Candidates for Conformation Judge 2021

Michael Canalizo ~ New York I have judged Borzoi around the world for many years, Skloster’s 2019 show in Sweden soon to be my next highlighted event. I have a clear vision of what/how the breed should conform to the standard in form and function with the important balance of the intrinsic and harmonious elements of beauty of type. I think my preference for movement to be an important test of correctness is well known. In closing, I have closely followed the breed over all these years and am mindful of fads that may impact the breed and always careful not to miss a great ‘throwback’ that stands out as one that some aren’t sure if they’re 40 years too early..or 40 years too late!

Karen Dumke, Nonsuch Wisconsin As a life member of both the BCOA and Midwest Borzoi Club, I have been a dedicated breeder of Borzoi since 1983. Using the Nonsuch kennel name I have bred more Champions and Specially Winners than I can count. I have also developed a recognizable “type” and pedigrees that look like finely woven tapestries. Besides studying Borzoi in this country, I have also visited Borzoi Breeders in many countries and have imported from Great Britain, Switzerland, Sweden, and . An AKC judge since the 1990s, I have judged major Specialties across America and also in New Zealand. I would greatly appreciate your vote for BCOA judge.

Steven Evans, Mistraka Australia Borzoi have been my passion since 1979, incorporating lines from Sweden, UK, USA thru the years. Breeding and showing these past 40years allows me to appreciate just how to approach and Judge Borzoi. Qualifying in 2012 to judge the Group then judging here in Australia the USA and Canada (three Borzoi, two and two other Hound Club Specialties). Many of you will know me from my many visits, specialties thru the 1980’s and the BCOA Nationals (first in 1997). To Judge for you there in 2021 would be the ultimate honour and I promise memorable!

Barbara Ewing, Kirov New Mexico Borzoi have been my only breed for 40 years (judging since 1998), producing the earners of 100+ show and performance titles from 11 litters bred under the Kirov prefix, earning AKC Breeder of Merit Gold. Seven successive generations of Kirov-bred dams have earned ROM or ROMX. I have bred the earners of multiple top-ten and #1 rankings in obedience/rally, , agility, LGRA/NOTRA, and open field coursing, as well as points at specialties. I do not believe there has to be a split between show and performance ; we need to preserve the functional athletes that Borzoi were meant to be.

Prudence Hlatky, Soyara Texas Thank you for your confidence in me to judge your beautiful Borzoi. Borzoi are truly magnificent, gorgeous, agile, powerful, stunning gifts of nature. In both breeding and judging, I’ve always held form and function foremost in mind, looking for the strongest type while holding true to its being a functional Borzoi. I’ve had national winning, #1 ranked, specialty-winning, BIS, BIF Soyara bred and handled Borzoi, which speaks to my dedication to this ideal. I finished my first Borzoi in 1971 and have been judging Borzoi since 2007. As a judge I continue to seek, without agenda or favor, the kind of Borzoi that typifies this vision.

Meghann Lord-Fenn, Warwind, Colorado Borzoi have always been a part of my life. Before I could walk, I knew how to hold a newborn puppy. I loved showing our borzoi during my junior showmanship career! I also showed our Warwind-bred and imported borzoi to several Best in Futurity, BISS,Best in Sweeps and group placements. To this day, I continue to enjoy showing our borzoi and . I am now an AKC judge for Juniors, Borzoi,Whippets, and . A long- standing member of BCOA, I am humbled to be considered as a judge for our National Specialty, and if chosen, I will be honored to give back to the sport (and breed) that has given me so much.
