Bertram Rolland Davis was born in Bristol in 1897. Financial and familial situations prevented him from attending University, and after high school he began to work for the cable company established by his father, where he would stay for forty years. When not working he spent his free time as an amateur scholar with an interest in the Romantics and their links to Bristol. In particular, his interests tended towards former Poet Laureate Robert Southey and boy poet Thomas Chatterton. He corresponded with many of the leading Romantic scholars and critics of the twentieth century including Raymond D. Havens, E.H.W. Meyerstein, Maurice H. Fitzgerald, and Earl Leslie Griggs, and others. Davis also played an active role in preserving the history of Bristol and its famous residents. To support his research, Davis purchased as many documents relating to the Romantics as he could afford. He amassed a collection of forty-five manuscript groups comprised of original documents by Southey, Wordsworth, Coleridge, and their contemporaries as well as an extensive library relating to his academic interests. His library is known as the Bertram R. Davis “Robert Southey” collection. After Davis’ death, his personal library, manuscript groups, correspondence, and research files were acquired by the University of Waterloo. -

特別寄稿論文 Robert Southey’s Career Nicholas Roe Synopsis The essay concerns some of the paradoxes of Robert Southey’s career, which stretched from the French Revolution through to the early Victorian era, in particular continuities between his early revolutionary enthusiasm and the relentless energy of his professional life as a writer. His presence in anthologies is surveyed, and a range of critical responses is discussed. Finally, by way of identifying a more personal formative circumstance that may have shaped and impelled his life and writings, the essay explores the signifi cance of a memory from Southey’s early boyhood. * * * ‘There is about [Southey] and his career something unexplained’, David Rannie mused in 1907, ‘a touch of paradox, a trace of the injustice of fame, which makes him interesting’.1 Appointed Poet Laureate in 1813, Southey was acknowledged the most accomplished and productive writer of the age; yet for later generations he came to seem insignifi cant, irrel- evant, even an embarrassment when considered alongside his Romantic contemporaries. His unfl agging energy and teeming publications might even appear suspicious, impelled by ‘the early shaping given to his mind’ during the French Revolution – ‘decidedly revolutionary’, said Hazlitt, ‘the distraction of the time has unsettled him’.2 Looking to Southey’s childhood, Seamus Perry has suggested that a ‘formative disorientation and self-estrangement’ might explain the peculiarity of Southey’s career; thus, his unremitting work, year after year, may have been a way of -

It is still a puzzle to us now, due to its bi-vocal, multilayered construction. Though some of its original readers were fooled into thinking that it was written by a foreign visitor to their shores, a common response among the intrigued literati was that it was ‘pretty evidently the work of some experienced English bookmaker’.1 Within six months of its publication this ‘bookmaker’ was revealed as the poet, reviewer and translator, Robert Southey.2 The pretence of a Spanish author, communicating his first impressions of English manners and customs in epistolary form to his family at home, was important to Southey for several reasons. In the spring of 1805, when he had begun writing the book, he declared his plan to be: My Spaniard, D. Manuel Alvares Espriella, is a young man, of good family, travelling solely for instruction. he is come to England with a Mr J. a London merchant, with whom he had become acquainted in Spain, & in whose family he is domesticated in London. He arrives early in May & travels immediately to town, where he remains for a few weeks, & then takes certain journeys into the country – winters in London, & returns late in the spring thro the West of England to Falmouth. -

1 Accepted for publication (15.1.2018) by Edinburgh University Press in the journal Romanticism: https://www.euppublishing.com/loi/rom Robert Southey and His Age: Ageing, Old Age and the Days of Old Lynda Pratt, University of Nottingham Throughout a four-decade career, the controversial poet, historian, biographer and essayist Robert Southey explored the trajectories both of his own individual life and of the time and the society in which he lived. Using a range of published and unpublished sources, including Southey’s vast correspondence, this essay will track this preoccupation for the first time and consider its implications for understanding both of Southey and of Romanticism. From the earliest part of his writing life, Southey recorded his awareness of moving from one stage to the next, of progressing from youth to old age. In 1797, when he was 23 years old, he wrote that ‘experience has taught me wisdom, & I am again as silent — as self centering as in early youth’.1 In 1808 he dismissed the double negatives that had littered his early poems as ‘the sins of my youth’, and in 1812 described a meeting with Percy Shelley as acting ‘upon me as my own Ghost would do. He is just what I was in 1794’ (CLRS, iii. 1475, iv. 2012). By 1813, when he was thirty-eight, he felt ‘older in mind than in years, and in years than in appearance’ (CLRS, iv. 2211).
