Patient Robert Bennet and Dr. Karen West, Dean of UNLV School of Dental Medicine HISTORY

Some of the land on which the Las Vegas Medical District is taking shape was dedicated to agriculture well into the 1930s. It was once home to an 80-acre dairy farm, cultivated by a Japanese tenant farmer and housed handicapped and indigent men in the 1920s in what was then known as the Clark County Poor Farm. Part of this property is the former site of the Clark County Hospital, which was the genesis for today’s University Medical Center of Southern Nevada (UMC), the former site of the Southern Nevada Health District building erected in 1965 and now the future site of new buildings for the UNLV School of Medicine.
