In Malayalam Cinema
INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF RESEARCH CULTURE SOCIETY ISSN: 2456-6683 Volume - 1, Issue - 3, May - 2017 Masculinities and Disabilities: Reconfiguring the ‘Normal Body’ in Malayalam Cinema Angita Ram V PhD Research Scholar, Department of Translation Studies The English and Foreign Languages University, Hyderabad, India Email - [email protected] Abstract: Michael S. Kimmel (2004) in “Masculinity as Homophobia: Fear, Shame, and Silence in the Construction of Gender Identity,” argues that manhood is demonstrated for other men’s approval and it is other men who evaluate the performance. Hence, masculinity is a homosocial enactment and men test themselves, perform heroic feats, and take enormous risks so that other men would grant them manhood. It is in this context that this paper attempts to analyze the visual icons of the so called ‘abnormal’ heroes performed by Dileep one of the South Indian actors, and demonstrate how these roles of the hero as disabled (such as hunchbacked, mentally and physically challenged, with cleft lip and speech impediments) and cross dresser, representing a non-hegemonic section of the society displace the mainstream dominant notions of masculinity in Malayalam cinema. The study would be structured in such a way, giving a short introduction on the kinds of roles performed by Dileep that involve a series of disabled/deformed/abnormal male heroes that do not confirm to the dominant perception of the hero figure in the backdrop of the theories on masculinities. All of these movies- Kunjikoonan, 2002 (directed by Sasi Shanker), Chanthupottu, 2005 ( directed by Lal Jose), Pachakuthira, 2006 (directed by Kamal), Sound Thoma,2013 (directed by Vyshak) that had Dileep performing the disabled, cross dressing, deformed hero figures went on to become box office success and introduced new figures of manliness. -

Measures to Mitigate Agrarian Distress in Alappuzha and Kuttanad Wetland Ecosystem A Study Report by M. S. SWAMINATHAN RESEARCH FOUNDATION 2007 M. S. SWAMINATHAN RESEARCH FOUNDATION FOREWORD Every calamity presents opportunities for progress provided we learn appropriate lessons from the calamity and apply effective remedies to prevent its recurrence. The Alappuzha district along with Kuttanad region has been chosen by the Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India for special consideration in view of the prevailing agrarian distress. In spite of its natural wealth, the district has a high proportion of population living in poverty. The M. S. Swaminathan Research Foundation was invited by the Union Ministry of Agriculture to go into the economic and ecological problems of the Alappuzha district as well as the Kuttanad Wetland Ecosystem as a whole. The present report is the result of the study undertaken in response to the request of the Union Ministry of Agriculture. The study team was headed by Dr. S. Bala Ravi, Advisor of MSSRF with Drs. Sudha Nair, Anil Kumar and Ms. Deepa Varma as members. The Team was supported by a panel of eminent technical advisors. Recognising that the process of preparation of such reports is as important as the product, the MSSRF team held wide ranging consultations with all concerned with the economy, ecological security and livelihood security of Kuttanad wetlands. Information on the consultations held and visits made are given in the report. The report contains a malady-remedy analysis of the problems and potential solutions. The greatest challenge in dealing with multidimensional problems in our country is our inability to generate the necessary synergy and convergence among the numerous government, non-government, civil society and other agencies involved in the implementation of the programmes such as those outlined in this report. -

The 40Th Annual Conference on South Asia (2011)
2011 40th Annual Conference on South Asia Paper Abstracts Center for South Asia University of Wisconsin - Madison Aaftaab, Naheed Claiming Middle Class: Globalization, IT, and exclusionary practices in Hyderabad In this paper, I propose that middle class identity in the IT sector can be read as part of an “identity politics” that claim certain rights and benefits from governmental bodies both at the national and international levels. India’s economic growth since the 1991 liberalization has been attended by the growth of the middle classes through an increase in employment opportunities, such as those in the IT sector. The claims to middle class status are couched in narratives of professional affiliations that shape culturally significant components of middle class identities. The narratives rely on the ability of IT professionals to reconcile the political identities of nationalism while simultaneously belonging to a global work force. IT workers and the industry at large are symbols of India’s entry into the global scene, which, in turn, further reinforces the patriotic and nationalist rhetoric of “Indianness.” This global/national identity, however, exists through exclusionary practices that are evident in the IT sector despite the management’s assertions that the industry’s success is dependent on “merit based” employment practices. Using ethnographic data, I will examine middle class cultural and political claims as well as exclusionary practices in professional settings of the IT industry in order to explore the construction of new forms of identity politics in India. 40th Annual Conference on South Asia, 2011 1 Acharya, Anirban Right To (Sell In) The City: Neoliberalism and the Hawkers of Calcutta This paper explores the struggles of urban street vendors in India especially during the post liberalization era. -
