryana). The Rafales are India's first major acquisition of fighter planes in 23 years after the Sukhoi jets were imported from Russia. All the 36 jets will be delivered to India by the end of 2021. 1/6 Rafales Introduced in 2001, the Rafale is a French twin-engine and multirole fighter aircraft designed and built by Dassault Aviation being produced for both the French Air Force and for carrier-based operations in the French Navy. India has inked a Rs 59,000-crore deal in 2016 to procure 36 Rafale jets from French aerospace major Dassault Aviation after a nearly seven-year exercise to procure 126 Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) for the Indian Air Force did not fructify. The MMRCA deal was stalled due to disagreements over production in India. In comparison to the earlier deal i.e. MMRCA, Rafale has much technological advancement, lower life cycle cost and specifications according to the warfare needs of India. Specification 2/6 Air Supremacy: Equipped with a wide range of weapons, the Rafale is intended to perform air supremacy, interdiction (act of disrupting), aerial reconnaissance (observation to locate an enemy), ground support, in-depth strike, anti-ship strike and nuclear deterrence missions. Wide Range of Weapons: Meteor missile, Scalp cruise missile and MICA weapons system will be the mainstay of the weapons package of the Rafale jets. -

REPORT GREECE’S UNLIKELY COMPELLENCE AIR FORCE MODERNIZATION & DIPLOMATIC ASSERTIVENESS REPORT RIFAT ÖNCEL After a decade-long financial crisis, Greece recently initiated a comprehensive military modernization program. The country has undertaken a significant upgrade of its air force COMPELLENCE GREECE’S UNLIKELY inventory and is purchasing new fighter jets. Beside arms build-up, Greece is working hard to expand its alliance network in the Middle East while increasing its anti-Turkish pressure campaign across Europe and the United States. Although this policy has peaked recently, it is not a new phenomenon in the Greek security mindset. Originating from the so-called “Turkish threat”, this twofold effort has become the foundational element of Greek foreign and security strategies since Turkey’s Cyprus Peace Operation in 1974. Recent Greek military modernization and diplomatic activism is a clear demonstration of its decades-old compellence strategy, rather than a deterrence which its official disco- urse claims. If it were a policy of deterrence, it is consistently failing because Greece also claims that the regional status-quo is always changing, against its national interests, in favor of Turkey. Its strong emphasis on deterrence, in fact, belies its real strategy, one that is designed not to deter Turkey by dissuading it from taking a specific action but rather force it to renounce something that is already in process. In contemporary geopolitics, contrary to Greek demands, Turkey has been conducting seismic research, in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean Seas, under the protection of its navy and air force. Against this backdrop, Greece wants to boost its offensive capabilities, expand the num- ber of its allies, and ensure an international embargo on Turkey to force the latter to back down from its vital interests in the region. -

Toulouse, 7th May 2015 ATR appoints new Head of Communications Palmira Rotolo has been appointed as new Head of Communications of world’s leading turboprop manufacturer ATR. In her new position, she will be in charge of coordinating activities in the fields of Events, Brand Image, and both Internal and External Communications. Mrs.Rotolo has held a number of successive different positions within Alenia Aermacchi (previously Alenia Aeronautica), Superjet International, Finmeccanica and ATR. Since 2014, she was Head of Marketing Communication at Alenia Aermacchi. Previously, she had took the position of Head of Communication and Image (2012-2014), Deputy Head of Human Resources International (2010- 2012) and Head of International Communication (2007-2010), all of them also at Alenia Aermacchi. Before this, among other positions, she had been CEO Public Relations assistant while making part of the Task Force Team for the launch of SuperJet International (2006-2007), and she had managed Events at Finmeccanica (2004-2005). Mrs.Rotolo has an extensive knowledge of ATR, where she had already worked between 1992 and 2003, being successively in charge of External Relations, Public Relations and Exhibitions. She helds a Degree in Social Science from LUMSA University in Rome, Italy, and a Degree in Trainee Officer for mercantile shipping.
