Upton Sinclair Against Capitalism
Scientific Journal in Humanities, 1(1):41-46,2012 ISSN:2298-0245 Walking Through The Jungle: Upton Sinclair Against Capitalism George SHADURI* Abstract At the beginning of the 20th century, the American novel started exploring social themes and raising social problems. Upton Sinclair’s novel The Jungle, which appeared in 1906, was a true sensation for American reading community. On the one hand, it described the outra- geous practices of meatpacking industry prevalent at those times on the example of slaughterhouses in Chicago suburbs; on the other hand, it exposed the hapless life of American worker: the book showed what kind of suffering the worker experienced from his thankless work and poor living conditions. Sinclair hoped that the novel, which was avidly read both in America and abroad, would help improve the plight of American worker. However, to his disappointment, the government and society focused their attention exclusively on unhealthy meatpacking practices, which brought about necessary, but still superficial reforms, ignoring the main topic: the life of the common worker. Sinclair was labeled “a muckraker”, whereas he in reality aspired for the higher ideal of changing the existing social order, the thought expressed both in his novels and articles. The writer did not take into account that his ideas of non-violent, but drastic change of social order were alien for American society, for which capitalism was the most natural and acceptable form of functioning. The present article refers to the opinions of both American and non-American scholars to explain the reasons for the failure of Sinclair’s expectations, and, based on their views, concludes why such a failure took place. -

VA PREFACE In the course of an attempt to trace the history of the Short- Story in English it came to seem desirable, three or four years ago, to examine with some thoroughness, as the terminus ad quern, the work of Rudyard Kipling. The results of this study were rather fully set forth in the form of notes intended for class-room lectures. Revision and publication of these notes was advised by Professor Bliss Perry of Harvard College and by Professor Charles Mills Gayley of the University of Califor- nia. To these good friends of the writer this little book owes its being. Without their criticisms and suggestions, moreover, it would have been even less worthy than it is of the author with whom it is concerned. This period is often painted as one of advancement of the human condition. Sinclair refutes this by unveiling the horrible injustices of Chicago’s meat packing industry as Jurgis Rudkus, his protagonist, discovers the truth about opportunity and prosperity in America. This book is a good choice for eleventh and twelfth grade, junior college, or college students mature enough to understand the purpose of its content. The “hooks” for most students are the human-interest storyline and the graphic descriptions of the meat industry and the realities of immigrant life in America. The teacher’s main role while reading this book with students is to help them understand Sinclair’s purpose. Coordinating the reading of The Jungle with a United States history study of the beginning of the 1900s will illustrate that this novel was not intended as mere entertainment but written in the cause of social reform. As students read, they should be encouraged to develop and express their own ideas about the many political, ethical, and personal issues addressed by Sinclair. This guide includes an overview, which identifies the main characters and summarizes each chapter. -

Name: Class: Rikki-Tikki-Tavi By Rudyard Kipling 1893 Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) was an English journalist, short-story writer, poet, and novelist. Kipling’s most popular work is his collection of short stories titled The Jungle Book. “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi” is a short story from The Jungle Book about the adventures of a young mongoose. As you read, take notes on how the characters react to danger during the story. At the hole where he went in Red-Eye called to Wrinkle-Skin. Hear what little Red-Eye saith:1 “Nag, come up and dance with death!” Eye to eye and head to head, (Keep the measure, Nag.) This shall end when one is dead; (At thy pleasure, Nag.) Turn for turn and twist for twist — (Run and hide thee, Nag.) Hah! The hooded Death has missed! (Woe2 betide3 thee, Nag!) [1] This is the story of the great war that Rikki-tikki- tavi fought single-handed, through the bath- rooms of the big bungalow in Segowlee "Yellow Mongoose" by Colin Frankland is licensed under CC BY-NC 4 cantonment. Darzee, the tailor-bird, helped him, 2.0. and Chuchundra, the musk-rat, who never comes out into the middle of the floor, but always creeps round by the wall, gave him advice; but Rikki-tikki did the real fighting. He was a mongoose, rather like a little cat in his fur and his tail, but quite like a weasel in his head and his habits. His eyes and the end of his restless nose were pink; he could scratch himself anywhere he pleased, with any leg, front or back, that he chose to use; he could fluff up his tail till it looked like a bottle-brush, and his war-cry, as he scuttled through the long grass, was: “Rikk-tikk-tikki-tikki-tchk!” One day, a high summer flood washed him out of the burrow where he lived with his father and mother, and carried him, kicking and clucking, down a roadside ditch. -
Comparing "The Jungle Book" by Rudyard Kipling to Disney's Film Adaptations
Abigail McMahon “I Wan’Na Be Like You”: Comparing The Jungle Books by Rudyard Kipling to Disney’s The Jungle Book (1967) and The Jungle Book (2016) Faculty Sponsor: Katherine Kittredge, Department of English Many people think that children’s literature is just for a child’s entertainment. They don’t stop to think about the moral lessons that the stories are teaching the children. Little Red Riding Hood teaches kids not to talk to strangers, The Ugly Duckling teaches kids that outer beauty wasn’t the most important thing, and Stone Soup teaches kids the importance of sharing, etc.… The Jungle Books by Rudyard Kipling is another example to the many lessons that children’s literature teaches kids. What is interesting about this set of stories is how they have been told through the years. The Jungle Books have had many adaptions and retelling of Mowgli’s tale. The most known adaption of Kipling’s stories was Disney’s animated film The Jungle Book (1967) and Disney’s newest live action version of the film, The Jungle Book (2016). The strange thing to consider is that the book and both films, while from the same source material, differ in what they offer to the audience. The original stories tell vignettes of Mowgli’s life as he grows up and what he learns from the other animals. They teach him how to be a friend to all and how to decide when a fight is worth it or not among other things. Though, a lot of the stories in Kipling’s book don’t even focus on Mowgli. -

DEMONIZING UNIONS: RELIGIOUS RHETORIC IN THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY AMERICAN STRIKE NOVEL A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by David Michael Cosca August 2019 © David Michael Cosca DEMONIZING UNIONS: RELIGIOUS RHETORIC IN THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY AMERICAN STRIKE NOVEL David Michael Cosca, Ph. D. Cornell University 2019 Demonizing Unions uncovers the significance of a Biblical idiom in American novels portraying violent labor conflicts from the 1910s to the 1930s. I reveal the different ways that Upton Sinclair’s King Coal and The Coal War, Mary Heaton Vorse’s Strike!, and Ruth McKenney’s Industrial Valley employ a Biblical motif both to emphasize the God-like power of Capital over society, and to critique an emergent socio-political faith in business power. The texts I examine demonstrate how it was clear to industrialists in the early 20th century that physical violence was losing its efficacy. Therefore, much of the brunt of the physical conflict in labor struggles could be eased by waging a war of ideas to turn public opinion into an additional, ultimately more powerful, weapon against the potential of organized labor. I argue that in these texts, the besmearing of the discontented workers as violent dupes of “outside agitators,” rather than regular folks with economic grievances, takes on Biblical proportions. In turn, these authors utilize Biblical stories oriented around conceptions of power and hierarchy to illuminate the potential of ordinary humans to effect their own liberation. This pregnant moment in time was the result ofdecades of ferment, indeed more than 100 years of growing agitation to curb the excesses of American capitalism, beginning with Jefferson's warnings about the deleterious effects ofurbanized culture, and proceeding through the painful dislocation ofthe emerging industrial economy, the ex- cesses ofspeculation during the Civil War, the rise ofthe robber barons, the suppression oflabor unions, the exploitation of immigrant labor, through to the exposes ofthe muckrakers. By the decade ofthe ' teens, the evils ofcapitalism were widely acknowledged, even by champions ofthe system. Socialism became capitalism's logical alternative and the rallying point for the disenchanted. It was, of course, merely a vision, largely untested. But that is exactly why the socialist movement was so formidable. The artists and writers of the Masses didn't need to defend socialism when Rockefeller's henchmen were gunning down mine workers and their families in Ludlow, Colorado. Eventually, the American socialist movement would shatter on the rocks ofthe Russian revolution, when it was finally confronted with the reality ofa socialist state, but that story comes later, after the Masses was run from the stage.
