Central Problems in Cultural Studies 1 Language and Material For Marxism, culture is a corporeal force locked into the socially organized production of the material conditions of existence. Marxism has argued that the material mode of production is ‘the real foundation’ of cultural superstructures. That is, the material – understood here as the economic – determines the cultural. However, this orthodox reading of Marx proved to be too mechanical and deterministic in exploring the specific features of culture. Consequently, the narrative of cultural studies involves a distancing of itself from Marxist reductionism. Instead, the analysis of the autonomous logic of language, culture, representation and consumption was placed in the foreground. – Barker, pp. 25-26 2 The Textual Character of Culture Most students of cultural studies are aware that culture can be read as a text, using concepts like signification, code or discourse. However, an emphasis on structuralist and poststructuralist accounts of signification has sometimes led cultural studies to reify language as a ‘thing’ or ‘system’ rather than grasp it as a social practice. – Barker, p. 26 3 The metaphor of culture as ‘like a language’ has a great deal to recommend it. However, there is also much to be gained by describing culture in terms of practices, routines and spatial arrangements. Not only is language always embedded in practice, but also all practices signify. Further, the identification of textual codes and subject positions does not guarantee that the proscribed meanings are ‘taken up’ by concrete persons in daily life (see Ang, 1985; Morley, 1992). – Barker, p. 26 4 The Location of Culture For Raymond Williams (1981, 1983) culture is located, for all intents and purposes, within flexible but identifiable boundaries. -

Sua´rez-Orozco* At the turn of the millennium we are witnessing intense new worldwide migration and refugee flows. There are now some 100 million transnational immigrants plus an estimated 30 million refugees displaced from their homelands. These flows are largely structured by the intensi- fication of globalization—a process of economic, social, and cultural transformation rapidly accelerating in the last decade.1 Globalization has increased immigration in a variety of ways. First, transnational capital flows (roughly a trillion dollars cross national boundaries every day) tend to stimulate migration because where capital flows, immigrants tend to follow.2 Second, the new information and communication technologies that are at the heart of globalization tend to stimulate migration because they encourage new standards of consumption and life-style choices. Would-be immigrants imagine better opportunities elsewhere and mobi- lize to achieve them. Third, the affordability of mass transportation—last year approximately 1.5 billion airline tickets were sold—has put the migration option within the reach of millions who heretofore could not consider it. Fourth, globalization has stimulated new migration because it has produced uneven results—big winners and losers. Globalization pains have been felt in many regions of the developing world—perpetuating unemployment and further depressing wages.3 On *Victor S. CHAPTER ONE: ART, TECHNOLOGY, AND HIGH ART/LOW CULTURE DEBATES IN CANONICAL AMERICAN ART HISTORY I. Overview In his Media Art History, Hans-Peter Schwarz of the Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe, Germany (ZKM) wrote: “The history of the new media [sic] is inextricably linked with the history of the project of the modern era as a whole. It can only be described as the evolution of the human experience of reality, i.e. of the social reality relationship in the modern age.” I begin with his words, which have strong resonance for me, perhaps beyond his initial intent or ultimate direction. His astute triangulation of those three concepts—new media history, the project of the modern era, and “social reality”—form the nexus of my theoretical investigation. For it seems that current social realities and the project of the modern era largely govern new media’s reception within the Western art history canon. Perhaps clarity regarding the ideological interconnection of these three elements will only be possible with more historical distance. However, this dissertation represents a step toward a better understanding of the sometimes-vicious canonical opposition to the fusion of art and technology, in light of these intersections. Key are his two phrases: “the project of the modern era,” and “the evolution of the human experience of reality, i.e. of the social reality relationship in the modern age.” On the basis of Schwarz’s text, I take the second phrase to mean the dehumanization that results from industrialization and modern warfare. In regard to artistic production, he rightly underscores the abrupt reorganization of vision precipitated by, for example, developments in photography and cinematography during the early modernist period. -

Embodied Culture as Procedure: Rethinking the Link Between Personal and Objective Culture1 Omar Lizardo University of Notre Dame Recent developments in cognitive science and the philosophy of mind point to a radically new way of understanding the way that culture comes to be embodied in human agents. According to these emerging perspectives, persons can only embody culture in the form of procedure: context sensitive skills for the fast categorization, perception and exploitation of the response-dependent properties of objects and settings. Procedures are fundamentally and irreducibly embodied, while a lot of what we refer to as culture exists in an externalized, objectified form. This means that the format in which culture is externally encountered is radically distinct from the one in which it is embodied. This (re)opens the problematic of the linkage or interfacing between external and objectified culture, a central problem in cultural theory that became obfuscated, and spuriously “resolved” by phenomenological and functionalist theorists who presumed that culture is internalized in the same way in which it appears in external form. I close by outlining the implications for thinking of embodied culture as procedure, as well as developing novel ways of understanding how persons “interface” with the external world of objectified cultural objects and artifacts. Introduction Looking through the contemporary theoretical landscape, we find very few ways of conceptualizing the enculturation process that do not rely on the metaphorical imagery of the (format-preserving) “transfer” of objectified cultural contents from the external environment into the internal environment of the person. That is, enculturation is conceptualized—either explicitly or more commonly, implicitly— primarily as a learning process. -

This cleavage has been overshadowed by the red state/blue state analysis in the United States and dismissed as an artifact of demographic and regional differences in Canada; however, this voting gap appears to have emerged with the increasing salience of "culture war" issues in North American politics. Sociological theory suggests that there may be an affinity between urban and rural place of residence and the progressivist and traditionalist poles ofthe culture war which may explain urban/rural differences in vote choice. In the present study, urban/rural voting differences are assessed using election surveys from the Canadian Federal and United States Presidential Elections of 2004 and using aggregate data from Canadian Federal and United States Presidential Elections since 1920. The results show that the urban/rural gap has grown to its widest point in recent elections in both countries, coinciding with the reorganization of the right wing of Canadian party politics and the domination ofthe Republican Party by social conservatives in the United States. -
