Welcome to New College A warm welcome to New College who have made the short journey from Swindon for this afternoon’s Wiltshire Senior Cup fixture. We hope all from New College enjoy their visit to our Meet your local team.... new ground and we wish them a safe journey home. Three of our players who will be looking forward to today’s game will be Harvey Scholes, Joe Hiscock and Christy Millar, all of who made their first big break in adult football with New College. Richard James are pleased to have recently joined the Royal Wootton Bassett High Street. As you may or may Following our promotion to the Uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Division it is now 2.5 years not know, we have recently taken over the reigns at since the two sides have met. In total the two clubs have played each other seven times with Select Properties whilst Andy and Kerry the former Wootton Bassett Town having the better of things with six wins and just one defeat. Mark owners settle in to their retirement (lucky them!). Barnes certainly enjoyed playing today’s visitors, netting seven times in the last three fixtures between the two clubs. Of the two defeats in those Royal Wootton Bassett Football Club and are looking six games one was a narrow 2-1 reverse at home to league leaders Cheltenham Saracens, so forward to a successful season ahead. we will need to be at our best if we are to avoid going out of this prestigious competition. These cup games are always tight affairs and New College will be looking to achieve an upset here at Josh McHugh the New Gerard Buxton ground. Like the game in the previous round against Ludgershall Sports Alex Hornby our visitors will come with nothing to lose. With New College sides traditionally playing good Managing Director football on the deck they will certainly find the pitch here at the New Gerard Buxton Ground to their liking.

Highmoor Ibis Are you thinking about moving? We were without a First Team game on Saturday but the previous Monday we had made the trip down the M4 to play Highmoor Ibis. There is my match report on that game in today’s programme. Unfortunately we lost the game 4-0 against one of the better forward lines I have Whether you are thinking about selling or seen for a while. Playing on a Monday night is designed to bring in people who would normally watch other sides and the hospitality suite at the Palmer Park Stadium certainly had more letting, contact us today for an up to date representatives from Henley and Binfield than from Bassett that night. On the night we were also struggling to field a full side due to injuries and work commitments and to be honest we were not really much of a threat going forward against Highmoor. As one t: 01793 855 117 of our spectators said at the end though, you could not fault the lads who made themselves available for the game; the problem on the night was those that were missing. Hopefully Paul w: richardjames.info will be able to find some new players to strengthen the squad from somewhere but the player pool in the Swindon area is drying up as lads find other things to do with their time. Reserves With the First Team without a game on Saturday and my wife wanting to come back to Bassett to meet up with former school friends I was offered the rare opportunity of taking in a Reserve Team game. With the side featuring a couple of players who have previously graced the First Team I attended with anticipation of seeing these players pushing Paul to use them in the First Team with their performances but was somewhat disappointed to see that, despite being at an age when they should really be at their prime, they seemed to have gone backwards as players. The game was a close affair but opponents Trowbridge Wanderers had to field their manager who looked like he probably officially retired a few years back and the Reserves lost 3-2. Trowbridge without any subs and a 40+ player manager should really have been defeated by a Reserve Team of a Hellenic League side. Other than two goal Luke Adams I did not see much that Paul could currently use to deal with our injury problems.

A win at last for the Ladies Team On Sunday the Ladies Team secured their first win of the season with a comprehensive 6-0 home victory over Forest of Dean. Amongst the Bassett scorers were Emily Bogg, Amber Egerton, Katy Edwards, Laura Gammon, Debbie Rose and Caroline Hook. Having secured this first win hopefully confidence will be boosted and the Ladies can start to climb the table.

Swindon Town Under 15’s After the success of the Oxford United game, when we attracted a crowd of over 150, on Wednesday night (11th November) there is another Swindon Town game here at the New Gerard Buxton Ground, this time involving their Under 15’s. Swindon Town on this occasion will be playing against Wolverhampton Wanderers with an 18:45 kick-off. Entrance will again be £3 for adults and £1 for Under 16’s. Come along and watch the Town’s youth talent in action and support both the Football Club and teh Sports Association at the same time.

Saturday 21st November Social Night 19:30 (Food & Live Band “Hook Street”) The football club will be holding a social night on Saturday 21st November at the Club commencing from 19:30. This will be an adults only night, open to all coaches, parents, adult players, family friends, and all club volunteers. Food will be provided by Ganges Indian Restaurant with live music by Hook Street, whose members are part of the football club. Tickets will cost £5 “only” and can be obtained from behind the bar at the club. It would be nice to see you all there but be warned tickets are selling out fast.

Bluefin Insurance Cup Our Bluefin Insurance Cup game away against Bracknell has now been re-scheduled for this coming Tuesday. With Bracknell now under the management of the former Binfield and Burnham manager Mark Tallentire this game will be somewhat tougher than would otherwise have been the case. I am sure that the Bracknell side will be strengthened by a number of new signings ahead of our visit. With this game being pretty local for me unfortunately I will not be able to attend due to work commitments. These notes are written ahead of Wednesday night’s Floodlit Cup game away at Tytherington. Hopefully by the time you read these notes we have already progressed to the next round of another cup competition.

Programme Looking at what is included in the programme tonight. There is a match report from the game last week against Highmoor Ibis and the player featured in the First Team player profile is Luke Kuczynski. The defunct former opponents feature this week showcases the Swindon based side Lawn FC and there is the usual article from a journalist from the Non-League paper. The reminiscing article this week features former First Team Manager Paul Burke. Enjoy the game and hopefully progress into the next round of the Wiltshire Senior Cup for Royal Wootton Bassett Town.

OG 2 PB: They were a great bunch of lads to work with and share time with both on and off the pitch and we enjoyed many nights out in Bassett and Swindon. I'm still in contact with so many of them and I'll never forget that first season.

MS: Similar to the earlier question, of all the players who played under you as a manager what would be your all time starting eleven? PB: John Haines, Dwayne Quinn, Steve Yeardley (Capt), Lee Marshall, Steve Bunting, Matt Bennett, Ben Gascoyne, Stuart Hemsley, Paul Crabtree, Sean Terry and Chris Mills.

MS: As well as Trowbridge, would I be right in thinking Letcombe was also not on your list of favourite grounds to visit? “Bassett Pies” PB: No, as they always promoted themselves as a friendly club but the way their team treated a young Phil Tearle in the league game there after he had scored a hat-trick against them in an earlier cup tie was as bad as anything I've seen as Delicious pies, made using fresh, local ingredients they did everything to get him sent off. They called him names all game and dived every time he got near them and did get him sent off. Phil was as good a forward as I've seen and the actions on that day really took their toll on him.

MS: After managing the First Team you took up managing a youth side. I did the same having managed at Bassett Sports and Minety I then ran a youth team at Wootton Bassett Town from Under 9 through to Under 18. Looking back I have much more enjoyable memories of managing the adult sides than the youngsters. Which did you prefer? PB: I was actually running the under 8s at the same time as the first team and carried on doing it until the Under 15s when I packed it in due to many reasons really. As with the adult team working with Woody, I was lucky enough to run the youth team all the way through with Mal Chivers who has also became a very good friend to me but it was much harder than the adult teams. We won the Cup at Under 9s at the County Ground but had lost our good friend and fellow coach Robert Woodhouse the week after which affected us all but for a time it brought us all working in the same direction. It's not nice to get sworn at by an adult when he's sub or gets taken off but to have parents moaning was the hardest thing of all so although I love coaching young players it's the adult game I prefer.

MS: Would you consider going back into management in the future? Kiosk PB.I was offered the job as assistant manager at Melksham by Wayne Thorne the summer after I finished with Bassett but turned it down mainly due to problems with travelling and a change of my work hours. I regret that as it would've been a great opportunity for me and nothing has really happened since. I still think I have something to give and feel like I have unfinished business as a manager, an assistant manager or coach and hope one day to get another chance. If not then I'm proud to say I was manager of a great football club and worked with so many good people. Steak & Ale – Chicken & Mushroom – Spicy Turkey MS: Finally on football, I ask everyone this question. Bassett bobble at Rylands Way – fact or just an excuse used by players with poor ball control? Sold at Kiosk during Match Days – Access via Stadium Pitch PB: It was a fact but it made Rylands Way all the more special for me and sometimes the ball would sit up and you'd slice it but sometimes you'd smash it into the top corner. Bassett Bassett’s reserves players would play for us when they had no game and one of them asked if I'd go training with Bassett folded for a period pre World War 1 before re-forming in the Calne & District League. A short unsuccessful spell in the Swindon & District League saw the team return to the Calne nothing to do with anything apart from trying to help them during the game. I then didn't play Saturdays for a few months as my daughter was born but went back to Bassett Sports when Richard Vincent took over and played for them until Having won the Calne League for the second time Bassett moved up into Wiltshire League Division 2. Promotion was achieved in the first season and the team remained in the top division until the start of World War II. After the war Bassett Barry Giles asked me to go back to Bassett when he took over the reserves and I've been with the club ever since. recommenced in the County Senior League but struggled. In 1956-57 a reorganisation of football in Wiltshire saw the creation of a Premier Division and Bassett found themselves in the second tier. Season 1958-59 saw the first title secured MS: I remember that you were a very skilful midfield player and a big talker on the pitch but not necessarily the hardest when Bassett finished top of Division 1. Back in the top tier the highest place finish was 8th in Season 1967-68. Then, working member of the team. Again have I got that one right? following another reorganisation, Bassett found themselves in the Wiltshire Combination where they were to remain until PB: I can honestly say that I didn't think I wasn't a hard working player and never had a manager tell me that in all the time I 1976-77 when the current Wiltshire County Football League was formed. The second season in the new league saw Bassett played football. There were times when I'd worked all day Friday on the milk round, went to work behind the bar at The relegated but they were to bounce straight back in 1978-79 when they finished runners-up. Unfortunately momentum could Woodshaw Inn after that until closing time and then was up early again for the milk round and rushed to games to play. That not be maintained and they were immediately relegated to Division 2 where they remained for 5 seasons. A second league as well as having a young family meant some days I simply was whacked and I was told by a few of my managers I always title was secured in 1984-85 when Bassett were promoted back to Division 1. This time the team were able to hold their own played better on a Sunday morning or when the team I was playing for had a mid-week game. Bassett missed immediate promotion back to the Premier by one point in 2005-06 training if they thought you were having a bad spell but used that as an incentive because they didn't leave you out of the and went close again in 2008-09, finishing fourth. Meanwhile Bassett became the first club in Wiltshire to be awarded Charter team as a result of it. You knew it was a kindly kick up the bum and it worked more times than not. This season sees the club playing at the New Gerard Buxton Sports Ground, which was opened in the summer of First Team and which of the older players took you under their wing? 2015 and with the Royal title now included within the club name. PB: There were loads of good players in the club and the reserve team players found it hard to break into the first team due to the quality that was in their team and we had a very good reserve team. I looked up to Tony Vines as he trained the same way as he played and was a winner in everything he tried to do. We used to go for long runs around Bassett at training and I tried so hard to beat him and only ever once got close but he still passed me as we entered the old Comp on the sprint to the gym where we did our ball work. He was so fit and even today I marvel at all the running he still does and he's a top fella as well. There were some real characters at the club like Mitch Johns, Roger Frost, Pete York and we had some great nights out especially at the Bier Keller in Bristol. I always remember my first game for the first team when we were away to North Leigh and arriving at the club was asked by a player why I was so early for the reserve team game and when I told him I was with the first team he said “I didn't realise we were short”. I waited my time and a few years later when he'd returned from a knee op and came back with the first team I said the same thing to him. We had a laugh about it as he finally apologised for saying it to me.

MS: I believe you played in the game against Swindon Town when Glenn Hoddle brought the Swindon Town First Team to Rylands Way and over 2,000 fans filled Rylands Way. What do you remember of that game and is it the highlight of your time at Wootton Bassett Town? PB: A great occasion to see so many fans at the ground and the fact that it was their first team squad made it so special to be on the same pitch. I wouldn't go as far to say it was the highlight of my time at Bassett Town F.C though as that would have to be managing in the F.A Cup and sharing that experience with my great mate Woody in the dugout. Every time I played or managed the club has been a highlight but when I was told by a ref that I should be proud of the first team one game because they showed the same passion for the game that I had was also a special moment.

Brimscombe & Thrupp extends their unbeaten run to 14 games in all completions and another clean sheet. One moment of magic by Ollie Pitt was all that was needed to be remembered from this game which otherwise lacked any real quality. Pitt scored a beauty of a free kick in the fourth minute bending the ball over the wall and into the top corner of the goal to give them a 1-0 win at Ardley United. Ascot United secured a 4-2 victory over Oxford City Nomads with two very late goals. Ascot took the lead in the 17th min when Daryl McLean's pass into the box where Jamie West shot was blocked, but the ball went back to him and he made no mistake placing it into the far corner. The lead did not last long as Kaylem Patterson cut the ball back to Gillett to equalise after good work from Amer Awadh and John Rixon. It got worse 5 mins later as OCN got in front as Ascot switched off when a corner was headed in by Patterson. 60 mins gone and West's free kick was defected just wide. Match Reports Royal Wootton Bassett Town F. C. Depleted Bassett easily defeated would like to thank our Palmer Park, Reading, 27th October Not the easiest place to visit at the best of times but when you have to travel to Highmoor Ibis on sponsors for this season: a Monday night witthout 6 of your key players you always knew it was going to be a tough ask to come away with a result and so it proved. Having to field a side without regular keeper Curtis Meare, top striker Steve Robertson, key defenders Adam Corcoran and George Drewitt, captain Steve Yeardley and influential midfield player Sam Packer Bassett’s squad was stretched to the Senior Section limit. You just knew it was not going to be a good evening when our opponents managed to spell our name wrong on the cover of the matchday programme! Gold Sponsor - Steele Davis The first ten minutes saw the two sides cancel each other out as they sought to deal with a very Gold Sponsor - Allen & Foxworthy uneven pitch with a propensity to a wicked bounce which brought back memories if the infamous Rymads Way bobble (more on this later). The first shot on goal came after 10 minutes when Gold & Shirt Sponsor - Richard James Highmoor’s Jemel Forde-Small effort went well wide. Bassett’s firts chance of the game came on 15 minutes when they were awarded a free kick on the dge of the box. Unfortunately Dan Bailey’s shot went straight into the wall and the chance was gone. Th ebest chance of the night so far fell to Bassett on 20 minutes when a great ball from Steve Olphert put Joe Hiscock in the clear but his effort was well saved by Michael Cadle in the Highmoor goal. From the resulting corner Matt Cheetham headed over. Bassett continued to press for the opening goal and Bailey’s header on 28 minutes was easily dealt with by Cadle. After performing well in that opening half an hour all the good work was undone when Bassett compeltely switched off at a Highmoor corner. The corner was taken quickly with a ball into Jemel Forde Small who fired into the Bassett net at the near post. A poor goal to concede after First Team Shirt Sponsors - Richard James Bassett had done well to restrict one of the most skilful forward lines in the Uhlsport Hellenic First Team Training Kit Sponsor - Area Windows League to a few half chances. On 33 minutes a chance fell to Joe Hiscock after a Bassett free kick and he should really have done better but the chance again went begging. The game was Reserve Team Shirt Sponsor - Richard James effectively over as a contest when seconds later a defensive clearance from Austin Best looked a simple take for keeper Luke Kuczynski but th eball took a wicked bounce just in front of him and Ladies Team – Roberts & Sons, Aftech and TWB Scrap Metal sailed over his head into the empty net. One of the most bizarre goals seen in a long time. U18 Floodlit - Philips Electronics UK Limited Bassett did their best to try and get a goal back just before the break. Bailey shot from 20 yards and the effort was deflected for a corner. From the resulting corner, good work from Bailey set up Matt Cheetham but he fired over to leave it 2-0 at the break to the home side. The second half saw Bassett trying to get back into th egames and two efforts in the space of a Youth Section couple of minutes from Steve Olphert was the closest Bassett came. Both efforts went well wide of the goal, the second coming after a great set-up by young Scott Walduck making his first start Under 16 – TBA of the season in the Premier. The best chance of the night for Bassett came on 70 minutes when Under 15 - Colonnade Conservatories Ltd Matt Cheetham missed a header after a great cross from Dan Comer. It looked like a goal all the way but went wide of the post. Under 14 - TBA After that it was really all Highmoor. Harrison Bailey made it 3-0 to the home side. Moments later Under 13 - TBA it was 4-0 when keeper Luke Kuczynski hesitated and Jemel Forde-Small nipped in to score. With all three points secured Highmoor took their foot off the gas and Bassett were able to create Under 12 - TBA three further chances but all came to nothing. Cheetham shot just wide on 85 minutes before Under 11 - J.Rouse and Son and Swindon Grab Hire Dale Richhards was put clean through only to fire into the side netting. A little more composure and it would have been a consolation goal. With two minutes to go Dan Comer fired in a free kick Under 10 - Bevirs Solicitors which was tipped over the bar by Cadle in the Highmoor goal. 4-0 to the home side on the night and despite a few chance sin front of goal in reality there was only ever going to be one winner in Under 9 - TBA this game. Credit to the lads who made it to Reading on this Monday night the problem for Under 8 - Homelands Fencing and Landscaping Bassett was really those that were not there. Bassett now take a break from league action with three key cup games coming up which could Under 7 - TBA define the season for Bassett. Hopefully most of the missing players will be back soon. If not there really is a need to strengthen the squad to compete better at this level. Programme Printing & Sponsor – Cats Solutions Man of the Match: Matt Cheetham – Again another hard working performance from Bassett’s All our advertising board sponsors and all our First Team kit player sponsors experienced midfield player.
