Seize the Day! Seize the day! We all have favorite tunes and artists we count on to rev us up and kick our butts into gear! They can serve as morning “rise and shine” inspiration, an engine jumpstart for a mid-day slump, or as rocket boosters for taking on any task at hand. Imagine always having within reach a play list ready to get you on course and on fire! When creating yours, there’s no strict criteria except to choose the top songs that rev your spirit or get your blood pumping. Whether the lyrics are pointless or poignant; the tempo is wild or steady & engaging; whether its energy drives you to keep beat on the dash, or simply engages your gears at its opening chords- what matters is that an inner fire is lit. The suggested Play Lists can be mixed and rearranged to your adrenaline’s delight! Whichever tunes you choose to have on hand, and whether there are five or fifteen on your list, trust they are reorganizing your mind preparedness and setting your body up chemically to SEIZE THE DAY! In a press release of 15 March 2002, Bond producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli announced: “We are thrilled that Ma- donna, who is recognized as the world’s most exciting songwriter and performer, has agreed to compose and sing the song for the first James Bond movie of the new millennium” (“Die Another Day Main Title Song”). Madonna co-wrote the song with Mirwais, her consistent collaborator since the late 1990s. To help promote the movie, the single and its music video were released in October 2002; the film Die Another Day opened a month later in deliberate coincidence with the fortieth anniversary of the first Bond film. The single hit No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 3 in the U.K. It earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Song. The song later reappeared on Madonna’s American Life, lifting the album to Platinum certification by the RIAA and #1 on the Billboard chart. Makay, Advisor The purpose of this study is to use rhetorical criticism as a means of examining how Blacks are depicted in the lyrics of popular songs, particularly hip-hop music. This study provides a rhetorical analysis of 40 popular songs on Billboard’s Hot 100 Singles Charts from 1999 to 2006. The songs were selected from the Billboard charts, which were accessible to me as a paid subscriber of Napster. The rhetorical analysis of these songs will be bolstered through the use of Black feminist/critical theories. This study will extend previous research regarding the rhetoric of song. It also will identify some of the shared themes in music produced by Blacks, particularly the genre commonly referred to as hip-hop music. This analysis builds upon the idea that the majority of hip-hop music produced and performed by Black recording artists reinforces racial stereotypes, and thus, hegemony. The study supports the concept of which bell hooks (1981) frequently refers to as white supremacist capitalist patriarchy and what Hill-Collins (2000) refers to as the hegemonic domain. The analysis also provides a framework for analyzing the themes of popular songs across genres. The genres ultimately are viewed through the gaze of race and gender because Black male recording artists perform the majority of hip-hop songs.

The first thing I wanted to do after coming to Christ was write a song about it. Apparently I’m not alone. Through many years as a music business executive and now as President of Nashville Christian Songwriters, I have encountered thousands of aspiring songwriters who have a common passion to bring men, women, and children into a deeper sense of worshiping God through their original songs. The flood tide of these songwriters is only increasing, showing no signs of slowing as far as I can tell. In the three years since NCS has begun to offer coaching for songwriters, I have personally spoken with over 1,300 such songwriters about our programs, and, without fail, each of them has relayed a similar story. “I just feel called to songwriting and I know God has something bigger for me,” they all say in one way or the other.
